Before a man marries, one thing he should get straight:
Who is the captain, who is the first mate,
To mop standing up or to scrub on his knees,
A man's entitled to decisions like these.

CHORUS: I'm the boss. (There's no doubt of it)
I'm the boss. (And he's proud of it)
I make the decisions and mine is the final one.
Don't tell me how the dishes should be done. CHORUS

My woman and I we live in tranquillity.
Don't ask how to spell it; I'm not nobility.
I say men are smarter and my woman agrees.
What I cook for supper should be up to me. CHORUS

Take my advice, friend: stay in the driver's seat.
You give her an inch and you're doomed to defeat.
Let her know you're the boss. Man can't live on his knees.
Fold the baby's diapers any way that you please. CHORUS

We once did this at Scout trophy camp as our party piece, all the sea scouts in full uniform with added bibs and dummies which were extracat so they could sing the chorus. Brilliant! It was my late father's idea and I'm smiling at the memory. I actually sang this song a couple of weeks ago at Whitby folk festival. Strange I should find this link.

Cheers Raggy

I'M THE BOSS was written by Harlan Howard and recorded by Burl Ives, and it's on the Bear Family 5-CD set #15667 "Little Bitty Tear: The Nashville Years 1961-1965", 1994.

Here's my transcription of a sound sample from Yahoo! Music. It has a sort of calypso sound:

My woman and I we live in tranquillity.
Don't ask how to spell it. I'm not nobility.
I say men are smarter and my woman agrees.
What I cook for supper should be up to me.
(He's the boss.) There's no doubt of it.
(He's the boss.) And I'm proud of it.
I make the decisions and mine is the final one...

Ah yes! This is from a rather slyly misogynistic song that I've heard Jeff Wesley sing. I can't recall all the verses though I'm sure there is a recording somewhere, but the chorus goes like this:-

I'm the boss; there's no doubt of it,
I'm the boss, and I'm proud of it.
I make the decisions, and mine is the final word,
I don't let her tell me how the dishes should be done.
I'm the boss.

I found this one, but no mention of dishes in it.

My Dad used to sing a snippet of a song, all his songs were snippets, but it went like:

No one tells me how the dishes should be done,
I'm the boss!

Sound familiar to anybody out there? I'd like to know the rest of it.
