Out of idle curiosity I wonder if anyone recalls this foul mouthed Canadian duo from the seventies/early eighties? I came across an album of theirs which was not for vicars' tea parties and nice old ladies. In fact let's face it - it was filth. But I found it funny and I wonder if anyone else here knows anything about them?

Oh the Fox went out on the Town one Night. If it's starts off there, then goes into too many F's to mention, I have a copy on tape somewhere at home.
It did have a few gems on it. I should try and dig it out and blow the dust away.

Yeah, I've a cassette of theirs, "Taking the 'O' out of Country" and a sort-of live folk club appearance on the other side with "The Fox".
It's listenable about once every two years,
Need a copy?

I too would love a copy! The grandly randy old songs are way too hard to find. I had a college friend who had an astonishing repertoire of what we then called "basement songs" and recitations. I would give much to find some of those. Unfortunately some I recall only the general gist and the last line. How could I reach you?

Look up Bowser and Blue for a truely tallented Canadian Duo... they started off nearly as rude but were able to mature and grow out of the bar and university pub crowd...

Actually their puerile filth is still easily available, in worse used record stores everywhere.

I met them once. I can't even remember how I got on the same bill with them, but I seem to remember the audience being in shock. I'm not sure if they were the ONLY Canadian band in history to have an album COVER banned (shades of Spinal Tap!), but if you find one with the Brothers riding a tandem bicycle, grab it! One of them is a double arm amputee, and the other, a double LEG amputee. I thought it was pretty funny, but decent Canadians disagreed.

They may also be the only band with a dozen albums, who worked regularily, who NEVER received even one DROP of airplay. I know THIS much. They were THE favourite band of ALL the biker gangs....but I don't know how much the Hell's Angels paid.

Cheers

Rick

It's just idle curiosity, so thanks Rick. I am not making many claims for their musical stature - and certainly none at all for their taste. They raised a guilty snigger from me - the sort of thing, which like Greycap - I can enjoy after one too many pints about once every two years.

They played around my neck of the woods a lot. The only time that I ever saw them was when they opened for Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps tour at Maple Leaf Gardens. I also believe that I heard that one of them died.

Got your cassettes ready - filled it up with even more puerile filth from David Allan Coe's "Plain Brown Wrapper" LP, plus some other non-filthy, 'just plain talent' stuff.
I'll be at the post office tomorrow night - enjoy.

"....but I don't know how much the Hell's Angels paid."

I suspect they paid well. Friend was telling me that his band once for a short time was the favoured party band for a certain bike gang in Windsor, Ontario, after accepting a very high-paying gig to play for the "annual banquet" of a "bowling club" that turned out to be called Satan's Choice. The money was great but the gigs were VERY scary. The band finally had to break up to get out of it.

I hadn't heard any McL&McL in many years - but this summer heard a very drunk 20-something belting out their lyrics over his battered guitar at a NS Bluegrass festival. It was very late at night out among the campsites, and the biggest draw was his young friend who was an absolute magician with a homemade Dancing Dan.

Don't know about either the Hell's Angels or Satan's Choice, but for a few years the local biker's club liked to hire the Neil Young tribute band I was in. They were more than repectful, always fed, watered, and paid us well up front, and helped haul the gear. Not my lifestyle, biker club that is, but they sure did like Neil Young...Motorcycle Mama...

Had I known, M&M might have been a good alternative.

Peace, Mooh.

McLean & McLean were big on the college circuit when I was in Uni.
They were banned here in my hometown at the time but I saw them at Lakehead U. Lots of swearing, lots of beer, lots of fun.

Don't know why you'd want a recording of theirs though. They were only good live.

They sound like they could be a North-of-the-Border version of "Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts" - the premiere Southern party band in the 1950s & 1960s. I think Doug Clark recently passed away.

McClean and McLean - "puerile filth", as Clinton put it, sums them up perfectly. Let's face it, though, they were quite good at it. I saw them once for about 5 or 10 minutes in some bar in Toronto. They sang a song about fucking and one about pubic hair. That was enough to satisfy my curiosity that day.

Dolly Parton's Tits

I'd like to see the coyote eat the road runner
And I'd like to see Kneivel blown to bits
I love to see Rex Humbard lay his hands upon Maude Amiee
But I'd love to see that Dolly Parton's tits
Yeah, I'd love to see that Dolly Parton's tits

Cause they're so big and soft and round
And they don't make a sound (make a sound)
How they look remains a mystery
With my hands stuffed in my pockets
Just thinkin' about Dolly's rockets
Here they come again, my fantasy

I'd like to see Pierre french kissin' Rene in the moonlight
I'd like to see the Mounties take a hit (of sensamilla)
And I'd like to see Ed Allen pull his muscle on the TV
But I'd love to see that Dolly Parton's tits
Yeah, I'd love to see that Dolly Parton's tits

Cause they're so big and soft and round
And they don't make a sound
How they look remains a mystery
With my hands stuffed in my pockets
Just thinkin' about Dolly's rockets

From http://www.macleanandmaclean.com/:

MACLEAN AND MACLEAN LIVE' CD

"After Gary's death Blair decided to release a CD of a show they had performed in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1996, in Gary's memory. The show was jammed with people and was hot and hard hitting. It captures the comedy and the energy the two of them created together on stage and their magical ability to make everyone laugh. Their rapid fire dialogue reveals the warped minds and black humour that was MacLean and MacLean. Blair took the recording into Lakewind Sound Studio in Cape Breton where it was digitized and turned into this incredible CD which is available only through this website. Much of the material has never been recorded before. It also includes all your favourites including 'I've Seen Pubic Hair' and 'Fuck Ya'. Part of the proceeds from the sale of each CD goes to the MacLean Family Trust Fund for Gary's children. The price for each CD is $20.00 plus $6.00 for shipping (regular mail). You can order the CD by e-mailing Blair at
macleanandmaclean@shaw.ca. We accept VISA or you can send a money order. We do not accept cheques or COD."

I've seen them "live" at least 3 times and had a sore gut for 2 days from laughing. Amazing how they could take the stage and keep it moving so solid! I am sure we'll get the memorial cd.

I saw them at The Palace in Halifax years ago. Hilarious. One line from that show has stuck in my head all these years. It was around the time that women were getting toxic shock syndrome from tampons. The premise was that testing was being done using labratory rats and tampons, and one rat says to the other "holy fuck, I feel like I've got a Sealy Posturpedic stuffed up my ass!"

I worked with and knew the McLeans for years and thought they were very funny men. Offstage, they were the nicest guys you could know and very clean in their conversations with friends and people they would meet.
I was very shocked to hear of Gary's passing even though I knew for a year prior that he was not well.

I discovered this page on Oct 30th 2008 while searching for confirmation of the Death of Blair Mclean on the 29th. I have yet to find any info, but if anyone would like to know about the brothers, please e-mail me at    tordave@yahoo.com , and I will do my best to reply.

I went to school with Gary McLean in Glace Bay Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, at St Michael's High. We were in the same class Grade 10, and we became good friends.

I left my little village of Port Morien in 1962 when my family moved to Ontario, and I had not seen him again until 1986 or 87, when he and Blair did a show, in Brampton Ontario. I went back stage that night and we talked for awhile, unfortunately that was the last time I saw him, he was a great guy,

I never even heard him swear when I knew him, his stage act seemed out of character from the guy I knew. Blair was a pretty good artist, and I found a drawing of his in a History book at St Michael,s that he had done in the margin when he went there, I was so impressed with it Gary had Blair draw me a cartoon character and brought it in to School for me.

I was shocked to hear of his passing, I just found out yesterday that Gary had passed away in 2001, when I heard that Blair died. God Bless them. R.I.P.

Thanks for posting TourDave and Barry Giovanetti. It is interesting to hear that their onstage characters were essentially just put on. I liked their records in a schoolboyish way. It is not the music I would like to hear every day, but just every once in a while it is fun. I am sure they must have been very good entertainers - if not to everyone's taste.

Just found out from this website that Blair was gone. Great shame. Although there is a lot of risque comedy out there, these two had a delivery that was astonishingly clever and very Nova Scotian.
Saw these two gems a couple of times and listened to them often in the eighties, usually with a few friends and a lot of beer.
Hope there is a good archive somewhere to save the entire works of these unique Canadians.

@GUEST,KITNPLAYN

Dude, you seriously have pictures of the Blindman Valley Ski Hill Concert of June 3, 1979?????

I would be eternally grateful if somehow you could share them with me!

I was there......without a camera.....easily the CRAZIEST day of the decade for me!

If you want to contact me:
