Well.... you learn something every day. I spent 30-something years in Portland and didn't know that.... maybe now I can also learn where the good folk music is!

Lane
Longview, Washingon (not too far from Portland) :)

Back in the way back times, two trappers were in Oregon territory. One was from Portland Maine, the other from Boston. They gambled for the right to name the village, and the guy from Portland won.

Of course, there are many places named Portland in this country, but, that's the story I was told.

Marc-

I'm betting your best lead would be Jonathan Lay and Mary Benson, part of "Spinnaker" and several other shanty/chanty collectives; I found them very helpful last September. Jonathan may be reached at: layj@teleport.com

Good luck, and see you at Mystic!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Talk about timing. I was just informed by my wife that I'm to travel to the left side Portland for a family function, the middle of August. I'm wondering if any catters can recommend a couple places where I might be able to try and book a gig or two, to try and subsidize my trip. I do Sea Chanties, Drinking songs, Irish songs and tunes, ect... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi, folks. I've been playing hooky a bit and didn't see this thread till tonight.

Yes, the "twisted celtic/shanty group called Spinnaker" (with Jonathan Lay) still performs on Friday nights at Elephant and the Castle (and the audience gets very involved). Occasionally they have a chantey sing on Tuesday nights there in the back room, too.

There is a Sunday afternoon song circle/jam session at Yola's Foster Road Coffee House, SE 65th and Foster Road. It starts about 1-1:30 PM and goes till 3 or 4P, or even 5P, when Yola's closes. Sometimes just a handful of people, sometimes 10 or 12. (New venue; the word's just getting out.) Format depends on who shows up. Recently we've had a couple guitars, mandos, banjos, bass player, auto harp, singers, and sometimes fiddlers.

There's also a new bluegrass jam (sort of "not for prime time" group" at one of the pubs in NW PDX on Saturday afternoons, same time, roughly, as Kate's jam at Artichoke. Artichoke has the blurb on their wall.

Also there's a 3rd Sat. song circle that emphasizes '60s-'70s "folk music." They use a book they've put together, with at least 200 songs, IIRC. Potluck, group singing, etc.

A few other things going on. If you want more info, PM me your e-dress, and I'll get in touch with you re details.

Genie

Thanks for the lead, fsharpdim7 and Lane, on Artichoke. I may even take my bow with me to have it rehaired while I'm there. I'll be in Portland next weekend.

Charley, the Elephant and the Castle??? Sounds interesting......

KT- You might also check and see if anything is still happening at the Elephant and the Castle. When I was there last summer there was a twisted celtic/shanty group called Spinnaker performing.

Maybe I'll refresh my old thread.

What a great town!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

A great friend of mine is moving to Portland in September. He's an amazing slide steel guitar player - primarily delta blues. He has a series of gigs lined up when he gets out that way. He also knows some really talented folks in Portland. You can check him out and contact him at:

I expect you already know how Portland Oregon got its name?

Hey, watch it with the "Johnny come lately" remark - thats my home town you're talking about.. :)

KT - check out the Artichoke Music website: http://www.artichokemusic.com/

Some good leads there - but you didn't say which Thurs, Fri, Sat. you were coming... hope that helps - the Portland Folore Society linked above is also a good source. I think their whole calendar is on line, if not, let me know, I have a hard copy.

While I can't say that Maine is prettier than Oregon, having never been there, but, it's prettier than some places I've been. Except, Scotland, maritime Canada, northern England, Vermont. Come to think of it, there are lots of places just as pretty.

See Kate and Steve at the Artichoke
Great jam every Saturday
Artichoke Music is located at 3130A SE Hawthorne Boulevard in the "Hawthorne District" - and down the street is a branch of Powell's book store.

LOL, Kendall! I suppose so, but that's the one for this trip. Someday, I'd love to go to the one in Maine. I hear it's beautiful there.

So, where do musical Mudcatters in Portland, OR go for music on first Thursday nights? Or Fridays or Saturdays?
