Sorry Pied Piper - I know my preference is for songs, but I have tried to include some instrumentals. You'll just have to keep reminding me I'm afraid. Hopefully tonight will redress the balance somewhat, as I'm also playing the track from mat Walklate's CD which I meant to play last week.

By the way, I was criticised by a Saddleworth local for not mentioning a club in the Tameside area, which I didn't even know about! If I don't mention a club, it's not because I don't want to; it's probably because no one has told me about it!

Hey what a great idea Harry & Sara. A great song by the 'aging raver'. In my opinion, Roy Harper's one of the best contempory song writers this country has ever produced. His guitar playing's a bit nifty too! See him in September at the Lowry.

Sorry about Ken Perlman - it was wrong in City Life as well! I tried ..... but I failed!!!

John was good to interview last night - it was difficult not to laugh all the time - he's a real character! And there were loads of calls afer the programme wanting to know more about the Tinkers.

I've got the Rising Sun Band coming in next week, so that should be really interesting.

Thanks for the comments Ali and Leighton. I really enjoyed doing the show - an hour soon passes - especially when it's reduced to forty minutes! We would both have liked to have a couple more tracks of music on and I had a bit more to say as well but those ominous words "...and now we're going to Old Trafford to join Andy Peebles" meant we had to cut it all out. Maybe next time.

I thought Mark did really well. I've got John Howarth coming in next week, and the Rising Sun Band plus Brian Peters the following week.

I nearly had a stand-up fight last night - I was NOT amused about the cricket! And I actually got some complaints by phone after the show about the amount of cricket they'd been subjected to!

The good news is that I've been told that the BBC are very happy with the show, and with the number of supporting messages that they've been getting.

The only fault I could pick up on was that it was too short.:-)

It's not really up to Ali to convince the bosses what a good programme it is - she's already done that - it's up to the likes of you and me to write in and tell them. If it's perceived nobody's listening then they will pull it - simple as that. The trouble with the GMR listening area is that it encompasses plenty of non-premiership football clubs as well as City and United (I don't think they've got a contract for commentary on Utd home games which is why they concentrate on City and Bolton) Tuesday night is usually when the likes of Wigan, Stockport, Rochdale, Bury, etc play midweek games and so there has to be some coverage to satisfy the masses. It may be possible for GMR to keep the 7-00 till 8-00 slot on a Tuesday for the folk show and start the sport programme at 8-00 but we need to convince the station management that we listen to it and we like it and we want it to continue. Write in now - not at the end of August.

Thanks for that Mark. Yesterday I recorded next week's programme as we're off up to Scotland. As it was during the day I didn't invite a guest, so played loads of music - 11 or 12 tracks I think.

Future guests - Mark himself, John Howarth, Rising Sun Band (with Brian Peters), Anthony John Clarke, and a telephone interview with Eric Bogle.

The bad news is that my son is sure that football will be back on in August as GMR are great supporters of Manchester City, and of course, City are in the European Cup this year!

Sorry I didn't get all the diary dates in - I was so worried I'd not have enough material that I took far too much, and then there wasn't time. I've already prepare next week's programme, and I won't make the same mistake (hopefully!!)

Haven't heard the programme myself, but all my family thought it was great - except Geoff and Gareth (my son) said that I kept saying "err" and "um"!! How picky can you get?

I did get loads of calls after the programme, which was lovely. Sorry about the loo - nerves I think! And I was recording an interview with Clive, so couldn't answer the phone at that time. He sang two songs for next week's show.

Ali is using Folkal Point as a basis for her diary dates, so if the info's in there, she'll already have it. For last-minute info, Radio Times gives the number for phone-ins (i.e. during the programme) as 0161 228 2255. There is an email address for the station, [e-mail], but whether Ali would receive anything on that general addy is debatable, as she's only there for a short time once a week.

thanks for the mention of the Day of Dancing and such, it was a brilliant day. Much good singing and dancing, sunshine and lots of folks came out on the best day of the weekend.

The day was completed by an excellent evening of music when Chorlton Folk Club shuffled over from Thursday night at the South West Manchester Cricket Club to Longfords.

Update!

Went in on Monday (armed with questions!) and had another practice. Mike Shaft seems to think my presentation style is OK, and he loves the music I've played so far, but this technical side is hard!! It's OK if everything is going smoothly, but any hiccup, and it really throws me! So I'm having another go on Wednesday evening next week. (Those slidey things Ralph - I now know they have to go in fast and come out slow - bit like sex really, isn't it?!!)

You're right Harry - it looks as if it's definitely going to be the 20th - Oldham may, and Bury definitely, will have play offs the previous week. It will all be made clear this weekend apparently!

The answer to almost all of your quesries was "no" - there's no funding for anything! I will have an Email address - probably something like '[e-mail] etc' - I'll let you know next week. It will go out on the website eventually but the BBC bosses are in discussion about this at the moment because of Artists royalties. I will be available on 0161 628 2255 for around 30 mins. after each programme.

Friend of Longford Park (and other friend)- I know it's not much consolation, but in my practice run on Monday, I did mention your Day of Dance in my Diary Dates bit, so the thought was there!

If the station wants to drop the programme then there's nothing you or I can do to stop them. When the football comes back on in August/September that will take precedent - it always has done and always will do. HOWEVER as I've mentioned before - WRITE, EMAIL, TELEPHONE, make yourself heard, make your views known but don't wait until the LAST programme - do it after the FIRST programme and then again the week after and the week after that. Make a point of telling Mike Shaft what part of the programme you enjoyed so he knows you've listened to it. If Ali has a competition then WRITE, EMAIL, or PHONE IN with the answer even if it's the wrong answer because letters, emails and phone calls equals LISTENERS. One programme that's been long gone used to make up winners because nobody wrote in at all for one competition.

You could do a lot worse than listen to the experience of the forlks from the Lancashire Drift. In my opinion that's been one of the best folk programmes on the radio bar none for some time now. Sorry that Nic Dow is going into semi retirement: he's done a sterling job, and has been ably supported by Jan Loudner, Nic Caffery and Les Bond.
It might be an idea to invite Nic Dow onto your programme to talk about his experiences and to play some of his favourite music.

If I may make a couple of suggestions re the mechanics of actually doing the techie bit...
Try to always have a CD (or tape) ready to go...something about 4 or 5 mins long, for all those little unforeseen problems that, I promise you, will happen!!
In the same vein....Have a few Bits of info near to hand (Gig lists, Club Diaries, etc, etc) for exactly the same reason.

Theres nothing worse than "Dying" on air!! Not good for the heart rate, I can tell you!

Good Luck with the music logging too...Very important to do, and very dull as well!!

Any other specific advice you may need, don't hesitate to get in touch.
You could also contact Mick Peat and Lester Simpson at Radio Derby, I'm sure they could give you lots of advice too.

BTW, will Radio Manchesters Website be streaming the show on the Web??

I was told that it would be May 13th or May 20th, depending on whether there are football play offs or not! My son assures me that it's more likely to be the 20th, as Oldham Athletic are sure to have a play off! So it's in the hands (or the feet) of the gods!

Congratulation on your forthcoming show, I hope it all goes well for you.
Before you begin however I have to say I only half listen to folk programmes on the radio as there seems to be a tendency to push certain artistes at the expense of the many, many local artists. Rarely did I ever hear the likes of Peter Bond or Tom Yates being mentioned yet alone given air time years ago and today people like the Hall Brothers (for example)do not seem to get mentioned. As a dyed in the wool folkie I do not think these programmes encourage people not already involved to attend folk clubs.
As you will know there is so much wonderful talent out there it is a crying shame to concentrate on the limited few that seems to be the case on Radio 2.
I am sure you will do your utmost to retify the situation, if you want to borrow CD's let me know. ..................if the situation remains the same ...............smacked legs!!

In my previous life as a Head Teacher I booked Roy Bailey and John Kirkpatrick to come in to my school, and I know that other schools have done something similar, or are teaching folk songs and / or dances. Bernard - I have been to the Open Door (I was there weekly in the very early days) but have never visited the Railway. But we will! Promise! And I agree - we all need to be telling GMR that we want the programme to continue (I don't supopose they'll listen to me though, will they?) The way I see it is that you'll all only want it to continue if I deliver what you want - so I need to know!

Guest Mark - there's so much here that I've printed it all off! Thanks very much! Someone else asked me about having an Email address, but as yet I don't have an answer. When I next see Mike Shaft (inj 2 weeks, as he's on holiday" there are obviously questions that I ned to be asking him.

Joan - thanks again (see other Email). Re Saddleworth Festival - as I keep saying, but no-one believes me, this will be my last year!

Pied Piper - yes please! Although I think I have quite diverse tastes in folk music, my preference is for the traditional singing, so I'm eager to have loads of ideas re. musicians. This is an area where I have no great knowledge at all, although I am willing to learn!

It will be live, which in many ways I prefer. Although I am doing my own engineering (!!!!!) which I've been told   will be much more useful for me! Brilliant news. Can I put in another plug, for local music(I mean specifically traditional NW material, not just whatever happens to be played by folkies who live in Manchester). There are, I believe, seven different tunes called "The Manchester Hornpipe", for example. Sure people will want to hear all sorts of stuff, and why not, but maybe it could be included in the plan that programmes should have a percentage, however small, of material with local connections. I'd happily come in and play some Joseph Kershaw tunes, for example.

I can only echo Mark's advice to bombard the Beeb with letters and e-mail in support of the programme... a pity that folk music is such a 'Cinderella' topic that we have to resort to such tactics!

Will the Beeb be giving you an e-mail address where we can send our diary dates, or will you have to risk using your personal address?

'Live' recordings will have to be given very careful consideration - past experience tells that it could be perceived as very 'cliquey'. There's always some sour grapes...! I don't envy you that task!

Excellent news about the programme. This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent there is in the North West without forgetting national artists of course. One thing we can all do to help is contact the station saying how much we appreciate the programme when it goes on air. Ali - will you be having an email address for the programme (I think The Parlour has its own address on there) and will the show be going out live or are you recording it first?
What's your record/CD collection like because I doubt GMR will have a vast collection of folk material. I remember when Red Rose did a folk programme, the guy who ran that had a very limited collection and ended up playing Bob Dylan and The Incredible String band tracks most weeks until myself and Pete Rimmer offered him the loan of some of our collection. If you need any help just say and I'm sure we'll be able to help.

Does the station put publicity blurb together for you? If so send it to all the clubs you can think of. If people don't know its on they won't tune in.

Don't forget to tell [e-mail] (me actually)about what's going on and I'll include details on the site. Will the station pay for adverts in magazines? If so get in touch with Paul Holden via www.folknorthwest.co.uk who will sort out a space in Folk North West for you.

There's a lot of people out here who want this show to be successful. If we can help at all please let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Just to let everyone in the Greater Manchester area know that we're getting a new folk programme on BBC GMR. There was one 5 years ago, presented by Mike Billington, but it was axed.

They contacted me a couple of weeks ago to see if I was interested, and I've had a trial at it, so we've now got the go-ahead!

It will go out every Tuesday, probably from 8.00 - 9.00 p.m., and will start either May 13th or May 20th (it depends on the play offs, as it's replacing a football slot!!) Initially it's to run in the summer only, so after that, who knows!!

I really want it to reflect and celebrate what / who's on in the area - so I'd like to do interviews with club / festival organisers, local artists etc..

At the moment I'm calling it 'Sounds of Folk' but I'm open to better suggestions? I'd also welcome your ideas / help / suggestions, as I'm a virgin at all this!!! I'm SOOOOO excited, but equally nervous!!!
