Subject: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: wilco Date: 12 Mar 03 - 03:19 PM I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I couldn't find it in the archives. A friend gave me a cassette copy of an LP that was from the "Smithsonian Collection of Classic American Music." Side A: The Fatal wedding - Bradley Kincaid, Wildwood Flowere - Carter Family, Daddy and Home - Jimmy Rogers, and 14 more. Side B: Remember Me - Lula belle and Scotty, Maple on the Hill - JE Mainer, Lost letter - rey griffen, plus 12 others. Is this still available? Thanks!!!!!! |

Subject: RE: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: GUEST,MCP Date: 12 Mar 03 - 03:35 PM You can look at the Smithsonian Database Search Page (I didn't see it there, neither in Folkways nor all sites). But I did find an online reference (in a course syllabus) to "The Smithsonian Collection of Classic American Song (a cassette collection with no number)". Mick |

Subject: RE: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: JohnInKansas Date: 12 Mar 03 - 03:46 PM The Smithsonian Collection CDs are pretty generally available at your local book shops - Barnes or Borders are the largest in my area, although they're not "fast movers" so may not be in local stock. Check the CD for an ISBN number (some have them, some don't), and/or record number, and it can probably be ordered in fairly quickly. Or try Barnes (bn.com) or Borders (borders.com) or Amazon on the web? John |

Subject: RE: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Mar 03 - 12:57 AM Over the years, I've picked up a mumber of CD's from the "Smithsonian Collection of Recordings." The last time I was at the store at the Smithsonian's history museum was 1999, and they had everything from the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings at clearance prices. They said the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings had been discontinued. This was a separate operation from Smithsonian/Folkways, which is still going strong. It's too bad, because the Collection offered some wonderful music. Some folk, but mostly other styles of music. I especially liked their American Songbook series, which featured the works of the great American songwriters of the first half of the twentieth century. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: wilco Date: 13 Mar 03 - 11:57 AM Thanks. I corresponded with Smithsonian Folkways. They said, " ... no longer available, as Smitsonian Recordings has been defunct for several years.... Smithsonian Folkways did not acquire their emaining inventory, but.... it was sold at Smitsonian shops until they ran out. ....Try Amazon.... Listed as Classic Country Music." |

Subject: RE: Can't locate a Smithsonian Collection From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Mar 03 - 12:51 PM Hi, Wilco - I'm going to post the list of songs from the Smithsonian Classic Country Music Collection. I don't think it's what you're looking for, but it's an interesting collection. It does sound that from our perspective here, the collection you are seeking would be far more significant. Too bad it isn't available. If somebody's interested in a particular track from the "Country Music" collection, let me know. -Joe Offer- Various Artists / Classic Country Music: A Smithsonian Collection (Disc 1)
