Subject: Bernard Carney - Recognition at last! From: Bugsy Date: 12 Mar 03 - 05:05 AM Just a quick note from Australia to say Congratulations fo Bernard for being awarded Port Fairy Festival's "Artist of the Year". It's been a long time coming Bernard. (full media release below Cheers Bugsy Media Release - Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist of the Year - Bernard Carney The Port Fairy Folk Festival this year honours folk troubadour Bernard Carney with the title "Artist of the Year". Announcing the award, Festival Director Jamie McKew, said: "Bernard Carney is a great all round musician in the tradition of the folk troubadour. He has a unique talent as songwriter, guitarist and singer, all peppered with passion and humour." The Perth-based artist is a full-time musician and travels extensively. Bernard arrived in Perth from England in 1974 armed with a geology degree. Regular gigs around the then thriving Perth folk club scene quickly took over from geological ambitions. He soon began working full-time as a guitarist, singer and all-round entertainer while gradually finding his voice as a writer. Original influences - Ralph McTell, Tom Lehrer, Jake Thackray, The Beatles - still hold sway, while Bernard himself has become a major influence on guitarists and songwriters throughout Australia. The songwriting is always sharp and the undercurrent of incisive and clever social satire is always there. His latest CD, Feathers and Tributes, is full of gems that deepen with repeat listening and show the combination of craftsmanship and emotional impact that mark out lasting songwriters. Bernard won the West Australian Music Industry songwriting award in 1995 with Gardens of Death, his angry attack on the scourge of landmines which threaten civilian populations around the world. This song has been used by the International Red Cross in Geneva. The song is on the CD "No Time Like the Future" and is hailed as the international anthem for the cause. Steve Barnes, musician and Western Australian festival organiser has watched Bernard's career develop over 25 years. "What is really special is that he's done it on his own terms and purely on the strength of talent and integrity,'' Steve said. In 1993 Bernard won the National Festival songwriting award with his disturbing song "Devils Island" written in memory of Aboriginal prisoners sent to Rottnest, an island off the coast of Western Australia. In 2001 he was the joint winner of the Award for the Best Song of Tolerance at the Port Fairy Folk Festival with the song Walking Together. Subject: RE: Bernard Carney - Recognition at last! From: Chris/Darwin Date: 17 Mar 03 - 05:38 AM I think everyone has a story about when they first saw Bernard - in my case, when he toured through Tamworth with Eric Bogle - about 1990 I think. With a support act, everyone usually politely tolerates them until the main act comes on. In Bernard's case, no-one wanted him to finish! Like everyone else, I rushed out during the break, and bought some of his records. I have been a keen fan ever since. The nonchalant ease with which he plays ragtime, the wonderful blend of thought-provoking, funny, sad and loving songs, all leave you feeling sated in all your emotions. Congratulations Bernard! You deserve it! Regards Chris |
