Ali...

Good Luck from us National boys at Broadcasting House too!!
If I may make a couple of suggestions re the mechanics of actually doing the techie bit...
Try to always have a CD (or tape) ready to go...something about 4 or 5 mins long, for all those little unforeseen problems that, I promise you, will happen!!
In the same vein....Have a few Bits of info near to hand (Gig lists, Club Diaries, etc, etc) for exactly the same reason.

Theres nothing worse than "Dying" on air!! Not good for the heart rate, I can tell you!

Good Luck with the music logging too...Very important to do, and very dull as well!!

Any other specific advice you may need, don't hesitate to get in touch.
You could also contact Mick Peat and Lester Simpson at Radio Derby, I'm sure they could give you lots of advice too.

BTW, will Radio Manchesters Website be streaming the show on the Web??

Enjoy yourself
Regards Ralphie

Thanks Ralph,

Your questions are some of the ones that I've got ready for this afternoon's practice! Hopefully I'll also find out when the programme will be starting, presuming they know when the play offs are yet!
I'll keep you all posted!

Spoke to Jan from Lancashire Drift last night for 48 minutes(!!) and she was really helpful!

By the way Mark, Geoff and I think your CD is excellent!

You could do a lot worse than listen to the experience of the forlks from the Lancashire Drift. In my opinion that's been one of the best folk programmes on the radio bar none for some time now. Sorry that Nic Dow is going into semi retirement: he's done a sterling job, and has been ably supported by Jan Loudner, Nic Caffery and Les Bond.
It might be an idea to invite Nic Dow onto your programme to talk about his experiences and to play some of his favourite music.

Good luck with the show.

Good idea Alan. Nic's offered to come on to talk about ballads, and Jan and Ken also have, by way of moral support, which is lovely!

Excellent news.

Shame it will be too late to plug Chorlton Folk Club, Thursdays in the South West Manchester Cricket Club Ellesmere Road Chorlton

or the Free Internation Festival of Dance, Song and allied trades, this Sunday, May 4 in Longford Park between Stretford and Chorlton.

But more of these later

Promises, Raggytash! Don't forget you promised me the best seat in every venue Otley this year.... or something like that.

Good news on the radio show. As one long disillusioned with radio folk music output, I have high hopes. Is there anything we (listeners) can do to ensure the station can't let it drop when the footie season starts again?

Sibelius

If the station wants to drop the programme then there's nothing you or I can do to stop them. When the football comes back on in August/September that will take precedent - it always has done and always will do. HOWEVER as I've mentioned before - WRITE, EMAIL, TELEPHONE, make yourself heard, make your views known but don't wait until the LAST programme - do it after the FIRST programme and then again the week after and the week after that. Make a point of telling Mike Shaft what part of the programme you enjoyed so he knows you've listened to it. If Ali has a competition then WRITE, EMAIL, or PHONE IN with the answer even if it's the wrong answer because letters, emails and phone calls equals LISTENERS. One programme that's been long gone used to make up winners because nobody wrote in at all for one competition.

BBC GMR Switchboard 0161 200 2000 (Say that you want to leave a comment about the folk programme on GMR and see if they know what you're talking about - always a good one that - then say you think it's Mike Shaft you want to talk to and they should put you through if he's there.)

GMR Phone-In 0161 228 2255 (If the lines are open for the programme)

Email Mike.Shaft@bbc.co.uk

Write
Mike Shaft
BBC GMR
PO Box 951
Oxford Road
Manchester
M60 1SD

If demand is great enough they MAY find another slot.

Ali - Thaks for the comment about the CD. Hope the rehearsal went well for you.

Mark

Update!

Went in on Monday (armed with questions!) and had another practice. Mike Shaft seems to think my presentation style is OK, and he loves the music I've played so far, but this technical side is hard!! It's OK if everything is going smoothly, but any hiccup, and it really throws me! So I'm having another go on Wednesday evening next week. (Those slidey things Ralph - I now know they have to go in fast and come out slow - bit like sex really, isn't it?!!)

You're right Harry - it looks as if it's definitely going to be the 20th - Oldham may, and Bury definitely, will have play offs the previous week. It will all be made clear this weekend apparently!

The answer to almost all of your quesries was "no" - there's no funding for anything! I will have an Email address - probably something like 'folk@bbc.gmr etc' - I'll let you know next week. It will go out on the website eventually but the BBC bosses are in discussion about this at the moment because of Artists royalties. I will be available on 0161 628 2255 for around 30 mins. after each programme.

Friend of Longford Park (and other friend)- I know it's not much consolation, but in my practice run on Monday, I did mention your Day of Dance in my Diary Dates bit, so the thought was there!

Please keep the info coming in to me - you can always Email me at work - aobrien@nspcc.org.uk. If anyone wants to send me a demo CD I promise to listen to it, and give it some air time (is that the right word?)

Ali

I can't believe anyone could suggest Lancashire drift as a model folk programme, one presenter is far too fond of her own voice with embarrasing gushing interviews and the other idiot can't use the bloody studio equipment properly resulting in misplayed CD'S and dead air time....so annoying and regular......

PS if you want to listen to a well thought out professional folk forum listen to Stan Ambrose on radio Merseyside (Liverpool European city of culture)need i say more

Ali,
thanks for the mention of the Day of Dancing and such, it was a brilliant day. Much good singing and dancing, sunshine and lots of folks came out on the best day of the weekend.

The day was completed by an excellent evening of music when Chorlton Folk Club shuffled over from Thursday night at the South West Manchester Cricket Club to Longfords.

Oh, and best of luck with the much anticipated programme!

Noreen, that would be wonderful - what about a Jamiesons' every now and then?!

Had the final practice last night - seemed to go well. The definite date is TUESDAY, MAY 20TH, weekly, 7.00 - 8.00 p.m., initally through the summer.

I'm getting really excited now - that will probably change the minute I walk in the studio on the 20th!!!

It should be available on the web, but not yet - BBC are in discussion with their legal dept. re artists royalties arising from people using the website apparently.

I hope you all noticed that the time is now 7.00 - 8.00; Geoff thinks that's better, as people can listen to the show, and still have time to go off to a club after!

Ali is using Folkal Point as a basis for her diary dates, so if the info's in there, she'll already have it. For last-minute info, Radio Times gives the number for phone-ins (i.e. during the programme) as 0161 228 2255. There is an email address for the station, gmr@bbc.co.uk, but whether Ali would receive anything on that general addy is debatable, as she's only there for a short time once a week.

Only just over an hour to go! Can't wait! Good luck, Ali.

Thanks so much all of you - I was a bit jet-lagged as I only got home from Turkey at 5.00a.m!!

Sorry I didn't get all the diary dates in - I was so worried I'd not have enough material that I took far too much, and then there wasn't time. I've already prepare next week's programme, and I won't make the same mistake (hopefully!!)

I've been logged on as a user, so my email is now ali.obrien@bbc.co.uk. I'll be going in during each week to pick up emails, collect my post, and work on the programme.

Haven't heard the programme myself, but all my family thought it was great - except Geoff and Gareth (my son) said that I kept saying "err" and "um"!! How picky can you get?

I did get loads of calls after the programme, which was lovely. Sorry about the loo - nerves I think! And I was recording an interview with Clive, so couldn't answer the phone at that time. He sang two songs for next week's show.

Thanks again - love Ali.
