I seem to detect that this server is not in the U.S.A. and I sense a British presence so from a dad in Texas who believes that there are middle eastern terrorists who want to kill me and my family and Saddam Hussien would happily provide them with the means and support if he could assure anonymity, I would like to extend my thanks and that of many others for your contributions and support in this extermination and liberation. It was very disheartening to me that many of the first casualties were British soldiers when the ratio of participants might have led me to believe they would be fewer. It leaves no doubt that y'all are right there beside us at the front in the most dangerous roles. Thank you all again and we will say a prayer for you and them tonight.

Of course it could be that Britain has a long history of meddling in other people's affairs and is loath to give it up, even if another nation is now better able to do it. Don't get me wrong, somebody has to be the world's policeman, especially with so many nasty people running the show in so many nations. If we rely on the UN we'll wait for ever to get any thing done.

I assure you that there are folks in the middle east wishing you harm. I live here in downtown New York, and we saw that this is the case. The particular folks who did us this damage had NO conection to Iraq, but rather were almost all Saudis and funded by Saudis apparantly. Even if we were to go after Saudi Arabia, the most we can hope for is to be as safe as they are in Jafa Isreal, if we continue in this way to create more enamies. I will remind you that for 800 years England sought to subdue the Irish and to no avail, Peace comes with diplomacy and cooperation.
Much of the anti American sentiment is caused by the same thing which cause many nations to hate England (a funny love hate relationship) before WWII. When a nation removes more of the worlds resourses than its share, without concern for poverty in those nations, folks get angrey and do bad things. If we help to organise an Asian and third world common market, we would truely be safer than if we continue to kill men women and children in market places.
I share this with you, not only as a Quaker, but as a political scientist who graduated from a top ten law school. We have to return to the tradition of electing the smarter guy. The school yard bully is seldom the intelect in the school, and we have to stop electing them in order to be really safe.
On a final note, you are much safer out there in Texas than we are here at the focal point of the worlds distrust, so I urge you to chose peace.

Mr Green Genes, I think you'll find you've come into a cafe where very few of us, Brits or otherwise, would want anything to do with supporting "extermination." As you are given to saying your prayers (which to me, a non-believer, sits oddly with your views), maybe you could find time to say a prayer for the Iraqis who are, and will be, killed in vastly greater numbers than the US/UK losses.

Many being killed are just innocent civilians of course. But even among the combatants, many are conscripts, forced to fight, sometimes in the face of threats to their families. Their tanks are no match for Abrahams and Challenger IIs (it took another C-II to take out the only one lost so far), their equipment is often pathetic, the Pentagon whines like hell if they get access to, for instance, night-vision aids, and frankly they are being slaughtered in a hugely unequal contest.

I can't join you because I don't believe in it.

I'm not a pacifist, if a fight is needed then it's needed. Diplomacy ( and it a French word - imagine that) should always be tried, tried and tried again, and when all the options dry up then try diplomacy again.

2 major powers Britain and The USA, with all their Intelligence sources, couldn't come up with anything to justify the war.

No - I don't believe it's right.

Hi Green Genes, come to New York, I will introduce you to many many Muslims of good faith who mean you no harm. One, for example works for the American Friends Service Committee, there are men and women of good faith in all faiths and nations. It is the failure to see this that leads to the WTC event or us bombing women and children in a market place. Part of being a "good Christian" is being brave enough to love without fear. I just get a kick out of the way some people use the world "foreigner". A lot of English speaking people, particularly British people, seem to think it means anyone not like them. And that includes those times when the English speaking person is in a country that is not their own.

A foreigner is someone who is foreign to (ie: not from) the country they happen to be in at the moment. So if a British person or an Australian person is in, say, an Arabic country, it is the British or Australian person who is the foreigner, not the other way around.

Wog has developed several meanings. This one is perhaps folklore, but I was told many years ago that the term originated in the British Office in Egypt, in a memo by a civil servant requesting that local dignitaries be referred to as "worthy oriental gentlemen."

The OEG has several definitions (orig. British, but now widespread):
1. -a vulgarly offensive name, especially for one of Arab extraction.
-Sea slang, F. Bowen: lower class Babu shipping clerks on the Indian coast.
-Baghdad Shetches, by Clark: I could see what she was thinking..."They call us wogs."
-Officers and Gentlemen, Evelyn Waugh: He turned up in western Abyssinia, leading a group of wogs.
2.- the Arabic language.
3. as adjective.
4. Wogland- a foreign country.
Also wogger. British origin but has been picked up in all English speaking countries. I have heard Frenchmen called wogs in England and Canada.

Pom- W. H. Downing, Digger Dialect, 1919. Pommy, an English soldier.
Pommy- a derogatory term for an immigrant from England. In print by 1915, but older. Also an adjective, as in "a lot of pommy jackeroos and just as hopeless."

Guest, Q, "wog" seems to have dropped out of common usage, to some extent anyway, though all your dictionary definitions are perfectly correct.

A slightly less derogatory name for Arabs, in fairly common use in the British Army, is "raghead" (or sometimes "towelhead"). This refers to the wearing of the "shemagh" or "keffiyah", the common headdress among many Arabs.

The Arabic language is often referred to as "wormspeak", referring to its calligraphy which can appear to be an unbroken wavy line.


Both these terms might be considered offensive, but in mitigation, offensive language is the lingua franca of the British Army. (You should hear what they called the Falkland Islanders).

It might be said that the British Army has had longer and closer ties to the Arabic world than most, especially since large numbers of officers and NCO's served at one time attached to the Army of the Sultan of Oman. Some of these may well be still serving in the Gulf.
