Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke how I would have loved to have seen even one of them. Two of the ones that I still want to see are Al Green and Bill Withers. Luckily I've seen most of the 'greats' but on quite a few occasions I must admit to being a tad disapointed. I saw Solomon Burke last month and he was excellent.

Just checked in to this thread again and pedantic Murray is not aware that the Beatles played at Strathpeffer one night and Dingwall the next. I have envious regret that I know witnesses to both concerts - Mind you half of Easter Ross claims to have been to either one of them!

Chris - One show that I remember was the New Grass Revival. There couldn't have been more than 12 or 15 people there. After one number I leaned over and whispered in my friends ear "Damn - that song was hot" - and Sam Bush replied from the stage " Why - thankyou very much ".

We had a friend in San Diego who went to high school with John Denver and attended many parties where he sang. Sure do miss that great voice and great person.
How about acts that you saw, but wished more folks had been there?   Saw Nanci Griffith at the Old Time Cafe in SD and there were about 6 in the audience!
I booked the Berryman's for one of their first concerts in CA - lost money on that one, but they have many fans now for sure!
Saw Greg Brown at a Ground Round in Chicago, before the PHC days - very few listened, but he was great then too.
I got Mississippi John's autograph in DC in '64. I was so nervous I forgot to ask who the lady was next to him - later he introduced Elizabeth Cotton! But at least when I sing "did you shake his hand?" I always add "I did!"

There are those I haven't seen, noted earlier. But I'm happy that I HAVE seen The Chad Mitchell Trio with John Denver, Judy Collins, the Clancys in the early '80s, Tommy Makem, the Makem Brothers, PP&M, The Highwaymen,
Natalie Macmaster, and The Celtic Fiddlers (to name a few). There is some value in being older and blessed (or cursed) with a very good memory -- I can relive concerts.

At that same Sidmouth Festival in 2001 that Callie mentioned, I could have seen Lonnie Donegan, but I didn't. Too late now!

Every time Elton John or Billy Joel come to Oz, I say I'm going to see them, but I get put off by the expense. Maybe I should just do it and to hell with the expense - life's too short............

judy Collins sang just recently at a christmas time show in a town
near here. I think she has done a recent special at wolf trap for public tv or radio...so there may be many other chances to hear her.
Others I am glad i have gotten to hear are U. Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrells, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, and they all are performing still. Those who i have seen who have since passed away are: Jerry Garcia,
Malvina Reynolds, Charles Sawtelle, Kate Wolf, and i am sure there
are others. One singer i heard about after her passing is Eva Cassidy,
and she was so young and her career so promising and her voice so sweet.

Many of the above mentioned. In the early sixties jerry Lee Lewis and gene Vincent came to playat the Gaiety Ballroom, Grimsby. I wasn't allowed to go and I'm ashamed to say that I genuinely HATED my parents for this. What made it worse was the local paper showing a photo of Jerry Lee with all my friends clearly visible in front of the stage. I've been fortunate to see The Beatles, Stones, Terry and Mcghee, Otis Redding, The Tamla Motown Revue, Champion Jack Dupree and lots of others but at those times I HATED my Mum and Dad.......

When I was in high school in Stratford, Ontario Charles Aznavour played a concert at the Stratford Festival. There were so many unsold tickets, they tried to give them away and my French teacher was offering them. She tried to explain what a great opportunity this was, but I didn't know who Charles Aznavour was and I didn't think I'd like it. Charles Aznavour is still alive, but I doubt I'll have another chance to hear him. I think he's stopped performing.

In 1987 or 1988 I was living at Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe in Ottawa. I was driving downtown to see the Clancy Brothers, when the Military Police stopped me for having a burnt out headlight.

However, I have seen a lot of great ones: Stan Rogers, Odetta, Liam Clancy, Tommy Makem, Battlefield Band, Tannahill Weavers, Ralph Stanley, Wilson Pickett, Bryn Terfel, the Leahy family (before they became a Celtopop band), Old Blind Dogs, Sean Keane.

Chet Atkins...MJH...Cat Stevens in his heyday...Al Hirt (who I passed up about 6 months before he died.)...Jim Croce and a ton of others.

One I have always wanted to see is a shared billing of Dylan and khandu.

Roger Miller appeared locally about a year before he died. I didn't go, thinking I'd catch him the next time around. There isn't always a next time.

    I'd also have liked to see John Denver sing with the Mitchell Trio, and to have seen the Chad Mitchell Trio in their heyday (my parents wouldn't let me go to concerts then because they said I was too young. I think it was more that they didn't care for the Trio's politics). Bob Gibson is a performer I wish I'd been more aware of back when I could possibly have caught his show.

I have seen Stan Rogers perform when he was an unknown at a John Allen Cameron concert. I have also watched John Allen pick guitar at local dances in his early days. I have danced to the live fiddle playing of both Winston Fitzgerald and Buddy Mac Master. I have seen the Rankin Family when they were about ten kids at their first public gig. I have seen the Barra MacNeils perform as kids. I have seen Rita Mac Neil perform long before she gained fame. I have seen the original Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem perform in their early days. I was at the last public performance of Ryan's Fancy. I watched Natalie Mac Master and Ashley Mac Isaac in their early years. I still watch the young unknown talent of Cape Breton perform and try to guess who will be next to grace the world's stage. I have also watched local talent perform, better than any of the crap played on radio or T.V.
I would have loved to see Woody and Pete or Hank and Lefty but I have done pretty well!

Jeff Buckley. He played in Sydney so many times that I thought I'd catch him one day , "Grace" being one of my all time favourite albums.

I went to see Judy Collins in the late 60s, but she cancelled because her father was ill. Never had another chance.

Didn't see Steeleye Span, either.

However, last year I was regretting missing Brass Monkey, and I saw them at Lichfield two weeks ago. Absolutely magnificent.

So stop bothering about who you never saw way back when, get out and see who's around now!

I read an article in The Star one very wet fall day in 1985
which described the life of 93 year old Elizabeth Cotton
and announced her performance that night at the Hotel Isabella.
I remember being struck by the writers point that she represented
one of the last opportunities to see a performer who had been
born in the 1800's. So I skipped the Jays/Royals game and spent
the 10 bucks - one of the best decisions I've made.
See the old ones while you still can.

I know that MJH died in the sixties, but I was born in '59. I would have loved to have seen him, Son House, Jimi Hendrix and a number of others, but I really wasn't of concert going age when they died.

A few more, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Roy Buchanan. I almost went to SRV's last appearance here as I really liked him, although I wasn't of the Stevie is God school. He was touring with Jeff Beck who is my favourite electric player. They were playing at the Skydome, I'd been to one show there and said I'd never go to another as the sound was awful.

Buchanan played a number of times in Toronto but I just never got around to seeing him.

Oh yeah, how about this one? I was still in High School, a buddy of mine asked if I wanted to go see April Wine at the El Mocombo. I'd seen them a few times and wasn't that interested in seeing them again. The next day the front page of the paper showed a picture of The Rolling Stones playing at the ElMo. They were recording Love You Live, they kept it such a secret that until Mick and Keefe walked on stage the audience thought they were going to see April Wine. I still haven't quite got over that one.

Glad I got to see a small house concert with Tony Cuffe before he passed. We talked that night about my taking harp lessons from him. I later found out he'd just been diagosed with cencer that week.

This may sound strange but I honestly wish I had gone to see the Grateful Dead at least once...just to experience it and find out what all the fuss was about.

Was fortunate enough to go to the same folk clubs as "The Humblebums" and enjoyed every minute of them...much laughter and good music, another member was Tam Harvey.
Truly wish I could have seen Woodie Guthrie, Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, The Blue Sky Boys and Memphis Minnie perform.
I did want to go to see the Beatles in London, but my Mum wouldn't let me LOL I think she made have had a point, I was 9 years old!!

Sticking with Steve's original stipulation that I had the opportunity to see them, didn't go to the show, and won't get a second chance this side of the afterlife, the only two I can think of are The Grateful Dead and The Seldom Scene.

I've passed up several chances to see Dylan, but just don't like the man enough to spend the money. It's possible that one day I'll regret it, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

On the flip side of the coin, the one person that I never got an opportunity to see but would not have missed if the opportunity had arisen was John Fahey.

Overall, I've been very fortunate to have been able to see most of the people whose music has been important to me at the various stages of my life and musical interests: The great rock guitarists of the 60's (Hendrix, Clapton, Zappa, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Page) - The great flatpicking wizards in the 70's and 80's (Doc, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Dan Crary) - Most of the great bluegrass bands (Monroe, Lester Flatt, Jim & Jesse, Osborne Bros., Ralph Stanley, Country Gentlmen) - The major progressive acoustic bands (Grisman, Newgrass Revival, Flecktones, String Cheese Incident) - Great one-man folk acts (John McCutcheon, John Hartford, Mike Seeger, Tom Paxton).

Regretfully, the big name Celtic bands don't generally have our humble hometown on their iteneraries, so I guess if I'm ever going to see Altan or The Chieftans I'm going to have to make a road trip to a big Celtic festival somewhere.

I never knew about Son House, but Rick Fielding carried his case once. That is why I am in awe of Rick (joke). I had no idea about blues then, but to think he was around when I was around, and there was a chance of it, gives me the shivers. I am so glad there is at least one video of him.

I wish I had seen Peggy Lee. I had a number of chances and muffed them all.

I did see Ella Fitzgerald, bless her heart.

I have never seen Vanessa Redgrave on stage, and would love to, and will, given half a chance.

Curiously enough, I never saw Pierre Trudeau in person, even though I worked on two of his campaigns, and certainly lived through years of him.

I'm still hoping to see Pete Seeger and Doc Watson. I regret missing Kate Wolf, who performed frequesntly here in Norhtern California - I didn't hear of her until after she died.
Same with Steve Goodman. My brothers saw him perform frequently, and one brother knew him personally - but I didn't hear of him until after he died.
But hey, I've sung with Sandy and Caroline Paton, with Kendall Morse, Rick Fielding, and many other lovely people I've met here - what more could I ask for?
Well, at least one more - I wanna sing with Art Thieme.

Stanley Turrentine, the great soulful jazz saxophone player. He used to play a couple of times a year at the Village Vanguard in New York City, and I really wanted to hear him. But, it seemed like every time I saw the he was there, I had a conflict and couldn't go. So, I vowed that the next time he was there, I'd move evrything out of the way to hear him. Unfortunately, there wasn't a "next time" because he dided shortly after that.

There were tons of folk musicians who did concerts in New York City in the early sixties, but I was on a peanut butter menu, and didn't have the money to see them. That's the most painful experience... to be surrounded by people you really want to hear, but not having enough money to eat, let alone pay for tickets..

The Beatles, Doc Watson, The Rolling Stones come to mind. For a while I thought I'd never see Tom Paxton or Geoff Muldaur but I managed to see them in the last two years. Both put on great shows by the way. Several artists like Bill Monroe and Eric Anderson havn't been through my neck of the woods so I've never had the chance.

It's not folk music but the Beatles were playing in Dingwall town hall which was our nearest county town of about 15 thousand population.
It was in the early sixties and they were known as the Silver Beatles then and I had never heard of them and didn't bother going. Those who did go were not overly impressed as the sound wasn't too good.
I often wonder what became of that band!

Rick Fielding mentioned in another thread that he has seen some legends, but mentioned a few he wished he had seen. It made me think of some artist I wish I had seen. I'm not talking about people like Robert Johnson or Mississippi John Hurt who died before I would have had a chance to see them. I'm talking about artists who played in your area, you didn't go and they died before you got another chance.

In my case it's Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe. Muddy played in Toronto not long before he died. I was a teenager and didn't really realize how great Muddy was. Monroe played some festivals around here but I never got to one. Missed oppotunities.
