This very funny song is one I've heard at singarounds. I play piano for a music hall group and I reckon our audiences would love to see one of our performers in fishnets and a helmet performing it.....Please make their day and let me have the words. i know only part of the tune.....has it been recorded...

Cheers
D

Well, this page (click) says Hilary Spencer recorded it. She attributes it to R.Wallace+S.Kelley.
Not much to go on, but it's a start. If you write to Hilary Spencer and get lyrics, please post them here in this thread.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M A LADY POLICEMAN (R Wallace/S Kelley)
From: paulo
Date: 28 Feb 03 - 12:47 PM

CHORUS: I'm a lady policeman, ever so ladylike, ever so ladylike, ta-rah-rah.
When I draw my truncheon, nobody gets the spike, ever so ladylike, ta-rah-rah.
Every night at ten I go on my beat. All the naughty men say tweet, tweet, tweet.
I'm a lady policeman, ever so ladylike, ever so ladylike, ta-rah-rah.

Up to Monday morning last I never learned a job.
In honest work I'd been afraid to stay.
As I went to draw my dole, that amazing bloke
Accosted me in such a charming way.
He said, "you're built to be a lady cop,"
And there and then the barber cut my mop.

Chorus

I'm o'fay with every manly copper that I meet.
I tips the wink as long as it's OK.
I adore cat burglars 'cause they're light upon their feet.
I never give cat burglars away.
I love to stroke their lovely prickly fur.
I stroke and stroke and stroke until they purr.

Chorus

Mal Waite recorded this song on an album called "By Request" (1987) and it's credited to a Raymond Wallace. In the notes she states that she heard the song on an old 78 by Betty Bolton

Additional third verse written by Susan Kelly to complement the original two:

All the naughty men who come out from this pub each night
Are like putty in me hands I'll have know
I takes 'em by the arm & leans 'em up against the wall
And then I frisks 'em down from 'ead to toe
I asks 'em would they like to do some time
When they say yes I say your place or mine

You can hear a complete recording of Hilary Spencer singing I'M A LADY POLICEMAN at her web site ? or Click to play an mp3 file.

I think I'd rather hear Kenneth Williams.

Au fait: [French, pronounced "oh fay"]: being up to particular standard or level especially in being up to date in knowledge.

(I could have defined this as "abreast" but it would sound too much like a naughty pun.)

Mudcat member Lady Policeman (as in a former life lady policeman) sings a wonderful version of this, including Susan Kelly's third verse....
