My, my what twenty years will do. Yet, it's not really that long ago in the greater scheme of things. At any rate, Detroit did indeed give a key to the city to Saddam Husein and made him an honorary citizen.

I think there should be protestors in the streets of Detroit, and the Mayor, assuming he is still alive, run out of the city on a rail!

Fascinating kat. I always thought that was some kind of 'urban myth'. One of the things that really gives me the chills about this guy, was how in those days, (when he came to power) he would "OUT" supposed traitors in his audience, FROM the PODIUM! I saw the films where the police would come down the isle and simply grab someone...who would never be seen again. Can you IMAGINE the nervousness and nausea in THAT audience.

I watched this short black and white film clip a few days ago...and the Military flunkies ON THE STAGE with him looked paralitic as well.

However, I guess it doesn't matter what kind of tyrant you are as long as you cough up some dough.

I spent a LONGGG time wandering around a Glasgow Cathedral a few years ago (St. Mungo's I think) and couldn't help but notice that quite a few "civilians" were buried in big time crypts over the centuries. I asked a person standing there whether these would be war heroes or politicians. He said, "They might have been, but they only got here cuz they left all their money to the church.

...if I am remembering correctly Coleman Young was the mayor of Detroit at the time. He was almost as corrupt as Saddam and successfully looted Detroit's coffers and reigned over the demise of a once great city, IMHO. (former Detroiter, hg)
