Does anyone have an address for Utah Phillips? I know he's not a computer type, so no point in asking for an e-mail address.

At the ripe young age of 72, I'm finally biting the bullet and producing a solo CD, and there are one or two of his songs that I'd dearly love to include on it. I'll be doing 50 to not more than 75 copies, giving away many of them to friends and relatives, but some will be offered for sale at open mikes and the like on occasion. I need to find out what he'd charge for permission to use it/them.

I know of a musician who sings at Starbucks--
any chance he could use your "she'd rather make coffee than love "song

Bruce Phillips...
but i found a better one on his web page..
I would also suggest that the radio station
where he has his weekly Loafer's Glory show
might n=be able to pass on communications..

Utah does not have an email address. He tried it at one time and it wound up taking too much time out of his very busy day. So he prefers orders to be mailed or called in. And as his answering machine says: Feel free to leave a rant or a rave or anything else you feel he should know about.

"Studio" is my computer room.

I've found that it's LOTS harder to record a song than to do it either for myself or an audience, for two reasons:

Number one, the unforgiving record that's made, so that a rendition that would be just fine before a live crowd is now going to be heard over and over again, just that way, and the warts will be highly visible just by repetition.

Number two, flowing from that, there's a great tendency to THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE SINGING/PLAYING, which in turn makes you (or at least me) tighten up and make mistakes, and/or decreases the fresh, fun approach to the song, deadens it.

For those reasons I'm afraid of what the studio cost would be for the many takes that would become necessary.

If I understand correctly Utah Phillips is not currently broadcasing new segments of his Loafer's Glory radio program. I got the impression the show has been temporarily discontinued, and there is hope of it coming back. CD's of previous shows are available at the http://www.utahphillips.org Website. He was supposed to speak at the February 15 peace rally at the State Capitol in Sacramento, but his wife read his speech for him. she said he was tired, but not sick. He shows up in the audience in a lot of concerts in Nevada City and in the general area - I last saw him at a John McCutcheon concert in January. He officiated at a wedding my wife attended last year.
So, he's active, but maybe not as active as he used to be.

that is true for most of us, i suspect--not as active, etc.
i was surprisedc to see tour dates across the country on his web
site, perhaps that was last year's schedule?? anyway there
is a phone number there and an invitation to phone him for
any reason and leave message on the machine, so no doubt
he would be glad to hear you want to include his songs.
