The Pennsylvania Power Company has just informed me (with less than 12 hours notice) that the power to my whole building will be out tonight from 11:30pm EST Thursday to 4:30am Friday. That means that the Mudcat will be offline till they get the power back on.

Yeah, that would be my first question - How are you gonna keep WARM?
Heck, it's even cold here in Northern California.
Spring flowers are starting to come out, but it's still cold. Come visit - we've got a great wood stove.

well, when *I* was a lad, we'd hook up a coil generator and hand crank all night to keep our web site up! With volunteers, we could sometimes get 73k out of a 56k modem! Yessir, you young folks have it easy...mumble, mumble...

Well, fortunately (not really) Emily and Lily are spending the night elseware... the hospital. Lily has what's called RSV and bronchiolistis or something like that. Its a bad cold and cough that restricts her breathing to the point that not enough oxygen is getting to her brain. They have her in an oxygen tent now and will keep her there for at least the night, maybe longer. Things are OK though, they said this is rather common now for old folks and babies. She is in good hands, and is in no danger.

I make that 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm on 7th for us in the British Isles. I think.

Since Maggie Thatcher flogged off the electricity to private companies - it used to be publicly owned - we seem to have had a lot more power cuts than we ever did before.

Hey Max....RSV---Been there, done that, with Tristan.....She'll be fine I'm sure but watch for ear infections from this point on.....It tends to be a precursor to them in kids prone to ear infections. Probably just an old wives tale but it was true in our case and I've known some awful smart old wives.

Just a note to agree with the principle underlying McGrath's comment about privatization. Here in Seattle with our socialized power we have generally lower rates and more consistent service than in surrounding urbanized areas with private companies.

Spaw, lucky Lily has the odds in her favor to avoid ear infections because she's nursing. Another one of those benefits of doing it the old fashioned way. (I'm assuming she's still nursing, anyway!)

Our power with TXU just went up 12% as of this week. Back in the early part of 2002 when local competition was allowed to set up, TXU lowered its rates by 10% to be comptetitive. Now they've raised it back up (effective next month's bill) because of "natural gas prices." Time to shop around with the competition. Some of them folded up their tents already in this competitive market, but others are still out there.
