Could anyone suggest any good Romany(ie?) Cds or tapes? I'd sort of like some that are up beat and hearty. I heard some of their music and stories on Sound and Spirit the other day and I bacame interested in music. I'll go to the S and S website to see what it suggests.

WE...You might try to find the sound track for Lacho Drom, , a spellbinding documentary film that traces the migration of Gypsies through space and time from the deserts of India to contemporary Europe. The music is fantastic, as is the film.

Try Musical Traditions, Veteran and Topic for recordings of UK travellers. Most sing in English but there are a few songs in Romani around.

Taraf de Haidouks is a band from Romania. They are as authentic as it gets. I was fortunate enough to catch them on tour last year. Their CD is on the Nonesuch label.

I'd also reccommend Latcho Drom. If you can locate a copy of the film it is worth purchasing. One of the most beautiful pieces of film I've seen.

There is a c.d called "Gypsy Caravan" on the putumayo label. They have a web site - the address is www.putumayo.com.
It is a good sampler with people like Saban Bajramovic on. He is fantastic! Aswell as manouche swing by Coco Briaval. Well worth digging out.

If Macedonian music interests you, Esma Redzepova is the best---Of course, it is important to know that the music that Roma play for themselves is different from the music that the play for money--

The soundtrack of Emil Lotianu's film Tabor uhodit v nebo ('The Gipsy Camp Emigrates to Heaven', based on Maksim Gorkij's early short stories, [Soviet] Moldova 1975) might be worth lending an ear to.

Sorry, rest of thought was that the music that Roma play for entertainment tends to be whatever is the local music, though often with a their own flair--probably worth mentioning that Flamenco music and dance are Roma traditions--
