Library patron is looking for the lyrics to a song that she thinks originated in the Spanish Civil War. It would have been sung by American volunteers. Part of the lyrics had to do with "changing generals." Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

There is a song about the four generals including Franco, each leading a "column" of soldiers from different directions against the Republican armies (with the "Fifth Column" being anti-republicans furnishing intelligence, performing sabotage, etc. This was the origin of the phrase, "the fifth column," meaning spies, saboteurs, and other traitors, hidden among the loyal citizens of a nation at war). I don't know the song, but it may be somewhere in one of Oak Publications' song books.

Take a look at this Website: CANCIONES REPUBLICANAS DE LA GUERRA CIVIL ESPAÑOLA - as of 2002, it had 89 songs in its collection of Republican Songs of the Spanish Civil War, in a variety of languages.
Looks like a wonderful site.

It is a wonderful site. But if you go browsing there, avoid 'The Internationale'. The recording is painfully bad. I reccomend the French National Anthem (I can't spell the right name) sung in Spanish. They also have Die Moorsoldaten.

I have posted links to the old Granada series of six TV films about the Spanish Civil War on the Mudcat link called

Lyr Req: Jack Atky & All: Spanish Civil War Song

The series is on You Tube but is I think unavailable elsewhere. I thought some of you who posted on this thread might be interested.

Regards, Geoff

Hi,
I am trying to find information about a song mention in a Spanish anarchist testimony but I haven't been able to find anything. Could you help me? The text said: "The Spanish Civil War hadn't ended with the playing of "Carmen Mejorada" on the radio on the third of March 1939"

Thank you,

José Ignacio Alvarez

Hello GUEST,jose I. Alvarea, I have not heard of the song Carmen Mejorada but there are several internet sites which are about the Spanish songs. You can find the addresses of some using this link thread.cfm?threadid=128093#sites

I am not quite sure of your meaning when you say "The Spanish Civil War hadn't ended with the playing of "Carmen Mejorada" on the radio on the third of March 1939"

Third of March 1939 was a bit early as the date of the end of the Spanish Civil War. Franco announced victory on 1st April 1939 and I have seen the date of the end of the war also given as the last day in March 1939.

Perhaps your quote is being factually accurate because the war hadn't ended then. But perhaps it does not matter because it is the song which interests you.

Geoff
