And now they'll milk it for every scrap of drama they possibly can. I imagine there will be a movie and/or a book in the works pretty soon. Something I thought was interesting... they interviewed the people who made the 911 call. Now, I suppose that's not really weird in and of itself, but had I been the person who made the call, I would have refused the interview, on the grounds that I had done nothing heroic, only what was right. That's just me, though. Others may feel differently. |

For real news, the News Hour on PBS is pretty good, and Nightline. Ms. Smart is unfortunately now a Public Figure of sorts, made that way as a consequence of her family's desperate search. Until she's 18 the media won't be able to touch her too much, but after that, she's on her own. Enquirer and Penthouse will be knocking on her door and pawing through her trash. What she said to the police when they first found her ("you think I'm the girl who ran away") sounds like she was working her way through the verbage put in place for her to use by her abductors. Did they convince her that she really was a runaway? And she had a better family now? I don't give any credibility to that remark--it is probably like the silly stuff one says when waking from a nightmare. (She's from a staunch and well-to-do Mormon family--they'll manage to reverse that brainwashing quickly, we can be sure of that.) The Amber Alert started here in the Dallas Fort Worth area in Arlington, Texas, when Amber Hagerman was seen snatched from her bike, and found dead a few days later. The thought was that if an alert had gone out at the beginning, the truck would have been spotted and perhaps she could have been rescued. They have been issued occasionally since then, and have been proven to work. No one has been arrested in Hagerman's murder, as I recall. SRS |

It is ALMOST as simple as that right now, and the cops being hired WILL use the technology that way. You know that as well as I do. They'll get busted now and then, but they were on their way to jail anyway as gang members. New license plates are burned with a bar code so cameras on interstates can scan and register your car as you drive. And GPS boxes in cars can be tracked, and if you'll recall there was a move not long ago to implant everyone with microchips (a move which will be resurrected, don't worry). But for now it's just the 'Amber Alert'. No. When you feel you support the Amber Alert legislation, just imagine that gang member telling your grandkid to do it 'one more time, bitch'. And hell no Amber Hagerman hasn't been found...it would interfere with the NEED to look for her if she was found. They built a whole new technology around her name, so do you really think she'll EVER turn up? |

The neighbor called police and provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle, but couldn't recall much else. Arlington Police and the FBI interviewed other neighbors and searched for the suspect and vehicle. Local radio and TV stations covered the story in their regular newscasts. Four days later, Amber's body was found in a drainage ditch four miles away. Her throat had been cut. Her kidnapping and murder remain unsolved.
