Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Apr 03 - 07:20 PM One-legged? No way - two stumps, and undefeated. Brave Benbow Brave Benbow lost his legs by chain shot By chain shot, Brave Benbow lost his legs by chain shot. Brave Benbow lost his legs And all on his stumps he begs Fight on, my English lads 'Tis our lot, 'tis our lot. A good namesake to have. I well remember a great version of Jack Hall Steve recorded, with pretty well the same tunme as Admirall Benbow. Unlike Sam Hall, it's not bitter, just defiant. With a verse I've not heard other people sing generally: I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd, and I hollered out, right light Now Molly, ain't you proud, ain't you proud, Now Molly, ain't you proud, ain't you proud. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Apr 03 - 07:22 PM Slight (light) error there. It shopuld be: I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd, and I hollered right out loud "Now Molly, ain't you proud, ain't you proud, Now Molly, ain't you proud, ain't you proud." |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Nancy King Date: 30 Apr 03 - 08:08 PM Steve recorded "Admiral Benbow" years ago on his album of the same name. It's a terrific album, and I've been an ardent Benbow fan since I first heard it in 1963 or thereabouts. Many good wishes for a speedy recovery, Steve! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: catspaw49 Date: 01 May 03 - 06:30 AM Well my thoughts are certainly still with him! I'd hope he is out of ICU by now. Having had 3 heart surgeries I know there are levels of stepdown units and I hope Steve is on the way back to a good recovery. My candle is burning and my best thoughts are going his way. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Steve Parkes Date: 01 May 03 - 06:33 AM Just seen this thread. Like Roger, I remember Steve well from those Saturday mornings. Spike Milligan once said, "That was Steve Benbow. They tell me he's a folk singer. I wonder what he does for a living?" Give him my best wishes too -- he's largely responsible for my following in his footsteps! I'll sing Admiral B tonight fo him at Bedford, and pass on the news. It's not mentioned in the song, BTW, but Admiral B survived his op long enough to get back to port and hang the captains who "turned tail/In a fright", so there's a good precedent! Steve |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Bugsy Date: 01 May 03 - 06:44 AM I've had 6 heart procedures over the last 7 years Steve, believe me, they get easier as you go. Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: GUEST,Guest Tommy Date: 02 May 03 - 07:44 PM Hope i can be included in the "get well" list for Steve Benbow. Like a few others (few?) I have been an admirer of Steve's singing and guitar playing ever since I first bought his old LP "I Travel the World" back in 60s. Hope he is soon well again. Tommy |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 03 May 03 - 10:59 AM Tommy of course you can be. Steve needs all the prayers he can get and certainly Sandy and I appreciate the support everyone here has shown. Thank you all for the kind comments. Best wishes. Pete. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: catspaw49 Date: 03 May 03 - 01:37 PM Pete, can we get an update on his condition? We don't need to know all the details or anything, but just how things are progressing.....All my best still going his way. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 05 May 03 - 04:02 PM well, Steve is off of most of the drugs he was on. However, he picked up a lung infection that has meant he has not been brought round for his own safety. So, he is 3/4 of the way out of the woods but no way clear. The thing that has got to us all is the fact he walked into hospital a well enough man. He is the fittest person I know and at 71 that is an achievement. So it has been upsetting to see this happening. Thanks for the concern everyone. Keep praying for Steve and everything shall be o.k. On behalf of Steve's wife Sandy and myself, Once again, Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Nancy King Date: 05 May 03 - 08:03 PM Well, starting out in generally fit condition has got to be a good thing. My thoughts are still with Steve -- we'll be looking for another new recording next year... Nancy |

Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Dave Bryant Date: 06 May 03 - 06:24 AM I'm sorry but I've only just caught up with this thread - I don't really think that it should have been in BS. Pete (protege) had warned me that Steve was going in for the op, but it was being kept a bit on the quiet. Both myself and Linda are sending him all the good vibes that we can. Also please pass on our support to Sandy. I've known Steve since his "Swan and Sugarloaf (Croydon)" days, and also used to get to some of his sessions with Denny Wright at "The Fox". I can also remember my son (aged about 4) having a ride on one of Steve's donkeys - he's got quite a menagerie. Please keep us up to date on his condition as much as you can, Pete. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: GUEST,steve benbows protege Date: 06 May 03 - 06:44 AM Steve is progressing well. He is now conscious but had to have a tracheotomy to help him breath. So, we are nearly home but there is still along way to go. Prayers still are appreciated as they have been so far. It is upsetting to see such a good person/musician in a bad way. Dave how about we have a benefit gig for him somewhere over this way? Best regards. Pete. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 06 May 03 - 09:58 AM Best wishes from the other side of the world sandra |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Dave Bryant Date: 06 May 03 - 10:19 AM Hi Pete - got any suggestions for a venue ? - I think that it would probably need to be in West London. How many people would you be expecting to accommodate ? To make it worthwhile you really need a reasonable number. Mind you I'm a little chary of organising another benefit do, as the last one (Brixton Bert) was overtaken by events and had to become "a celebration of" (or wake) - mind you it was a great evening and we raised over £330. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 06 May 03 - 02:19 PM Dave not shure yet. I was going to see if you had any good suggestions of a venue. I could try the crown in st margarets. I might put the word about, ask leadfingers, talk to Sandy etc. I will keep you updated. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: catspaw49 Date: 06 May 03 - 03:01 PM HEY!! Good on y'all !!! A great idea and now bring it off! If I were in your part of the world, I'd be there. Great idea!!!!! I'll just be keeping the candle lit and some good thoughts his way...and I'll hold out a few for you guys getting something organized as well. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Hollowfox Date: 07 May 03 - 01:19 PM Good thoughts still coming from the 'fox's den as well. And there's still a candle burning (only when I'm home, though). |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Leadfingers Date: 07 May 03 - 04:14 PM If the benefit is going to happen I would like to be involved. The only problem is that I am away on the canals for a week starting Saturday,so will be out of touch Catwise. It was bad enough being Catless for the Upton weekend, but no Cat for a week is going to be difficult. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 May 03 - 08:08 AM Terry, does that mean that we can be bloody rude to you for a week and you won't be able to do a thing about it ? Seriously, though - I would think that you's need a venue capable of holding at least 100-150 to make a benefit worthwhile. Does anyone have contacts with the Brentford Art Centre place or any pubs with a large hall/function room ? |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: GUEST,steve benbows protege Date: 09 May 03 - 02:55 AM Terry, Dave, I have had it suggested by various members of "The Tap" that it might not be a good idea due to the Benbows being so feircly independent. I will enquire with Sandy but don't be amazed if the answer is no. |

Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: Steve Benbows protege Date: 11 Jun 03 - 01:24 PM An update. On the 27th Steve went back into hospital with a suspected clot on the lung. He was treated with wolferine straight away which he doesn't react to well. However, after many tests it turned out to be fluid on the lung. Steve was out of hospital on 1st(ish) of june. He is now at home recovering slowly. Can we still give good thoughts please as we had been doing so well! best regards and thanks to you all. Pete. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: SINSULL Date: 11 Jun 03 - 05:31 PM I sang "Admiral Benbow" at the Press Room last month in his honor. A valiant effort for a valiant man. I have candles burning for him and a few others. At least he is home. It is so much easier to get well at home than in a hospital where they wait for you to fall asleep so that they can stick a needle, roll you down to a test, or ask how you are doing. |
Subject: RE: Good Vibes Please for Steve Benbow From: katlaughing Date: 11 Jun 03 - 06:07 PM He's still on my list for nightly thanksgivings, too. Glad to hear he is at home. Sins is right, it's a good place to get better. Thanks for keeping us updated. kat |
