I know a 5-string banjo picker who would love to have been alive around 1910. He says that was the classic age of banjo. He does a lot of melodic stuff on the banjo I haven't heard anyone else do.

The 1960's and just at the start of the 1970's. Pop music broke out of the box for a short while. I remember how exciting it was hearing new stuff on an almost DAILY basis.

Then it stopped.

I think there can be very little doubt that the music of the 2340's on Vantic prime is the best music ever performed, of cause I'm thinking of the great masters Pywin Drasbable and Veesha Rash. Drasbables faltless rutaling on the Swainbing is just astounding in it's profound simplicity and rythmic eligance, and Veeshas mastery of the fourh Zang has to be heard to be believed.

I think that decades of music generally are defined as something to define it as something. Why, who knows. When a new decade rolls out, I think either artists or labels decide, let's change things up a bit. Then music changes. It's all just opinion. Nowadays, I think that the trip hop genre is really innovative and creative. Massive Attack, Hooverphonic, Weekend Players. All great. Anyone know WP's? (http://www.ffrr.com/artists/weekendplayers/index.mgi2) You can hear some of their studd there. It's really amazing stuff.

Decade? Decade of which century? I quite enjoy the music of the 40's--1740's, that is. Handel was busy writing his "Messiah" and good ol' Johann Sebastian Bach was well into his job as Cantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig, being cappelmeister, seeing to it that his 10 kids had a good education, groovin' with his fugue, writing his "Well-Tempered Clavier" & lots of music for the royal court. Then Martin Luther was writing some beautiful lyrics & hymns till he went to his reeward in 1546. 'Course, I liked the music of the 1940's too--I really dig that jive from Lionel Hampton! And the music of Gene Krupa really rocks--it is said that his drum solos were so beautiful they brought tears to people's eyes. Come to think of it, I enjoy beautiful music from most any era.

"Decades" are (mostly) a marketing concept used to repackage and sell music from previous eras. The so-called "fifties," "sixties," and "seventies," as well as all the others are more full of diversity than any one defining style. Time and events don't really fit into neatly packaged blocks, beginning with a given year and ending with another. Any "decade" you care to look at will contain a variety of musical styles and genres. The "sixties" were not all "peace, love, dove" any more than the seventies were all about disco. Even if you narrow the scope of your queston to a single year, you will still have a diversity of country, classical, "pop," jazz, folk, ethnic, etc. All of these forms of music and many more are, at their best, all constantly evolving and offering something different than whatever came before. When you attempt to label a group of years as a "decade," you are limiting yourself and placing a false construct on something that by nature, resists such false limitations.

I think the first decade was best. The one when music was just born. Back then everything was folk music, passed down from one person to another. Of course no one remembers that one. It must have been a magical time. There were no definitions, labels, genres, or restrictions then, describing what it was or where or to whom it could be performed. It was just mankind taking his very first steps into a larger and more fascinating world of communicating with those around him in that very special way.

I wonder what prompted it all. I tend to think it might have been our curiosity and perhaps imitation of how other creatures on the planet communicated with each other. I wonder who was the first Johnny Appleseed to have sung or whistled the recognizable pattern of tones and got this big crazy ball rolling.

I know, in the vast scheme of my puny, measly, life on the planet, what does it matter, who sang, hummed, whistled or grunted the first musical tones. It's just that, with the way we've wrenched and twisted it for decades and centuries and used it and perverted it, it would be nice to hop on a way back machine to see who if any one person started it all and how it all began. Hey, can I help it? I'm a history freak.

I think he was the best musician and composer that ever lived. And, his stuff is easy to play on a guitar.

Try "Variations on a theme in F" You don't have to play all the variations, just do the easy ones.

And you don't have to play it in "F"

I guess we can all come up with decades and reasons to justify them.

For me and just looking at the part of folk music I enjoy the most, I would suggest the 1970s. Planxty and the Bothy Band really did set standards then that I don't think have ever been bettered.

All depends which decade you are asking about, IMHO as regards folk
music I believe the sixties and early seventies produced the best
contemporary music around today, including the rubbish I wrote.
Compared to the giants of yesteryear, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms,
et al, what we created pales into insignificace, but I like it
anyway.

This is easy... the decade when you were in your teens to mid-20's. Music to wash your car by, when you're in your 50's. The only difficulty is if you spanned two decades between your teenage years and mid-twenties, then you have to choose teen-angst versus mid twenties "maturity." I'd be curious to see if anyone breaks this rule...

The other exception is if you continue to enjoy popular music beyond your twenties... I could pick the 40's (when I was not a teenager, as easily as the 80's (when I wasn't in my mid-twenties.)

You are probably right Blackcatter, but I guess you had to be there.I liked the sixties songs best of what I've heard so far. On the whole, the seventies were dire. Allen C is right in saying it doesn't matter a buggers. On the other hand, it doesn't matter a buggers whether Ruud Gullet was a better midfield player than Zico - but I have a lot of fun idly passing the day by talking about that too.

The best songs were all written by the time the 70's were half-over. Exceptions are few. The really best were written between 1890 and 1965.

This is not an opinion, but a scientific fact, bast on empirical measurment.

I don't mean to sound unfriendly or unkind; but who gives a rat's ass? What difference does my opinion (or anyone else's) make as to deciding which decade was supposedly better than another? This seems to me to be just another in a seemingly endless line of senseless opinion polls that really have no use other than as a place for a lot of people to register opinions about things of little conseqence.

If I submit my opinion, will it change yours? I doubt it. So, what's the purpose?
