Subject: Kruger Bros. vs. Lawrence Juber
From: Mudlark
Date: 04 Mar 03 - 03:07 AM

My local folk music society has booked the Kruger Bros, a bluegrass group from Switzerland (!?!) this wkend. Has anybody heard these guys? The following week is Lawrence Juber and I can't afford both, especially as Tony Trischka is coming in April (I KNOW I want to go to that one!).

You are in for a treat! The Kruger Bros. are the most effective group I've seen at "progressive" bluegrass, and Jens Kruger is one of the best banjo players alive. I've seen them several times, at festivals in Lexington KY and at the IBMA conventions. Although I'm somewhat of a purist in bluegrass and often cringe at excessive tinkering with tradition, these guys pull it off. Elements of classical music seep in and lots of folk influence is felt, but they can also play the real thing. They generate an easy, comfortable rapport on stage, but keep the music up front. Please come back to us next week and tell us what you think.

Gern...thanks so much for your imput, which has put an end to my dithering. Will let you know. From your description I'm wondering if they are anything like Druha Trava, from Chech Rebuplic. Again, not traditional, but very good.

They were at Winfield a couple years ago and drew tremendous crowds. They are VERY talented - by all means see them. Traditional b-grass? Not really, but very very good.

Hi Mudlark:

Talked to Chip tonight and he says they do things with a banjo that Bela Fleck never dreamed of. He says don't miss it.

Saw them a couple years here in Arizona and attended one of their clinics. What blows your mind is while talking to people Jens is playing the strings and his brother sitting next to him is handling the fretboard. All this at a ripping speed while gabbing to folks. AWESOME.

Their show contained a TV/Movie theme segment that starts out with Duelling Banjos but it is a real comedic gem. Songs blending into songs. Their CDs are very progressive, lots of Irish banjo influence.

The speed that Jens generates has to be seen to be believed. WOW.

Just wanted to thank those who urged me to see this group...went last night and it was terrific. Tired and worn out after too much yard work in too short a time. I wasn't really feeling all that great. But 10 minutes of the Kruger Bros. changed all that--what a shot in the arm! The banjo player is phenomenal, the group tight yet informal and accessible, and they ended the last set with a 20 min. version of Duelling Banjos that was hilarious. A great concert, better than vitamins!

We heard the Kruger Brothers last night (for the 3rd wonderful time) at Hugh's Room in Toronto. Fabulous is to lame a word for what they do. They are so charming and so incredibly talented and passionate about their work - and so ORIGINAL!

If you EVER have a chance to hear them live - don't miss the opportunity!!

I was sitting right beside the table that the band was before they went on. They really were something. I loved their versatility. Some traditional Bluegrass, some classical, some folk. They seemed to really be enjoying themselves too.

Same level...opposite side of the room. Yes...they are so "together"...they listen to each other...it's like one organism.

Thanks for the link Peter.

July 30, 2022 - Kruger Brothers (Jens, Uwe, Joel Landsberg) playing at Rocky Grass (Lyons, CO). I'll take this dynamic group over 'trad blue grass' any day of the week. As my wife noted .... they played sitting down (go figure).
