"Open Mike" might not be the best way of describing "Floor Singers" at many UK folk clubs, because there is often no PA. If you've heard singers like Johnny Collins and Graeme Knights you'd realise why it's possible to manage without.

Thanks, Dave Bryant. I wish more concerts on this side of the pond were run on a similar format. I been to a lot of concerts where people sat in rows of folding chairs and clapped appreciatively between songs, got up at the end and bought the CD and said what a great time they had and wondered how much it had to do with folk music. It's really nice to see the audience singing and performing as well.

In most UK folk clubs the booked guest (Headliner) usually does two spots of about 1/2 hour each. The evening would usually be started by a resident performer or group perhaps followed by a floor-singer (open mike performer) or two. The Guest would then do their first spot - usually at about 9pm, followed by a short interval. After the interval there would be more spots by residents and floor-singers until about 10.30 when the booked guest would do their final spot, it's customary to thank the guest and then get them to do one more number as an encore.

Many clubs run a raffle to help with funds and in this case the tickets would be sold during the interval and the draw would take place just before the booked guest's final spot.

SINSULL, You missed a really good show. I sentence you to kill your t.v.:-). Thanks to Marie and Winterbright for putting together a good show. Thanks Naemanson for your concise directions. It's been a while since I've been to the Side Door Coffee House and I seem to go a different way each time.

Jez mentioned that he really appreciated the format of the Coffee House where people got up in the first half to sing a song and the second half the headliner played. He said that was a similar format to what he had back home. Hey, we had everything from original compositions to Gordon Bok and THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING on the hammered dulcimer.

Thanks for coordinating this wonderful concert. Jez was in fine form, despite the distraction of a dozen or so wide-ranging songs in the open-mike pre-concert phase. What a schedule he's working on from last January to September. In addition to about a hundred gigs in the UK, there's Europe, the USA (from Maine to Florida to Alaska!), but missing this time around are Australia and Asia. Hope he has some time out.

Directions:
1. Coming from the south follow I-95 North to Exit 22, Bath/Brunswick.
2. Follow Rt.1/Pleasant St. through 3 traffic lights.
3. At the 3rd light, be in the right lane and go straight on to the one way street
4. You will still be on Pleasant St. Go up and over the hill.
5. The UU church is on the right just past the post office (on the left) and the library (on the right).
6. If you get to the traffic light on Maine St., you've passed it. Turn right, take the next right, and the next, and that should put you right by the church.
7. FMI call 207-373-1526; or 207-729-4008 on the night of the performance.

The entrance is the red door on the right side of the church (facing the front from Pleasant Street.

Coffee and snacks will be available. This is, after all, a coffeehouse.

Jez Lowe will be appearing at the Side Door Coffee House in Brunswick (25 m. north of Portland) on Friday, March 21. No reserved seating; doors open at 7pm; first set open mike; Jez in the second set. Seating is limited, so don't be late. $7 admission. The Side Door is a monthly coffee house at the Unitarinan Universalist Church, 15 Pleasant St. every third Friday except July.
