Subject: Lyr Req: Fish Fingering From: JB3 Date: 03 Aug 98 - 01:05 AM Just read the Hot Meat thread request (don't know that one) and it reminded me of a song I heard at a Midwest Morris Ale several years ago. It's a parody of the old whaling type songs, about the trials and tribulations of a group of hearty sailors going to sea in search of Mrs. Paul's fish fingers. I remember a line about...It took us forty days, me boys, to reach the Isle of Wight... and a bit about...The chinese take-away got there first... Cheers! June |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE FISHFINGER SONG (Miles Wootton) From: GUEST,Fantum Date: 13 Jun 07 - 08:46 AM Once again Fantum the unintentional guest strikes again Source the digitrad Good song this I trot it out when feeling folky Fantum THE FISHFINGER SONG (Miles Wootton) Come all ye jolly sail-i-ers, who sail across the sea; And listen to this story I'm about to tell to thee. Concerning them bold Fish-iar lads who sail the seas so wet; A-hunting for fish fingers, with a harpoon and a net. 'Twas in the year of '64,or was it' 63- We set sail from Basingstoke , bound for Amer-i-key. The storms they was a-ra-ji-ing, and the waves a dreadful sight; It took us forty days, me boys, to reach the Isle of Wight. Our Captain's name was Gladys, he wore a dress of red; Which might have been the reason he was not marr-i-ed. He was a gay old sea-bitch and it was his fav-our-ite joy, To take a turn around the deck with the handsome cabin boy. And then off Iceland's icy shores, a mighty shoal we spied; Of Froz-i-en Fish Fin-gi-ers, a-waiting to be fried. With our harpoons at the ready my boys, upon that shoal we burst; A-las, we was too late me lads, the Japanese had got there first. Them Nippon lads came at we, they was a terrible crew; A-brandishing tran-sis-ti-ers, and a-giving it the old Kung-Fu. We sang them a sea shan-ti-ee, but they did not want to know; And they slashed away our mizzen mast with one Karate blow. We got back to old Eng-gi-land in a twelve month and a day; It would have been much quicker, but we went the pretty way. Take warning all ye sail-i-or lads what sails the sea in ships Don't ever go fish fing-i-ering, just stick to Cod and Chips @fishing filename[ FISHFING BX apr00 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fish Fingering From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Jun 07 - 08:48 AM There is at least one other thread here at Mudcat that has a version of this song posted under the title of "Fishfingers." There are also two other unrelated "Fishfinger" songs, one by Leon Rosselson (actually titled "Whoever Invented the Fishstick") and one by John Williams. All of the songs are inspirational! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fish Fingering From: GUEST,BobL Date: 13 Jun 07 - 08:58 AM This is the version I do - bastardised from two different sources (one in DT) with some bits re-invented by mistake. The tune is "Handsome Cabin Boy". Come all ye noble mariners and hearken unto me. It is a little ditty that I would relate to ye, Concerning they bold fisherfolk who sail the seas so wet, A-hunting for fish fingers with a harpoon and a net. 'Twas in the year of 39, or p'raps it were 93, We set sail out of Basingstoke bound for Amerikee, The winds they was a rage-y-ing and the waves a fearful height, It took us forty days, me lads, to reach the Isle of Wight. Our captain's name was Gladys, and he wore a dress of red, Which may have been the reason that he was not marr-y-ed, He was a gay old sea-bitch, and it was his special joy, To take a turn around the deck with the handsome cabin boy. Two hundred miles off Iceland's shores, a mighty shoal we spied Of froz-y-en fish fingers all a-ready to be fried, We swiftly manned our longboat and upon that shoal we burst, But we were too late, the Chinese takeaway had got there first. The slant-eyed yellow heathens, they were a fearful crew, A-brandishing transistors and making with the old Kung Fu, We sang them a sea shant-y-ee but they did not want to know, And their skipper felled our mizzen mast with one karate blow. We got back home to England in a twelvemonth and a day, It would have been much quicker but we went the pretty way, No more we'll go fishfingering off Iceland's icy shore, Next year we'll hunt beefburgers on the plains of Ilkley Moor. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fish Fingering From: Schantieman Date: 14 Jun 07 - 05:43 AM Miles's version is the one I know, and since he wrote it, we might it assume it to be "correct"! However, I do modify the second verse for the benefit of northern audiences who haven't heard of Basingstoke (or possibly the Isle of Wight!) Twas in the year of '64, or was it '63? When we set sail from Skelmersdale, bound for Amerikee. The storms they were a rag-eye-ing and they did upset our plan For it took us forty days, me boys, to reach the Isle of Man. Steve |
