WHat style do you want to play? and apart from pitch does the long neck involve different thinking?

This bloke seems to be based in Manchester - Tom Joad. Don't know him, but you could try an e-mail. He might be able to point you in the right direction.
As said by nickp - the starting point is to know what style of music you are interested in. It makes a BIG difference in what sort of teacher you require.
Put a Forum Search into Mudcat for BANJO and see what old threads you pull out. Various aspects have been discussed in detail on different occasions. Clawhammer and Old-Time, Bluegrass, etc.
Best of luck.
Geoff the Duck.

I strongly recommend Pete Seeger's book "How To Play The Five String Banjo" whether you find a teacher or not. You can check it out at the British Amazon site here: amazon.co.uk

I bought a long-neck 5-string years ago in America, and it had exactly the same tuning and playing style as the standard-neck except that the longer strings gave it a lower pitch, so it was tuned 3 semitones down in an A tonality rather than a C tonality (though you can always capo up). I'm not saying this is the only tuning for a long-neck but it was what I had. Incidentally, I loaned both banjo and Seeger book to a friend who promptly learned to play it better than I could, the swine. My favourite was Cripple Creek, which sounded brilliant in the lower key.

Did you buy a long neck for a particular reason?
However, if you want to learn Bluegrass picking you will probably need a standard neck. If then you need some lessons email me at
picke_r@hotmail.com

i'm in Bury.

Of course you can learn bluegrass or any other picking on a long neck. A capo at the third fret turns it into a virtual standard banjo. I'm in Doncaster, or I could teach you clawhammer.
There's an old time/bluegrass session at the Rising Sun, Mossley, where you might encounter someone who could teach banjo. Ring Dave Pope on 01457 837166 for details.

You may want to try Tony 'Sully' Sullivan in Macclesfield. He's known for his Irish Tenor Banjo but don't be fooled! He's a fantastic five-stringer too, having produced tutors on the five string, and he does give lessons.

Go to

www.banjohangout.org

You will need to register, but once you have there is a list of players, many of whom are teachers. You can do a search by country, there are 246 players registered in England, hopefully you will find someone.

If it is Bluegrass that you are hoping to learn this is a very good method. www.murphymethod.com

Good luck and good pickin'.
