Subject: Lyr Req: Going back to the Red Clay Country From: GUEST,Bob Date: 03 Apr 03 - 12:06 PM I think The New Christy Minstrels did a song with the lyrics: I'm going back to the red clay country I'm going back where I was born... I've said goodby to the friends I've made here... But I can't remember the name of the song. Thanks, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Going back to the Red Clay Country From: Deckman Date: 03 Apr 03 - 12:57 PM I remember Roger Abrams (sp?) from the East Coast bringing this song to Seattle in the late 50's. I remember somewhat different verses. It'll take me a couple of days, but I'll try to locate his version. CHEERS, Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Going back to the Red Clay Country From: Art Thieme Date: 04 Apr 03 - 08:51 PM That was the same song---but longer. Sandy Paton had something to do with it's dissemination I think. Odetta had it on an early album too but hers was the shorter one. Sandy told me, if I'm remembering it right, that she got it from Roger Abrahams. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Going back to the Red Clay Country From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 05 Apr 03 - 10:18 AM Jimmy Struthers, a convict at the State Farm, Lynn, VA., who was serving a life sentence for murder, recorded a version for the Library of Congress in 1936, under the title Take This Hammer. This is on Deep River of Song - Virgina and the Piedmont. Minstrelsy, Work Songs and Blues (Rounder CD 1827). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Going back to the Red Clay Country From: GUEST,Bob Date: 05 Apr 03 - 12:04 PM The lyrics from Sorcha start out similar to the version I remember, but I clearly remember the line: "I've said goodbye to the friends I've made here." And I don't recall a thing about "Iron Shackles." |
