I need a few songs to sing to children to let them know that they're loved and wanted. As I've added my own grandchildren, I realize that I don't really have a good song for them. It would be nice to have a few for older kids too. Just nice, sweet, feel-good songs.

What do you sing to them now? It takes a fair amount of quick thinking, but my own parents used to listen to music and morph the songs to fit the kids. It was funny, and silly, and made a lasting impression, because we still sing some of the made-up verses to each other. I think it would encourage the kids to think, and certainly challenge them a lot more than the majority of the Raffi-esque kid songs out there that say I love you.

I should add that I would use these in schools and other settings, where there are kids. These aren't just for my own children and grandchildren. When you have a class full of little doe-eyed four year-olds sitting in front of you, you want to reach-out and hug all of them with a song that lets them know how much they are loved. Something about their home and families. Maybe something about idle afternoons, playing in the yard, watching the clouds, playing with the cat, eating cookies, (My typical 54 year old day!!!), etc.

I wrote several for Barky when she was a tiny tot. I'll write more if grandkids ever come into it.

OK Catters!!! Remember, you want these kids to get images of love and security in these songs. So far, we got:

Please be like your Daddy, son.
Skinamarinck.
You are my Sunshine.
