Subject: RE: Irish songs, legends, Midis From: ard mhacha Date: 28 Mar 03 - 04:01 PM Having gone through the Verse on the Site I enjoyed reading a lot of the old Poems from my school days. The old woman of the roads, always reminded me of the old lady who smoked a pipe and who I used to see sitting under the shelter of a hedge, maybe dreaming like the poor woman in the Poem, "O to have a little house". That was over 50 years ago, all of those travellers have passed on, now they are replaced with the poor souls from Eastern Europe who beg for their daily bread outside of our Suprmarkets. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: Irish songs, legends, Midis From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 29 Mar 03 - 07:22 AM Bravo Ard Mhacha. If you went by some of the press coverage and the comments of some of the DJs, you'd think the whole of Ireland depised those "poor souls from Eastern Europe." Thanks for pointing the way to The Hirin - I'd completely overlooked those links at the top. And thanks to guest Q for pointing to the site in the first place. I'll be lost in it for quite a while. |

Subject: RE: Irish songs, legends, Midis From: ard mhacha Date: 29 Mar 03 - 01:45 PM Fionn, I have a very old friend, still hale and hearty and I have seen him on many a cold winter day buying a Fish and Chip and taking it to some of these poor women. Old Joe on giving this welcome meal to the lady far from her homeland has always the usual comment" get that down ye darli`, it`ll warm your inside". I have also seen both rich and poor walking past and completely ignoring them. My contribution is always money, but Joe never fails to supply his hot meal, having worked all over England he understands what it is like to be alone in a strange land, and I suppose his form of charity is more appreciated. Ard Mhacha. |
