Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: black walnut Date: 10 Apr 03 - 11:16 AM There you go, Hester! Your answer came right from the horse's mouth. Now...can we talk about your shyness about emailing performers? I don't think performers mind you emailing them at all if you're not longwinded. A request for CD or touring information should be more than welcome, and some of them will even return the favour with a bit of a chat. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Hester Date: 10 Apr 03 - 10:06 AM Thanks, Ian & Inukshuk! I'll send my cheque off right away. Cheers, Hester |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Inükshük Date: 09 Apr 03 - 07:02 PM By all means send for this CD! Apart from a very nice selection of traditional tunes, most of the music and lyrics are originals by Ian. Lots of variety here. Excellent musicianship by the Dawnbreakers (Kate Murphy, Brian Pickell, Geof Somers, David Zdriluk, Anne Lederman, and Ian, of course.) |

Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Hester Date: 09 Apr 03 - 04:08 PM Thanks Inukshuk! Port Dover? I thought he was the curator in Perth (which a native-born Perthian once told me was "the illegitimacy capitol of Ontario".) Oh, well ... I guess Ian gets around. "Scotland, Ontario" ... that's a very funny town name. I hadn't heard it before. Appropriate though, for as Spirit of the West once wrote, here in Canada, "there's another oatmeal savage everytime you turn around" (half my family included). We've got every other Scots placename around here, why not the country itself. Cheers, Hester ... who's awfully shy about approaching artists directly via e-mail. (The last one seem to think I was some odd stalker, and she never did arrange to sell me her CD.) |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Inükshük Date: 09 Apr 03 - 03:56 PM If you ever get to Port Dover, check out the museum there. Ian is the curator. Just don't go on Friday the Thirteenth. Also, Ian often drops into weekly Friday night jams at Harry's Place in Scotland, Ontario. His "Signor Farini And Other Adventures" shows Free Range Recordings, 41 Jane St. Paris, Ontario, Canada, N3L 2X8 His email is given as ian.bell@sympatico.ca I'll bet he knows where where to buy the CDs. |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Hester Date: 09 Apr 03 - 03:51 PM Hi, Black Walnut: Thanks for trying. At your suggestion, I searched HMV's catalogue for the Dawn Breakers. No joy there, either. Perhaps I'll get brave and e-mail Ian Davies as you suggest. Um... what exactly is his connection to Ian Bell? Cheers, Hester NP: An a cappella version of Barrett's Privateers on CBC (doesn't sound like Stan, though) |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: black walnut Date: 09 Apr 03 - 01:36 PM Oh great. I just realized that we've both gone to the same site. Sorry Hester! I think maybe you should email your question right to IDEA (Ian Davies). ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: black walnut Date: 09 Apr 03 - 01:29 PM I think you'll find what you want at www.iandavies.com/bell. I haven't had a chance to look at the site closely but it looks like it's heading at least in the right direction for you. I'd started by searching out the Dawn Breakers, a group Ian has been involved with for a long time, with banjo player Kate Murphy.' The first time I heard Ian he was marching in with bagpipes in a kilt at the Songs of Sail Festival at Penetangueshene. That was many years ago. He's a good musician, and a great storyteller! ~b.w. |
Subject: Ian Bell: Canadian Folkie From: Hester Date: 09 Apr 03 - 12:37 PM I really enjoy folk historian/songwriter Ian Bell's contributions to the early morning weekend show "Fresh Air" on CBC radio. His website lists several recordings he has made, but doesn't say where they can be purchased. HMV has no listings for him. Does anyone know where I can purchase some of his recordings? Cheers, Hester |
