It's not exactly lyrics, but if you will click here, it seems to be part of a play/monologue.

"Who Shot the Hole in my Sombrero"

I've been after it myself, and found out this much.

It was written in 1949 by Milton Leeds and Billy Hayes, and has been recorded by quite a few, most notably Rex Allen, one of the old singing cowboys, and narrator of countless Disney documentaries.

Disney has an an animatronic exhibit called "America Sings" where the singer is an animated dog seated on a burro. He sings a shortened version of the song, but no longer with the heavy Mexican accent he had originally. The PC folks sanitized his accent some time ago.

I have located a copy of the sheet music and will let you know when I get it, if no one finds the lyrics first.

The Indiana State University Library has a copy of the sheet music (not online unfortunately). Here is a copy of the catalog entry:
Title: Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
First Line: I saw my friend Jose along the street one day, when suddenly a pistol shot rang out
Chorus: Who shot the hole in my sombrero? Who put the bullet thru the hat?
Music by: Leeds, Milton, and Billy Hayes.
Words by: Leeds, Milton, and Billy Hayes.
    P/P/D: Hollywood : American Music Inc., c1949.
    Location: SPC, KIRK PS 1948-1951
Three recordings are currently available: by Rex Allen on "Rex Allen Sings 16 Favorites," 1961, and on "Archive Collection: 16 Golden Hits, 1998; and by Edmundo Ros and His Rumba Band on "Mambo Jambo: 1949-1950," 2001.

A couple of sound samples are available at Yahoo! Music, from which I made this incomplete transcription:
[CHORUS:] Who shot the hole in my sombrero? Who put the bullet through my hat?
Who shot the hole in my sombrero? Who would do a terrible thing like that?

Was it Mita or Lolita? Are they jealous 'cause I find new senorita?
Was it Pancho from the rancho? Did he do this because I kissed his wife?

It's better I get on my horse and gallop far away.
With bullets ev'rywhere it is not safe to stay.
Some hombre sure is mad at me, so I don't hang around.
The next hole that the bullet make, it could be lower down. CHORUS.

Does any one have any more on this song?

I found this post on a cowboy page..

Back around 1948 I had a 78 rpm recording of a gal singing a song called,"WHO SHOT THE HOLE IN MY SOMBRERO?" Of course 78's have since gone to that great gramophone in the sky and I have not been able to find any trace of that song anywhere since.
Have you heard of it or do you know anything 'bout it?
Chorus sung in a Mexican sounding accent:

Who shot de hole in my sombrero
Who put de bullet through de hat
Who shot de hole in my sombrero
Now who would do a terrible thing like that
Was it Pancho --- from the rancho ... ... etc ... etc.

Any help would be thought upon, kindly!

Transcribed from a tape made from a Mary Cliff Traditions program, sung by Rex Allen. I have some problem with his accent in the last verse:

Who shot the hole in my sombrero ?
Who put the bullet through the hat ?
Who shot the hole in my sombrero ?
Who could do a terrible thing like that ?

Was it Nita, or Lolita ?
Are they did it 'cause I find a new senorita ?
Was it Pancho, from the rancho ?
Did he do this 'cause I kiss his wife ?

I think I get my horse and gallop far away,
The bullets flying everywhere, it is not safe to stay.
Some hombre sure is mad at me so I don't hang around,
The next hole that the bullet makes, it may be farther down.

Chorus

Was it Nina, or Rosina ?
Are they mad 'cause I give all their jewels to Tina ?
Was it Chico, from Tampico ?
I sell him mine but he no find the gold.

Chorus

Was it Tony, ------ - ony ?
Is he mad because I stole his pinto pony ?
(No consider) to pull the trigger.
It was not mean for accident, I theenk.

From another site, the questionable bits in the last verse are "Was it Tony? Not too funny." and "No confusion, who pull the trigger?" As this was another transcription someone made, and I haven't heard the song, I don't vouch for the accuracy.

"Ah yes, the Dancing Water show. It's good to know someone else remembers that besides me. Sadly, many of the rides and attractions that we knew as kids are closing or are being replaced. We're getting old my friend.

Because of your name ("disneymike"), I assume you are a bit of a Disney buff? If so, you might be able to answer a question for me. About 4 years ago, I stumbled onto a website while Googling Disney attractions. On the site, they had downloadable .wav files of what sound like copies of the original Disney attraction sound tracks. The quality of these files is very good - too good to be taken by a tourist with a tape recorder. I have Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, America Sings, the Matter Horn Bobsleds, and a couple others. There is a little degradation in the sound quality, but I attribute that to file compression.

At the time, I didn't think much about it. I did have the foresight to copy everything to CD, however, and I'm glad I did because now I can't seem to find that website. Furthermore, I can't seem to find any reference to any sound tracks anywhere! Makes me wonder if these were bootleg and the site was shut down.

I did a little research and I discovered that there were actually two America Sings sound tracks. The first one was deemed too politically incorrect and was changed just prior to the release of the original sound track. Most of us remember this from the Prospector character:

(Texas accent)
Who shot that hole in my sombrero?
Who put that bullet through my hy-at?
Who shot that hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a turrible thang like thy-at?
I cain't figger
who'd pull that trigger.

You don't reckin mah wife could be back in ty-own?

But the original sound track went like this:
(Thick Mexican accent)
Who shot that hole in my sombrero?
Who put that bullet through my hat?
Who shot that hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a terrible thing like that?
Was it Pancho,
from the rancho?
Did he do this because I kissed his wife?

I went back and checked my copy. Sure enough, I have the politically incorrect, pre-released version!
Here's my question: given that I have a pre-release copy of America Sings, and also that I can no longer find these sound tracks on the internet, do you think it's possible that I have authentic copies of the attraction soundtracks? Is this a big deal, or are these available other places that I'm not aware of?
Anyway, great site! Keep up the good work!
Dave"

I have a recording of Who Shot the Hole in My Sombrero sung by Johnny Boyle. Johnny was a regular entertainer at the White Sun Guest Ranch and other venues near Palm Springs in the 1950ties and 60ties. Johnny specialized in Polynesian, Mexican, and Western cowboy songs with a few Irish ones thrown in for good measure. Much of his repertoire was "politically incorrect" by today's delicate standards and he performed this one with a Mexican accent.
I have a LP record somewhere that includes the Sombrero song but can only put my hands on a cassette copy and mp3 rips.

Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who put the bullet through the hat?
Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a terrible thing like that?

Was it Nita, or Lolita?
Are they mad because I find new senorita?
Is it Poncho, from the rancho?
Could he do this because I kiss his wife? Ha, Ha, Ha!

chorus

Was it Nita, or Lolita?
Are they mad because I give their jewels to Tina?
Is it Tico, from Tampico?
I sell him mine but he don't find the gold, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!

chorus

Was it Tony, that big phony?
Is he mad because I steal his pinto pony?
No can fi'ger, who pull 'a trigger, Ha, Ha, Ha!
It wasn't meant for accident I think...
Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a terrible thing like that?

I was stunned when I heard the version with the thick Mexican accent... it was NOT the version I fondly recalled from childhood..

My comments have nothing to do with PC or any of that. I'm just happy to have found the story behind the change. Plus it proves I'm not crazy!!

Or... does it?   LOL...

My transcription from the video at YouTube:

WHO SHOT THE HOLE IN MY SOMBRERO?
As sung by The Cowboy Way Traveling Band*

CHORUS: Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who put the bullet in my hat?
Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a terrible thing like that?

1. Was it Rita ? or Juanita?
Were they mad because I found a senorita?
Was it Pancho from the rancho?
Was he mad because he heard I kissed his wife? CHORUS

2. It might have been that old-time chicken rancher.
He caught me takin' hens' eggs from his coop.
When he fired off that twelve-gauge double-barrel,
I didn't know whether to run or just to [raspberry sound].

3. It may have been my brother or my sister.
It could have been my mama or my dad,
If they found out how I bought this sombrero.
I took all of the money that they had. CHORUS

4. Maybe it was those gringos on the border.
They fired their guns at me the other day.
The horse I rode must have looked too familiar
To those cowboys from over their Texas way.

5. It could have been those dad-burn federales.
They are the policia of the range.
They mistook me for one of those banditos
Whose ways they spend their time trying to change.

6. It prob'ly was the padre at the mission.
He shot at me last time I went to town.
He said he would shoot the next time that he saw me.
Said he can't have me a-chasin' the nuns around. CHORUS

7. Just yesterday during my noon siesta,
I woke to hear a bullet pass my head.
The only one in sight was Rex's(?) old lady.
Can't figure out why she would want me dead.

8. I guess I ain't got too much room to grumble.
I really should feel lucky 'cause instead
Of the bullet that passed on through my sombrero,
It might have stopped real sudden in my head. CHORUS

[* The guys in the video seem to be lip-synching, and therefore it's not clear to me whether they are the same guys who recorded the audio. I don't see anyone in the video playing instruments, but I hear at least 2 guitars.

[I don't have much information about the "The Cowboy Way Traveling Band" but it looks like 2 of its members are "Cowboy Bill and Wrangler Marv" who have a syndicated radio show called "The Cowboy Way Show."]

Below is my transcription from the video at YouTube:

Done with a very bad Mexican accent. Listen carefully to the words I have boldfaced. "Was" becomes "vuss." That's just wrong. It sounds more Swedish than Mexican to me. If you want to do the accent, don't learn it from Rex Allen!

WHO SHOT THE HOLE IN MY SOMBRERO?
As sung by Rex Allen & the Arizona Wranglers, 1947

CHORUS: Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who put the bullet through the hat?
Who shot the hole in my sombrero?
Who would do a terrible thing like that?

1. Was it Nita or Lolita?
Are they jealous 'cause I find new senorita?
Was it Pancho from the rancho?
Did he do this because I kiss his wife?

BRIDGE: It's better I get on my horse and gallop far away.
With bullets flyin' ev'rywhere, it isn't safe to stay.
Some hombre sure is mad at me, so I don't hang around.
The next hole that the bullet make, it could be lower down.

CHORUS.

2. Was it Nina or Rosina?
Are they mad 'cause I give all their jewels to Tina?
Was it Chico from Tampico?
I sell him mine but he no find the gold.

INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE.

CHORUS.

3. Was it Tony, that big phony?
Is he mad because I steal his pinto pony?
No can figger who pull the trigger.
It was not meant for accident, I think.

Greetings,
I am now 65 years old and the song " Who Shot The Hole In My Sombero"
Brings back beautiful memories because - when i was a child my Beloved Father (now passed away) use to play his guitar and sing it.
Daddy, always made me laugh when he sang this song because he made funny faces as he sang it - of course he did this on purpose to make me laugh. I sure do miss my father and my mother - they were wonderful parents and very good people. And, I miss hearing him and my mother sing and play instruments.

As the Song Goes - Memories Echo Through The Pages of My Mind.
Those Were The Day - In-Deed They Were.

Signed - I Love Old Songs - and - I Love My Family Too!!
