Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:03 PM Often known as The Mountain Streams Where the Moorcocks Crow; number 2124 in the Roud Folk Song Index. Found mainly in Scotland and the North of Ireland; could belong originally to either. Discussed here from time to time; the search engine will find you more references. No known author. A note in Sam Henry's Songs of the People (ed. Huntington,1990) states: "The song was composed about 70 years ago [i.e. mid-1850s] by a roving sportsman in honour of a young lady of Letterloan". This is unattributed hearsay, so not very helpful in the absense of supporting testimony; but the closest to a specific that we have; Peter Kennedy, however (Folk Songs of Britain and Ireland, 1975, p.331) says " It is thought that the song originates in Scotland, probably in Ayrshire".. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: InOBU Date: 11 Mar 03 - 07:27 AM It is also on the latest Sorcha Dorcha CD, "The Times That Try Our Souls..." About 9/10th of the songs on the CD were written by Lorcan Otway, but I am pretty sure he did not write this one. He is a pal of Cathal McConnel, who sang the song before he did. His version is more along the lines of Andy Stewarts, however, and is very very good. You really should get the CD, it is just fantanstic. Cheers Lorcan |

Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: greg stephens Date: 11 Mar 03 - 07:44 AM Sorcha Dorcha CDs are strongly recommned. The extraordinary lineup is unique Lorcan Otway, descendant of the legendary O'Neills of Ulster, Lahjri Otway the Transylvanian Rom, Law Khan, great-great-great-great grandson of Genghis Khan,Larry o't'Way, itinerant piper from Boggart Hole Clough in Lancashire, Swimming With Beaver, descendant of a princess of the Oreille Perce tribe, and Assegai Ns'thwal, fourth cousin ( twice removed) of Shaka Zulu. And that is just a handful of the 289 musicians who have worked with the band in the last three weeks, a number only exceeded in musical history by the musicians who have worked with the Boat Band. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: InOBU Date: 11 Mar 03 - 07:50 AM And... look forward to the joint Boat Band Sorcha Dorcha barge tour one day, hopefully soon, as in these days of US UK joint rediculous ventures and adventures... we need some quiet insanity along the Avon Canal and well up into Yorkshire where the last Geordie roots of the Otways really do still live and coble shoes...... Now for the Feds and Scotland Yard, the joint in Boat Band and Sorcha Dorcha tour refers to cooperation, not illeagal indulgences, the only illegal indulgences in the proposed concert is free thought in a traditional modality... dogs and guns welcome but not provided... Speed the day Lorcan |

Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Mar 03 - 07:59 AM I too recommend Sorcha Dorcha CD's as a way to arouse your mind as well as your soul. The fact that Otway is the original Plug-O-Matic and capable of hijacking any thread is of course to be expected....but SD is hard to beat. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Origins: Dog 'n Gun who wrote it? From: Noreen Date: 11 Mar 03 - 01:32 PM Great, lads! I'd go a long way to participate in/observe a Boat Band/Sorcha Dorcha joint production (-: And thanks, Karen, for bringing up this song- think I'll sing it tonight, first time for a long while. The first time I heard it was sung by Dolores Keane, many years before she was famous. |
