Hello everyone, I´m looking for lyrics of / information about a song I heard on tape once, sung by a very high woman´s voice. The last phrase of every stanza is "I love my love because I know my love loves me" and the song was about a girl in a madhouse. Anyone have a clue what I´m talking about...? I you do, please let me know! Cheers, Helen

Hi Helen
I think the song your looking for is I love my love.
The song is from an old Garland in the British museum. I have it in a Cornish song book and will copy it up for you.
The mad house you refer to is "Bedlam" Which I believe was an old hospital for the insane.
Regards Baz.

There were some threads (Feb 98) on Tom of Bedlam, a couple links there will lead you to more info on Bedlam & Maudlin (Mad Maudlin-women's hospital), another link from Bert brings you to Bedlams web site (their 750 yr birthday celabration). Barry

Is it perhaps Pentangle/Renbourn Group's recording of A Maid in Bedlam on the record of the same name? I'll dig it out this week and give it a listen. I think I have it on CD. Vocalist is (soprano) Jacqui McShee. Lovely record.

Nora

As "The Maid in Bedlam" the song is given in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #46, (1787), where it is set to the tune "Will you go to Flanders/ Gramachree Molly". It was printed a few years earlier in songbooks without music.

"The Maid in Bedlam" is without music in 'The Vocal Miscellany', 1778. I didn't note whether a tune was cited. Most songs in this collection are without tune citation. The tune citation is "Gramachree" (Gramachre Molly/ Molly Ashtore/ Will you go to Flanders) in 'The Scots Nightingale', 2nd. edit., 1779. George Ogle's song "Gramachree Molly" (As down on Banna's banks I strayed) seems to have been first printed (with music) in 'The London Magazine', Sept., 1771, and is also given as the second song to the tune in SMM #46.

The song seems to be a major reworking of a song of about 1735-40, "The Black's Lamentation", in which the black, George Sighous, is distracted to madness by his hopeless love for an English girl, and is confined in Bedlam. This latter song is to an unrelated tune.

Helen
This may be of use and if you want an ABC of the tune I have let me know,
Regards Baz.
I love my love

1. Abroad as I was walking one evening in the spring
I heard a maid in bedlam so sweetly for to sing,
Her chains she rattled with her hands and thus replied she
"I love my love because I know my love loves me! "

2 Oh! my cruel parents have been too unkind!
They've drove and banished me, and tortured my mind!
Although I'm ruined for his sake, contented will I be;
I love my love, because I know my love loves me

3 Could I become a swallow, I'd ascend up in the air;
Then, if I lost my labour, and shouldn't find him there,
I quickly would become a fish, and search the flowing sea
I love my love, because I know my love loves me

4 With straw I'll make a garland, and dress it very fine,
I'll mix the same with roses, lily, pink and thyme,
I will preserve it for my love when he returns from sea;
I love my love! became I know my love lovers me

5 Just as she was sat weeping, her love came on the land,
Hearing she was in Bedlam, he ran straight out of hand,
And, as he entered in the gates he heard her sigh and say
"I love my love because I know my love loves me! "

6 He stood and gazed on her, hearing his love complain,
He could not stand any longer, he bled in every vein,
He flew into her snowy-white arms, and replied he
"I love my love, because I know my love loves me"
