Ironic, innit? Considering that she is a Canadian Master. But you can bet I'll be watching it.

Caution: A BRAG! I shall be bursting with pride as this show airs Wed night, because its lead producer, Joel Bernstein was my prize guitar student 37 years ago. His mom let me take him to hear her: in a week he had a few tunings figured out, and became her shadow.

Yeah. Just saw it, and what a great show. Joni is a creative artist almost without peer. Bravo for her! As is the case with Dylan, her audience was always playing catch-up, and trying to figure out what in the world was going to happen next. She does not rest on her laurels, and she speaks the raw truth. Thank God there are a few at the top of their craft who do (while the rest mostly just play the marketing game).

Just saw it too!!! Ah Joni! I could drink a case of you too! Something she said hit me so hard on a personal level, I'm still choked. "Sometimes when we rid ouseles of our devils we loose our angels too". A profoundly brilliant and talented woman who knows the price of honesty and is still willing to share it with us.

"If my devils are to leave me, I am afraid my angels will take flight as well." Variously translated, this quote is attributed to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, on withdrawing from psychotherapy, after learning the goals to which it aspired.

Great musician and a pretty good painter. I was sorry to see her smoking cigarettes on the television. Her addiction was not germane. The music was wonderful, and I heard a bit of the jazz period that I had been mostly unfamiliar with.
I grew weary of the gross adulation after a while, however, and found the script short on content and long on gratuitous praise. Her performances were flawless, as they have always seemed to me, and her creativity and clarity of expression were demonstrated adequately by her music. The star worship was superfluous.

As we watched the live and times of Joni Mitchell couple
of thoughts wove in-and-out of the PBS show

Nostalgia - Seeing a double bill around 1969 - Joni Mitchell
and James Taylor (Apple Recording artist) at the
Troubadour Club in LA. When she moved to MALIBU
in the 80's we used to drive by her house a lot.

Clarity of Vision/Voice/Writing - Complete package for me.

CSN&Y - Since she seemed to have amorous/artistic contact with
most of this group, we would be amused to hear NEIL YOUNG
          talk about another Canadian artist

Painting Talent - It wasn't until 1 hour 10 minutes into the
show when they mentioned the word PAINTER

Small World - My wife and I attended a film showing of HEARTBURN
back in the 80's. When the woman with popcorn was
shuffling past our seat we were amazed to see Joni
          up close and all.

Sigh....I'm in love with this woman's talent. Again.

Agreed, Fortunato...the flood of gratuitous praise was a redundant waste of airtime. They should've stuck to the subject matter more...her life and her music (and art). You don't need to keep showering praise on something when it's obviously that good!

They might have drawn some interesting parallels between how Joni chose to market herself (as a multi-dimensional human being) and how the majority of female music stars are marketed now (as virtual prostitutes).

Yes, Little Hawk, a comparison piece to the pierced navel, empty headed pop girls of today. that would have been worth it's salt. cheers, chance

I just saw it...as always, I find her voice, her words and her delivery so moving. She is a true original. I also wish there had been more music (which is what she's all about, after all) and less adulation. And the last bit about her "love child" actually turned me off a bit, somehow...seems they could have ended it on a less contrived note.

Still, any chance to see Joni Mitchell is time well spent. I was sorry they didn't feature anything from her Hissing of Summer Lawns, one of my fav. albums. But it was good to sample some of her stuff I'd never heard.

I just watched it, as well... I was moved, found myself emotional as it took me back so many years, through so many memories of my growing up with Joni's music. I was truly touched and I find myself dispointed with the picking away at the program... too much adulation? I hardly think so... I hardly believe it is possible to provide what she has done for music, for us, with "too much" honor.

Joni it a treasure and her music is beyond anything that we will ever hear again - let it be what it is, such a joy.
