Although I'm not a smoker. I think the new warnings on fag packets in the UK are horendous and would like to propose some alternatives. So far I've thought of :- SMOKING - IT'S GREAT AFTER SEX ; SMOKING - IT CURES KIPPERS ; or just SMOKING ..... NICE....; PASSIVE SMOKING - I PAY FOR IT. YOU GET THE BENEFIT; SMOKING - BEST BEHIND THE BIKESHEDS
any other suggestions

Best behind the bike sheds? I can think of something that comes first, the smoking after maybe. But as the ad used to say - it's like kissing an ashtray.

"SMOKING CAN CAUSE A SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH" and "SMOKING SERIOUSLY HARMS YOU AND OTHERS AROUND YOU" all in big bold lettering - I find this a great deterant to smoking so much so that my consumption has increased -mmmmm what does that say about me then

CIGARETTES LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS - (picture of some guy coughing his lungs out)

MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO - (picture of children watching adults smoke)

EACH YEAR, THE EQUIVALENT OF A SMALL CITY DIES FROM TOBACCO USE - (graph of indoubtedly VERY well-doctored statistics)

CIGARETTES CAUSE FATAL HEART DISEASE (picture of dissected heart)

DON'T POISON ME - (picture of young boys, arms folded defiantly over their chests, staring you down. My response - okay dears, no fast food, junk food, soft drinks, candy, TV-watching or video games [mind pollution, don'tcha know!] or riding that gas-burning mini-bike either ...)

Just to give you some ideas ... misery loves company I guess!!

I also find the stark, black and white, blunt message on cigarette packets a little agressive. I don't know of any smokers who've quit because of the new regulations(myself included) but I can see an opportunity to re-market those old cigarette cases that were once so popular!

yo' daddy-you're quite right. Bundles of firewood, if improperly stored, can result in blunt force trauma, and if misused may cause burns.

I remember a few years ago someone launched a brand of ciggies called "Death" with a picture of a skull on the packet. I think they sold quite well for a time.

I think "THESE WILL MAKE YOU SMELL REVOLTING" might be as good as anything.

Sincere warnings won't work.

"Anonymous" Flaming from people you thought were friends doesn't work.

Horrid photos on cig packages won't help.

Standing outside the Toronto Cancer Centre (after having a kidney removed) and watching elderly dying cancer patients desperately sucking on a fag, while holding on to their Intra-venous "tower" with the other hand WORKS.

I'll never get that image out of my mind, and I'll never 'want' a cig again.

Heres one for all the smokers out there...my friends father died less than a year ago of lung cancer from 40 years of smoking, she then swore that she would never even touch a ciggerett and I witnessed her more than once get in an argument with a smoker.
She now smokes 3 paks a day.

Personally I strickly forbid ANYONE to smoke in my house or on my property if I can catch them. Smokers are adicted with the nastiest habit(s) known to man. Fortunately smokers in the US are on the decline due to increased prices and the cost will more than double in the next few years due to tax increases so that the tax increases can be used to give medical treatment to folks who are ill and can't breathe because of smoking. Are lessons NOT LEARNED??? Tobacco crops are on the increase because China buys all that it can. China actually encourages their people to smoke........what's up with that?

mrs h was abroad recently & brought me back some luvly 'Drum'.

on each pack its got, 'Roken is dodelijk' & 'Tabaksrook bevat benzeen, nitrosaminen, formaldehyde en waterstofcyanide'

so i guess i'll be well preserved with the formaldehyde!

EJ may have a point about China. My two uncles in Virginia raise approx. 190 acres of tobacco per year and have sold their entire crops to China for the last 4 years AND at a higher price than in the US.

I'm hooked - but I know it's not good for me. If governments raised the age at which you can buy tobacco by a year on an annual basis, smoking would disappear. I went to Hungary last year, where (I think) you have to be 18 to buy tobacco, and I was surprised at how few smokers there were, considering that cigarettes are very cheap and other Eastern/Central European countries smoke like we did in the West 30 years ago. It's only pressure from the big companies that keeps the age of consent down.

CraigS-Most smokers start well before they can legally purchase cigarettes. All raising the age would do would be to make people think the problem was going away.

I'm still trying to quit completely and am down to three cigs daily from sixty or seventy. It is an insidious disease and I believe it would be easier to quit heroin as they don't sell it at every store and gas station. I agree, the warnings only serve to increase the smoker's intake, but I'm sure they figured that equation into to the big formula as well. But check out the History of Tobacco, even if you've never smoked.

Some interesting stuff in there.

I noticed "Napoleon said to have used 7 lb. of snuff per month".

I imagine that it can't be long before snuff will be back in fashion, now that smoking in bars and such as starting to be outlawed. A much less antisocial habit, even though it can look a bit gross.
