Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: greg stephens Date: 04 Mar 03 - 03:08 PM I imagine there will be a Pace-Egging Song or two in the DT, that was(is) an Easter custom in the north-west of England. (I have a fine photo of my grandfather in costume, and not very well blacked-up). That, off-hand, is the only class of songs I can think of in the English folk tradition that are actually about Easter customs, as opposed songs appropriate to the season, of which plenty are mentioned above. So do try the DT, I amagine it would be titled either Pace Egg Song or Pace Egging Song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: GUEST,Geordie Date: 04 Mar 03 - 02:12 PM The Easter Tree as sung by June Tabor.A very moving song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: Ron Olesko Date: 04 Mar 03 - 02:07 PM Lament of the Three Marys. Joe Heaney recorded the definitive version (in my opinion.). Cathie Ryan has also recorded the song combining it with another fitting piece. The song is traditionally sung on Good Friday and I understand there are hundreds of verses that have been collected. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 03 - 12:18 PM Don't know if it's part of something longer, or just a simple two liner, but from the dim recesses of my memory: Daffodils yellow, daffodils gay To put on my bonnet for Easter day" Which of course then reminds me of "Easter Parade" Nigel |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: GUEST,Johannes Date: 04 Mar 03 - 11:53 AM Hello all and thanks for the hints. Mary, I am looking for songs "about Easter" - concerning easter time and festivities in folksong and tradition. Johannes |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 04 Mar 03 - 09:41 AM Do you want songs that mention "Easter," or do you want songs "about" Easter? Folksongs? or anything in the Anglo/Irish tradition? About Easter -- Handel's "I Know that my Redeemer Liveth" from "The Messiah" in the last section (after the Hallelujah Chorus). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 03 Mar 03 - 05:29 PM Anglo's given you a good source, Johannes. I particularly like #71 (in my very old edition): My dancing day. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs associated with Easter From: Anglo Date: 03 Mar 03 - 05:22 PM Go to the Oxford Book od Carols. Many are suitable for or specific to Easter (there's a section in the back which organizes them according to the church calendar); many are traditional. |
