This song is a blues, perhaps from the 20's or 30's?

"Well there's trouble, trouble in my mind but there won't be trouble no more, because the sun's going to shine in my back door someday."

Anyone know the whole thing?

Yes, I found that version but it's not at all close to the one I've heard... I could only make those lyrics fit the meter of the song by doing a re-write, so one or the other must be derivative.

'Trouble in Mind' was written by Richard Jones in the mid-1920s, and was first recorded by Bertha 'Chippie' Hill. It has since been recorded in one form or another by hundreds of artists. Jones' version employed a lot of traditional verses, lines and couplets, and many of the artists who have recorded it have added verses or dropped them or adapted them. The version in the data base provides an amalgum of verses used by many performers (whether it is actually taken from a recorded version I am not sure.).

However, the verse you give, being most probably of traditional derivation, is used in quite a number of other songs and you would have to remember a little more to properly identify it.

Brian

My goodness! I knew Chippie Hill, but I never knew she was the first to record Trouble In Mind. I remember the night she was killed; Don Frye announced her death as follows:

Chippie Hill is dead. She was hit by a truck-----it took a truck. Fine singer, fine woman.

One song that might be close is "Walking my Troubles Away" by Blind Boy Fuller.

Here's the way Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan DUNNIT!

TROUBLE IN MIND
BOB WILLS (W/TOMMY DUNCAN on vocal)

Trouble in mind, I'm blue - But I won't be blue always
'Cause the sun's gonna shine - In my backdoor some day.

I'm gonna lay my head - On some lonesome railroad line
Let that two-nineteen train - Pacify my mind.

Trouble in mind, I'm blue - I have almost lost my mind
Sometimes I feel like livin' - Sometimes I feel like dyin'.

I'm goin' down to the river - I'm goin' to take me rockin' chair
And if the blues don't leave me - Rock on away from here.

Trouble in mind, I'm blue - My old heart is beatin' slow
I never had so much - Trouble in my life before.

My good gal, she done quit me - And it sure does greive my mind
When you see me laughin' - Laughin' to keep from cryin'.

Here's Mother Maybelle Carter's version, as she recorded it with her daughters in 1950 for Decca.
" Sun's Gonna Shine In My Backdoor Someday"

Oh, Sun's gonna shine in my backdoor someday,
Sun's gonna shine in my backdoor someday;
Sun's gonna shine in my backdoor someday,
March winds gonna blow my blues all away.

1. My momma told me long years ago,
Never to marry a man that I know;
Won't give you money, no descent clothes,
What will become of you God only knows.
Ch.
2. Hard times are comin' so I've been told,
Never sell love for an old richman's gold;
Hard times are comin' that much I know,
But love won't help when your hungry and cold.
Ch.
3. Low down woman tried to steal my man,
Low down woman tried to steal my man;
Low down woman tried to steal my man,
And if I catch her I'll kill her if I can.

I guess I should have mentioned that the version I heard was sung by a woman, excerpted on NPR last year. Was it just last year that Chippie Hill died?

Chippie Hill died 7 May 1950.
