I've seen so many wrong lyrics for "The Landlord's Daughter" (from the soundtrack to "The Wicker Man"), I just had to set the record straight - especially the last verse, which nobody gets right!

Of wenches and bawdy-house queens by the score,
But I sing of the baggage that we all adore:

Although she's not the kind of girl to take home to your mother.

*There is an additional verse that didn't make it into the movie:

Her lips are as roses, her wine is a treat,
Her whiskey is good and her figger is neat,
And while she is serving her bitter, she's sweet -
The Landlord's Daughter!

**At least one person in the movie seems to sing, "When she takes off her garter it's all undone." It may just be that they have thick accents and are supposed to be very drunk in this scene!^^

My apologies for the omission - all the songs in "The Wicker Man" were either composed or arranged by Paul Giovanni. I'm afraid I don't know how to post songs to the actual DT song lyric pages...^^

*grin* you posted them in the right place; the DT isn't editable on-line. if you have a tune - and can do ABC, or NoteWorthy Composer, or Midi, or Finale Notepad, or scan sheet music and e-mail it; any of those are acceptable ways to transmit the music. ABC can be posted right into the threads.

Could you fill me in on the production date of the movie "The Wicker Man." I'm not familar with it and I'd like to credit this song more completely.

1973 the film came out...BTW if you are not aware there is a FANTASTIC new CD release of the original soundtrack from the film;s master recordings...absolutely a must-have if you like this film's music.

You can order it online from www.silvascreen.co.uk. I believe Amazon and the other usual suspects have it also...

Obviously modeled on one, c 1682, said to refer to Lady Southesk, the Mistress of the Duke of York (later King James II). It can be found in the Scarce Song 1 file at www.erols.com/olsonw. The original tune was evidently "Greensleeves". Same first line.

I was listening to the soundtrack last night and having problems figuring out that last verse. The version you get on the Silvascreen CD includes the deleted verse and is only sung by a few chaps. I think it was a demo made in order to teach the song to the folks in the pub

I used to say that this was the shortest song I ever heard and I'd do it as my last song when I'd been given the high-sign to end my set since I'd been out of time for the last half hour and the bar was closing.

It went:

If you've never been the lover of a landlady's daughter,
Then you cannot have another piece of pie.

That's the whole song----just two lines. I think I first heard a fine Chicago folksinger named Jo Mapes do it in the mid 1960s.

I compared JeffK's word to the soundtrack and they seem pretty dead on, apart from a couple of things like Kate being "pretty" rather than "wenchy". But like I said, the CD is a demo version which doubtless got adapted a little when the actors learned it

Granted, Giovanni was American, but 'Pud' isn't really part of British vernacular for the penis (although I believe I may have heard 'puds' (plural) used to refer to the testes).

I've been listening to the soundtrack album on Spotify. Here's how I understand it:

"Her whiskey is good and her figure is neat"

Americans might not be aware that in Britain, "figger" is the standard pronunciation of "figure." Americans regard "FIG-your" or "FIG-yer" as standard and "figger" as dialectical, hence the spelling.

"The parts of every gentleman do stand up at attention."

I think it's unlikely to be "pants" because Brits do not use "pants" to mean "trousers" as Americans do. In Britain, "pants" means "underpants." Therefore it wouldn't be noticeable that someone's "pants" were standing at attention unless they were sitting around with no trousers on, which is unlikely.

"Pretty Kate of The Garter and Star down in town"

Probably just a mishearing or mistyping by the original poster.

"Fat Dolly who keeps The Red Hart of renown"

The White Hart (i.e. stag, or male deer) and The Red Hart are common emblematic names for British pubs. "Renown" should not be capitalized because it is not part of the name of the pub.

"As does the part that lies between her left toe and her right toe"

"Path" is possible, but I prefer "part" for no particular reason.

For your enjoyment, here are the lyrics of the pub song from the screenplay which can be found online. I am assuming that this was before Paul Giovanni ended up with the version we see/hear in the movie. I can't find any references to it on the net. Does anyone recognize any of it?

It's all choruses.
