My darling dear perched on the bow,
spots minnows in our wake
A mink takes float, swims by our boat,
his meal he'll gladly take
The dappled light brings me delight and
warms me through and through
To spend my day with you.

I wrote this last verse to sing with Dave Howard (Lazy Aces) as a duet

From HERE.

THE WINDING STREAM

The song is actually recorded in Bb so the chords shown are with a capo on the first fret.

[A]Oh give to me
A winding stream
It must not be too [E] wide
Where waving leaves
From maple trees
Do meet from either [A] side
The water must
Be deep enough
To float a small [D] canoe
With [A] no one [E] else but you

[A]Do not disturb
My waking [E]dream
The splendor of
That winding [A] stream
Flower in my canoe
Her eyes they looked me [D]through
[A] A maiden fair
With [D] golden hair
Is [A] very [E] much [A] like you

The sparkling trout
Beneath the bank
Does leave his hiding place

According to the late Dr Charles Wolfe, the piece came to them from a fan in British Columbia. Sara Carter recalls that he sent the words only and that it was titled something like 'Flower in My Canoe'. A.P. Carter rearranged the words, the trio worked up a melody and Ralph Peer changed the title.

Sorry. The implication is that AP wrote it. Is that so?

Yo, Chance:

"Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A key to the underlying character of Carlene Carter's 1995 album is the presence of former NRBQ stalwart Al Anderson, who co-wrote four of the 12 songs with Carter and played lead guitar on eight tracks. Carter shares the NRBQ philosophy that traditional eccentricities are more interesting than traditional verities, and she marries unpolished garage-rock rhythms to her excitable vocals about the romantic action down at the local honky tonk. She helps her father, Carl Smith, reprise his 1955 hit, "Loose Talk," while her mama June Carter and her stepdad Johnny Cash help Carlene sing her great-uncle A.P. Carter's "The Winding Stream." At the same time, various members of Prince's Revolution band, Tom Petty's Heartbreakers and the Desert Rose Band are also on hand. The result is a vibrant brand of country-rock which has more in common with Chrissie Hynde than Linda Ronstadt.--Geoffrey Himes"

The language of this song strikes me as victorian, almost Romantic in tone and diction. Yet, I can find no reference for it prior to AP Carter.

In my ear the language of this poem-like song is quite different than APs writing and adaption.

Does anyone know or suspect where this song may have come from?

Chance

My favorite version is by Carlene Carter on her Little Acts Of Treason CD, 1995. You might want to look for that.

Carter Family lyrics should always be welcome here.

Lyrics copied from http://www.icdc.com/~fmoore/carterfamily/winding_stream.htm

THE WINDING STREAM
(The Carter Family)

Oh, give to me a winding stream--
It must not be too wide--
Where waving leaves from maple trees
Do meet from either side.
The water must be deep enough
To float a small canoe,
With no one else but you.

CHORUS: Do not disturb my waking dream:
The splendor of that winding stream,
Flower in my canoe.
Her eyes they looked me through.
A maiden fair with golden hair
Is very much like you.

The sparkling trout beneath the bank
Does leave his hiding place.
Kingfisher from the bough above
So eager to give chase.
The spreading branches overhead,
The sunlight peeking through,
When looking, dear, at you.

[Recorded 10/13/32 Camden, NJ.]
