For a private CD I'm burning in of recordings I've taped off the radio, I need the following.
Is one TIM SMITH indeed a singer from the British Isles, who either has or fakes a great Scottish accent? Did he record a song "Dun the Moor" -- what album is it / was it on?

-- Thanks, Harold from Hawthorne, NJ

Harold from Hawthorne,
Would that be the same 'Dun the Moor' as sung by Peter Bellamy on a double C.D i have of his recordings, one of which is called something along the lines of'Mr.Kipling, Mr. Bellamy and the tradition' and the other 'Rummy conujurin' tricks'.

Just a thought, i'm sorry I don't have the C.D now (i'm working overseas and left it in the UK) but maybe someone else knows if this is the same song, has the cd and can help you. I've got a feeling it might be the same. Lyrics as I remember were something like 'Down the Moor, Down among the heather'?

Sorry I can't be of more help
Chris

'Doon the moor amang the heather' might have a better chance. There are lots of variants of this song.

Indeed, I just tried a Digital Tradition search and found a Scots and an Irish version under 'Doon the moor', plus of course Skippin barfit through the heather, which in turn leads on to The queen among the heather and many other variants - e.g. As I came ower the Cairn o Mount. [I came over the high Cairn o Mount road the other day - finest FM reception in Scotland.]

This could well be Tom Smith from Ayr, who, like many of us, sings "Doon the Moor Amang the Heather" and has recorded this song. This was a private recording and although a large number were sold/distributed I have no details of title or whither this is still avalable. Tom was at last year's "Commonground on the Hill in Scotland" and should be at this year's, the web address is www.commongroundscotland.com . On the home page, Tom Smith is the chap in the blue check shirt playing the mandoline. Also, like many of us, his version came via the recordings of the fabulous Irish singer Eddy Butcher.
          cheers.

This broadside printed 1800 - 1830 has the words that I am most familiar with.

O'er the muir amang the heather
