Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: GUEST,Carol Date: 08 Mar 11 - 08:31 PM Well that old adage really got around.....my mother who was born in 1894 always recited that little jingle and she was born in New Jersey and lived most of her life in New York...... My guess is that a lot of people have heard that or a reasonable facsimile of it, I still say it and here it is 2011. Regards and keep on tossing back that lemonade. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: GUEST,travellinpat Date: 25 Jan 10 - 02:14 PM No idea whether this is used in any productions -- but it seems the lyric could be sung to "Tammany". (When I was a kid my grandpa sang "Ham and Eggs" to the tune of "Tammany.") Old New York political song, not hard to find. But does that connect with St. Louis? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: the lemonade lady Date: 25 Mar 03 - 10:21 AM I feel I should be saying something here...I use a cocktail shaker to disolve the sugar. I'm sure it's more effective than a spade! #8-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade From: Rapparee Date: 25 Mar 03 - 08:35 AM 1904, huh? I knew it was back aways. Shucks, my ggaunt went back aways, since she died in 1965 at 92. Yeah, the Glass Menagerie is set in St. Louis. Maybe one of the lemonade vendors there used it? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Mar 03 - 07:07 AM Hmmm. We have a common thread here. (1) Tennessee Williams was born in St. Louis and I believe "The Glass Menagerie" was set there. (2) Rapaire's great-great-aunt learned the chant in St. Louis. (3) I was born in St. Louis -- although my dad wasn't. He only lived there from about 1943 onwards, I think. He was born in 1899 in Kentucky. By the way, the St. Louis World's Fair, a.k.a. the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was held in 1904. (Click here.) My dad didn't attend, but my maternal grandfather did. His first wife had recently died, and his friends chipped in to buy him a ticket (He lived in Arkansas.) hoping it would cheer him up. I think it did. The centennial is coming up next year... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade From: Rapparee Date: 25 Mar 03 - 06:31 AM My Great-Great Aunt used to sort of sing/chant "Lemonade Made in the shade By an old maid Stirred with a spade" whenever we'd make lemonade. Sometimes she'd switch the last two lines. She said once that she'd learned it in St. Louis, and since the only time she'd ever been there (as far as I know) was for the Exhibition of 1898 (I think that's the date) it might originated there. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Mar 03 - 06:26 AM That's something my dad used to say (and I don't think he got it from Tennessee Williams) -- but he just recited it; he didn't sing it. I don't know if it ever had a tune. It's similar, I suppose, to "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream." I wonder if it's something that street vendors used to shout. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: Sorcha Date: 24 Mar 03 - 11:58 PM I found LOTS of references to this, but no more for the actual jingle. And it appears to be a jingle/ad. Sorry! |
Subject: Tune Req: Lemonade lemonade made in the shade and From: GUEST,Amanda Date: 24 Mar 03 - 11:33 PM In T. Williams' THE GLASS MENAGERIE Amanda sings a snippet of a song about lemonade: Lemonade, lemonade made in the shade and stirred with a spade and then it's good enough for any old maid. Does anyone recognize this song/jingle? If so, do you have the music or can you suggest a source for it. Thanks |
