I recommend LOVE IS COME AGAIN.
Recorded it on my 1st CD.

I imagine there will be a Pace-Egging Song or two in the DT, that was(is) an Easter custom in the north-west of England. (I have a fine photo of my grandfather in costume, and not very well blacked-up).
That, off-hand, is the only class of songs I can think of in the English folk tradition that are actually about Easter customs, as opposed songs appropriate to the season, of which plenty are mentioned above.
So do try the DT, I amagine it would be titled either Pace Egg Song or Pace Egging Song.

Lament of the Three Marys.   Joe Heaney recorded the definitive version (in my opinion.).   Cathie Ryan has also recorded the song combining it with another fitting piece.

The song is traditionally sung on Good Friday and I understand there are hundreds of verses that have been collected.

Don't know if it's part of something longer, or just a simple two liner, but from the dim recesses of my memory:

Daffodils yellow, daffodils gay
To put on my bonnet for Easter day"

Which of course then reminds me of "Easter Parade"

Nigel

Hello all and thanks for the hints. Mary, I am looking for songs "about Easter" - concerning easter time and festivities in folksong and tradition.

Johannes

Do you want songs that mention "Easter," or do you want songs "about" Easter? Folksongs? or anything in the Anglo/Irish tradition?

About Easter -- Handel's "I Know that my Redeemer Liveth" from "The Messiah" in the last section (after the Hallelujah Chorus).

The Day Before Easter is a variant of the False Bride songs. Very lovely and haunting melody.
Also Judas and Mary.
Keith.

Anglo's given you a good source, Johannes. I particularly like #71 (in my very old edition): My dancing day.

Go to the Oxford Book od Carols. Many are suitable for or specific to Easter (there's a section in the back which organizes them according to the church calendar); many are traditional.

I am sure, this has been discussed before, but I couldn'T really make anything out of the already existing threads. We are looking for anglo-irish song material about Easter and be grateful for advice.

Kind regards
Johannes Schiefner
