Subject: RE: BS: Things you grew up with, still around From: Ely Date: 28 Mar 03 - 04:31 PM I love Vernors! It makes everyone else in my family choke. Valomilks (like Reese's peanut-butter cups but with marshmallow instead of peanut butter) Tak-A-Boost/Drink-A-Toast (a weird New Jersey drink--it comes as a concentrated syrup and tastes kind of like flat Dr. Pepper. You eat pretzels when you drink it. My mother is from New Jersey and she brings gallon jugs back whenever she visits her family.) Those little metal cap bombs--do kids play with caps any more? We had six-shooters, too. We've had Teaberry gum (and Black Jack, the licorice gum) as long as I can remember. We used to get it at REI before it went yuppie. Horehound candies |
Subject: RE: BS: Things you grew up with, still around From: Beccy Date: 28 Mar 03 - 04:52 PM The key with Vernor's is that you cannot inhale through your nose when taking a drink from the can. The ONLY way to drink it is from the can with the exception of Boston Coolers (which reminds me!!!) Boston Coolers (Vernor's G.A. mixed with vanilla ice cream. mmmmmm) Pork Rinds (what can I say- I grew up in MI *and* KY) Jello brand pudding (chocolate) Knox blocks (BIG YUM!!! Subject: RE: BS: Things you grew up with, still around From: Ebbie Date: 28 Mar 03 - 05:41 PM I have a l o n g memory- I was born in 1935. Practically the only thing that hasn't changed is drugstores. They smell just as they did when I was a kid. Then some time back I inadvertently bought Pepsodent tooth paste. Taste memory rushed in- it's the brand we used when I was little, although we used tooth powder, as opposed to paste. I don't know if they even make tooth powder any more. |
Subject: RE: BS: Things you grew up with, still around From: Kim C Date: 28 Mar 03 - 06:00 PM What's a Boston Cooler and can I make one in Nashville? Tidy Cat clay cat litter. I never have been able to warm up to the scoopable kind. I just can't commit to making myself scoop poop out of the catbox every day. They still make Lite-Brites and Easy-Bake Ovens. I never had either one, although many's the time I've been sorely tempted to treat myself. Crayola Crayons in the big box of 64. I know they've changed up a few of the colors, but what the hey. Bonne Bell lip gloss in the glass bottle. That Maybelline mascara in the pink-and-green tube. Dreamsicles and Bomb-Pops. Nestle Quik. I got a chuckle out of Bee-dubya's answer, so I'll add one to it: Billy Graham. And another: Mike Wallace. The Tonight Show, although the host has changed. The Grand Ole Opry, again, the lineup has changed but the show must go on. Kraft cheese slices in the plastic wrap. Not real cheese in my estimation, but great for grilled cheese sammiches. Pall-Mall cigarettes. My dad used to smoke em. Chuck Berry. The Rolling Stones. Aerosmith. George Jones. |

Subject: RE: BS: Things you grew up with, still around From: Beccy Date: 28 Mar 03 - 07:26 PM Kim C- I figure if we could make Boston Coolers in Northern Michigan, Southern Kentucky, and now in Western New York, I figure you're safe making one in Nashville. Take a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream and add it to a great deal of Vernor's Ginger Ale in a blender. Whir it up a couple times so that you still have some nice chunks of ice cream. Pour into a tall glass. Serve with a straw and an iced tea spoon. ...And I say GO FOR THE LITE BRITE. It was my favorite toy as a kid and it is my favorite toy to use with my kids. It's actually a venue for artistic expression. You don't HAVE to use the templates they give you. You can use the back of the black sheets or use the blank ones. It's really, really fun and it's a cheap thrill for $10. Do it- be a kid again!!!!!! Beccy |

I've got my dad's Yankee Clipper--I can't use it here in Texas, but I nearly killed myself on it a few times when we lived in Colorado and could get good ice tracks on the hills in the winter. My mother pines for Red Hot Dollars (which are actually fruit-flavored, go figure). They still make them but a lot of places don't carry them. I almost forgot Necco wafers. Hippie girls with that perpetually startled look in their eyes like they were thrown from a horse when they were kids. I don't know if they still make those girls, or if people restore them in the garage like vintage cars. In my short film, Youbetchurrassic Park, a crazed businessman finds some old hippie DNA in a petulie bottle in the pocket of a mohair jacket, and clones them on an island, for tourists. When scientists arrive to study them it kind of gets Hair-y--they turn on, and begin to question basic tenets of scientific method, chemistry and physics. |

I didn't remember crayons - I had Derwent pencils. Eventually I had 72 full length pencils (they're on the bookshelf beside me). But only 6 or maybe 12 half length ones when I was at school. Wagon wheels (mashmallow filled biscuits in case they were only a local treat). In my day in an open waxed paper bag, now hermatically sealed in foily/plasticy stuff. Half the fun is gone. Fantales (my colleagues were sharing a bag & the wrappers yesterday). Minties, like Fantales a threat to teeth, we used to tear the wrappings around & around & around & try to make the longest trail. Skateboards - a 45 year old friend got on his nephew's skateboard recently & fell on his bum, bruising it very badly. But he still remembered how to fall, even to he had forgotten to practice a bit before trying something elaborate, BP Petrol - my parents had a garage with a shop where our dog Lassie used to eat Wagon Wheels unless Dad put the box on the counter.
