Subject: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 11 Mar 03 - 02:38 PM This is one of my favourite songs in the Dransfield repertoire. Does any one have the lyrics and chords for this. Any help will be gratefully received. Pete. |

Subject: Lyr Add: GIRL OF DANCES (Barry Dransfield) From: RolyH Date: 11 Mar 03 - 06:22 PM GIRL OF DANCES (Dransfields) Playing games to hide our faces Where you my girl dances I know where I'll find you I know where to find you Rising late it's hard to start and With a smile you learn too soon Making new day resolutions Forgotten in the afternoon Refrain I hear them say that you're a wanderer Hear them say your heart's astray But this is your all my girl of dancing Don't let them take it away Oh the day goes out in red/gold gazes Where you my girl dances I know where I'll find you I know where to find you In the cafe all night siting With laughter rising to the moon Making plans for summer madness Forgotten in the afternoon Refrain On my bed the moon and stars Where my girl dances I know where I'll find you I know where to find you Dreaming again of country revels Of stone cold floors and flowers in June Brass and buckles in the morning Among the hunt in the afternoon Refrain Uneven players miss their chances Where you my girl dances I know where I'll find you I know where to find you By the window you are sitting I wonder where your smile has flown Was it someone in the morning Forgot you in the afternoon Refrain This was first recorded on the very rare (and expensive) Polydor Folk Mill album 'Barry Dransfield' (Polydor 2383 160) in 1972 This track was re issued on the 'Up to Now' double cd (Free Reed FRCD 18) which is still available (and a lot cheaper) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 11 Mar 03 - 08:34 PM It's actually only Barry that wrote this, not the two of them. One small correction: in the third verse it's "Brass and buckles WORN in the morning, HUNG ON THE HOOK in the afternoon"; and the refrain line is in every case "girl OF dances". But the hunt image works well too. Skippy, be sure to check out "Up To Now" if you've never heard this song. Lots of great B&R stuff on it, though I regret the omission of "Who Liveth So Merry". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: GUEST,alinact Date: 11 Mar 03 - 11:56 PM As I've said in a previous thread, I USED to have this record and if there is one record that I would give ANYTHING to have back, it's this one. Now, Bonnie S., I could have sworn that BD credits the song, on the sleeve of the record, to a group (someone like the Moody Blues or Pink Floyd or .....) and I have spent my entire Internet life trying to track it down, on that basis. Steve, skippy, Roly AND Bonnie S, you would make me an extremely happy person if you could fill in the details of this song. Allan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 12 Mar 03 - 02:37 AM Thank you all for the lyrics so far. I first heard this off of the Barry Dransfield album my dad has. My liking for it was re - established after buying the compilation album. Are there any ideas for chords I have tried but to no avail. cheers everyone!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 12 Mar 03 - 07:38 AM Alinact, on the sleeve of Up To Now, it's credited solely to Barry. I can ask him about this, if you're really not sure, but there's no reason to doubt the CD re-release sleeve: you can bet there'd be legal trouble from a bigtime music-biz lawyer if he was claiming credit for the work of an established pop group. There was doubt about his authorship of this song in another thread awhile back, and I mentioned to Barry that I'd posted a message correcting this and confirming that he wrote it. He didn't contradict me or demur, so I'm assuming from his own reaction and the credit on the Up To Now sleeve that he did indeed write it. Also (to my ear anyway) it really does sound like him. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: allanwill Date: 12 Mar 03 - 08:16 AM Thanks Bonnie S. I'll certainly take Barry's word for it, although perhaps you could ask him if there was a song on the album credited to one of those late 60's/early 70's big-name bands. Allan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 12 Mar 03 - 08:43 AM I've never seen the legendary original vinyl, but if it helps jog any memory cells, the tracks on it were: The Werewolf (written by Michael Hurley) Be My Friend Intrumental track (jigs) She's Like The Swallow (trad) Broken Barricades Girl Of Dances Lots Of Little Soldiers Lily's Ballade Instrumental track (reels) Robin Hood & The Peddler General Worthington |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: RolyH Date: 12 Mar 03 - 05:02 PM Thanks Bonnie your lyric corrections are spot on now that I have listened again. I have seen copies of THAT album change hands for £200+. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Les from Hull Date: 12 Mar 03 - 06:55 PM I believe that 'Broken Barricades' is a Keith Relf(?) song, if I can remember the sleeve notes correctly. Don't make me get the very expensive LP out of the safety deposit box! (Actually, the record has been played so often it must be worth all of 40p) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 03 - 03:01 AM Does any body have chords? it is a beautiful song. |
Subject: Chords Add: GIRL OF DANCES (Barry Dransfield) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 13 Mar 03 - 07:17 AM Here is my own hearing of the chords. Barry has just cancelled a gig that I know he was looking forward to and preparing for, in a club he highly respects; so it doesn't seem a good time to bother him. Anyway, try this (he plays it in F on the recording but I've transposed it to G for guitar-friendiness): GIRL OF DANCES – Barry Dransfield Key: G * denotes the first inversion (the middle note of the chord goes on the bottom) G D* C* G D* Playing games to hide our faces G C* G D* (or can play chord in root position) Where are you my girl of dances Eb Gm D (bass passing note F on "find") I know where I'll find you Eb Gm D I know where to find you G C* G D* Rising late it's hard to start out G C* G - D With a smile you learn too soon Eb Gm D Making new day resolutions F G – C* – G – D* (repeat progression) Forgotten in the afternoon Am C G I hear them say that you're a wanderer Am C G – D* Hear them say your heart's astray G C* G D* For this is your all my girl of dances C* D G Don't let them take it away |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: allanwill Date: 13 Mar 03 - 10:06 AM Bonnie Shaljean - you're a treasure. And Les, didn't Procul Harem do a song called Broken Barricades and is it the same one BD does? Allan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Les from Hull Date: 13 Mar 03 - 01:56 PM Yes - Procul Harem, that's who I was thinking of. I think it's Keith Relf(?) who was (is) their lyricist. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: RolyH Date: 14 Mar 03 - 06:48 AM The late Kieth Relf was the singer in the Yardbirds and then later in Rennaisance. I think the lyricist in Procul Harum was Keith Reid. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: GIRL OF DANCES - Robin/Barry Dransfield From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Mar 03 - 10:05 AM Thanks RolyH - I'm too old to go through my yards of semi-redundant vinyl, and my, what do you call it - that thing in your head that helps you recall things, oh yes, memory - well that isn't what it was either. At least I don't think it is, but then, how would I know? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Girl of Dances (Robin & Barry Dransfield) From: GUEST Date: 25 Jul 22 - 04:51 PM Wonderful song. I've just listened (carefully) while following your written lyrics (thank you RolyH!) and there are a couple of typos/mis-hearings ... I think. I know a couple have been mentioned before, but Each verse second line is "Where are you, my girl of dances?" not "Where you ..." The refrain includes "girl of dances", not "girl of dancing". I hear "Of stone-cool floors" - though that's questionable. Then, "Brass and buckles worn in the morning, on the hook in the afternoon." The last refrain, he sings "Hear them say that you're astray" rather than "your heart's astray". |
