Taggart and Wight do a few best are "The Cheshire Set" and "Big in Birkenhead" and a new one " Its Festival Season Again".

I noticed that someone mentioned NRBQ, which prompts me to recommend their wacky friend Chandler Travis; for more info see:

As leader of the gone-but-not-forgotten bands Club Wow and Incredible Casuals, Chandler often provided an opening act for comedian George Carlin on many national tours. Almost every song he writes is at least a little funny, although some try to be minimally serious while others are just plain crazy. The live show by his current outfit, the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, are quite hilarious.

My current favorite CT song *title,* by the way, is "Village of the Darned," on last autumn's "Llama Rhymes" CD.

Robert One-Man Johnson's "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service" is a hoot. I didn't know it until just now when I looked it up but it's co-written by a long time friend of Robert's and fellow entertainer Larry Heagle. Larry's "Vasectomy" is another goodun. Bert Williams recorded "Some Little Bug" a very long time ago but it still is a fun one to sing. I'll think of more and post again later.

I was going to suggest The Arrogant Worms but someone beat me to it!   Ditto the Smothers Brothers; their stuff has held up really well.   Much of Tom Lehrer's material is also pertinent today, and let us not forget the comic repertoire of the Chad Mitchell Trio.

The most prolific source of humourous songs must be the Kipper Family and Sid Kipper
There is an immense amount of his stuff in the forum.
Another profitable source is Les Barker

I still think the Smother's Brother's weird humor is very funny - all the old folk ballads they re-did words to like "John Henry" Fox and Hen... Then their other stuff.. Map of the world, Vat of Chocolat. My 20 year old just discovered my old records and thought they were hilarious! ( odd sense of humor runs in the family perhaps)

Mark Russell, for up-to-date US commentary. Some of Loudon Wainwright is funny....but, maybe not as up to date as you would want. The guy from "Open House"---Mark???----is absolutely a gut buster....

Up to date seems the watchword here--are you looking for topical songs or sly social commentary, and it simply to listen to, or will you be performing them? And in what situation? I thought Jim Stafford did some very funny songs when I heard him on Smothers Brothers years ago. Very sharp and witty. Are any of the his words around? (Not in the DT) Don't know if he's doing any of the same stuff now (I see by my Google that he is entrenched in Branson, MO. That seems to spell a long slow decline, once you're parked there and all of middle America comes to your theater to hear your old classics. So maybe the songs I remember hearing ARE still in circulation. . .).

Tom Lehrer should enjoy a resurgence in popularity--many of his songs seem to fit with the times again.

I would look up Tom Lehrer or Shel Silverstein in Google.I assume you are playing in Britain, as you mentioned Fred Wedlock and Mike Harding. If you get really stuck, you can even PM me. I have a few songs which some people find amusing - and at least you can be certain that your audience has never heard them before!

For good Wisconsin humor that often spills to the rest of the world, try Peter and Lou Berryman. You'll find a number of their songs here at Mudcat. You can also go to Folk-Legacy Records and order the recordings of Art Thieme and Kendall Morse, two entertaining recording stars who hang out here at Mudcat.
