Old Hundredth is the tune for All People That On Earth Do Dwell, a metrical setting of Psalm 100. The Doxology is the last verse of this hymn, IIRC.

I believe "Old Hundredth" refers to the fact that this was originally a tune setting for Psalm 100 in the old Psalter.

Therefore, we should eventually have multiple doxy's. With their SOURCES and dates cited.

For example there are four Doxology in The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration Word Music, Waco, Texax, 1986.

All have the same well-known words.

1. The one in the DT, #625 TEXT: Thomas Ken, MUSIC:German Psalter, 1551, attributed to Louis Bourgenis and the notation (OLD HUNDREDTH L.M.) 4/4 time

2. The one I kown #624, same sources but 2/2 time with extended phrases.

3. #626, MUSIC: Jimmy Owens, 1972, Lexicon Music

4. #627, A Doxology Canon, MUSIC: Jimmy Owens, 1986 Word Music.

Gargoyle, the time values for Doxology (in MC MIDI's) are exactly like those from the Episcopal hymnal, 1940. I suspect you refer to the doubling of time values for the last three notes of each line. I was raised as a Baptist and joined the Episcopal church when I married. The timing of those notes threw me at first, but that's definitely the way it was shown in the hymnal.

I just thought if Pied Piper didn't have a site of his own it would be a logical way of making his ABC's available.

Thanks MMario I did know that. I think his abc bot would be more useful for the type of project that PP is talking about though. As far as I understand it, it can crawl through certain sites looking for abc files which are then indexed and added to his tunefinder database. Many of the abcs at JC are not located at his site, he retrieves them from other sites when needed.

Incedentally, we have some abc capabilities at folkinfo that may not be obvious. We can have abc(text) files containing a number of abc's, produce a listing of the titles and extract invidual abcs which can then be converted to other formats if needed. The only working example is the start of the Bronson Project but the system is designed to handle multiple abc projects.

JC's seems to be the "standard" site for tunes. did you know you can submit tunes to his collection?

PP, it would probably be most useful to the folk community in general as abc files. I can't remember how John Chambers works his abc bot (I think he needs to know the name of a site) but if it was done correctly, your collection(s) could even be searchable from his tune finder.

This collection only seems to have songs; is there any facility to submit tunes? I know that there are a lot of trad tunes on the web, but it would be nice to have a collection of the more obscure regional stuff not available from J.C's Tune finder.
I have a project at the moment sequencing Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion ( I have access to all 12 volumes) and it would be nice to port it to the cat. I can export it in abc or midi format; maybe the tune section could be in abc and midi to facilitate the greatest access.
I realise there may be space issues, but maybe the files could be zipped?

I note that the Fenians of Carhiciveen that I posted as an abc for MMario a couple of days ago is missing the source. Perhaps it would be useful for people to know some of the abc headers. In that instance I gave:

T:The Fenians of Carhirciveen
S:The Johnstons - "Ye Jacobites By Name"
Z: Jon Freeman

T: Is the title
S: Is the source I used
Z: Is a transcription note. In this case I included it to try and give an indication that it was my own attempt at transcribing from the record.

Good point, Gargoyle. we're trying to encourage people to cite their sources when they send us MIDI files. You'll note that some of the file have annotations, and some do not. We're citing the source of the tune, and not the person who posted it. We'll try to refine things as time goes along, but for now we have a lot of unattributed tunes.
If you'd like to submit a tune, contact MMario or me by e-mail or personal message, and we'll tell you how.
By the way the old Mudcat MIDI page from Alan of Australia is still available. We're gradually incorporating those tunes into our new collection.

THANK YOU - this is a wonderful addition - especially for GUESTS!

However, a couple of things:
1. Who posted the original midi? (Can it be noted with date?)
2. How can changes/corrections/comments be place BY the midi?

FOR EXAMPLE:

1. Go to Doxology
2. The notes are correct
3. The note values are wrong (nothing like the Methodist Hymnal 1955)

One of the less trumpeted features of the Mudcat Cafe. There are currently over 1200 midis posted on the page(s) many of which have been submitted to the Digital Tradition; all linked either to threads on the forum, songs in the Digital Tradition, or both.

yes - it's another place to look when you are searching - but it is another place to find answers.
