Subject: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics^ From: GUEST,JeffK Date: 30 Apr 03 - 03:18 PM I've seen so many wrong lyrics for "The Landlord's Daughter" (from the soundtrack to "The Wicker Man"), I just had to set the record straight - especially the last verse, which nobody gets right! The Landlord's Daughter Much has been said of the strumpets of yore, Of wenches and bawdy-house queens by the score, But I sing of the baggage that we all adore: The Landlord's Daughter!* You'll never love another, Although she's not the kind of girl to take home to your mother. Her ale it is lively and strong to the taste, It is brewed with discretion, never with haste; You can have all you like if you'll swear not to waste The Landlord's Daughter! And when her name is mentioned The puds of every gentleman do stand up at attention. Now there's Jane of The Blossom and Doll of The Crown, Wenchy Kate of The Garter and Star in town,** Fat Dorrie who keeps her Red Heart of Renown, But I'll take the Landlord's Daughter! For nothing can delight so As does the part that lies between her left toe and her right toe! *There is an additional verse that didn't make it into the movie: Her lips are as roses, her wine is a treat, Her whiskey is good and her figger is neat, And while she is serving her bitter, she's sweet - The Landlord's Daughter! **At least one person in the movie seems to sing, "When she takes off her garter it's all undone." It may just be that they have thick accents and are supposed to be very drunk in this scene!^^ |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: GUEST Date: 30 Apr 03 - 03:23 PM My apologies for the omission - all the songs in "The Wicker Man" were either composed or arranged by Paul Giovanni. I'm afraid I don't know how to post songs to the actual DT song lyric pages...^^ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: MMario Date: 30 Apr 03 - 03:30 PM *grin* you posted them in the right place; the DT isn't editable on-line. if you have a tune - and can do ABC, or NoteWorthy Composer, or Midi, or Finale Notepad, or scan sheet music and e-mail it; any of those are acceptable ways to transmit the music. ABC can be posted right into the threads. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: Charley Noble Date: 01 May 03 - 08:23 AM Jeff- Could you fill me in on the production date of the movie "The Wicker Man." I'm not familar with it and I'd like to credit this song more completely. And here's a little Music Hall ditty from my collection to brighten your day: If you've never been the lover Of the landlady's daughter Then you can't have another Piece of pie. Regards, Landlady's Daughter, not to be confused with Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: Peg Date: 01 May 03 - 05:33 PM 1973 the film came out...BTW if you are not aware there is a FANTASTIC new CD release of the original soundtrack from the film;s master recordings...absolutely a must-have if you like this film's music. You can order it online from www.silvascreen.co.uk. I believe Amazon and the other usual suspects have it also... Happy May Day Sargeant...heh heh heh peg |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: GUEST Date: 01 May 03 - 08:26 PM Obviously modeled on one, c 1682, said to refer to Lady Southesk, the Mistress of the Duke of York (later King James II). It can be found in the Scarce Song 1 file at www.erols.com/olsonw. The original tune was evidently "Greensleeves". Same first line. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: red max Date: 19 Aug 03 - 05:41 AM I was listening to the soundtrack last night and having problems figuring out that last verse. The version you get on the Silvascreen CD includes the deleted verse and is only sung by a few chaps. I think it was a demo made in order to teach the song to the folks in the pub Thanks, JeffK. I trust your source is reliable for this? A truly wonderful soundtrack to an excellent film |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: Art Thieme Date: 21 Aug 03 - 12:25 AM I used to say that this was the shortest song I ever heard and I'd do it as my last song when I'd been given the high-sign to end my set since I'd been out of time for the last half hour and the bar was closing. It went: If you've never been the lover of a landlady's daughter, Then you cannot have another piece of pie. That's the whole song----just two lines. I think I first heard a fine Chicago folksinger named Jo Mapes do it in the mid 1960s. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 21 Aug 03 - 10:32 AM Ah now this thread reminds me of "The Widow who keeps the 'Cock Inn'" which I can't put my hand for the moment, if you'll pardon the expression... Didn't see it in DT... Robin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter - Correct Lyrics From: red max Date: 22 Aug 03 - 05:19 AM I compared JeffK's word to the soundtrack and they seem pretty dead on, apart from a couple of things like Kate being "pretty" rather than "wenchy". But like I said, the CD is a demo version which doubtless got adapted a little when the actors learned it |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter From: oldhippie Date: 16 Dec 09 - 07:16 PM Any connection between this and "The Highwayman", which also refers to a landlord's daughter? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Dec 09 - 10:05 PM Thanks for correcting the lyrics. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: GUEST,Rob Langley Date: 25 Feb 13 - 02:33 PM It always sounded to me like And when her name is mentioned The *pants* of every gentleman Do stand up at attention and Oh, nothing can delight so As does the *path* that lies between Her left toe And her right toe Granted, Giovanni was American, but 'Pud' isn't really part of British vernacular for the penis (although I believe I may have heard 'puds' (plural) used to refer to the testes). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: GUEST,Rob Langley Date: 25 Feb 13 - 02:41 PM Also, what is 'figger'? I've never heard the term before. At first I thought it was a drink of some kind, but Googling brings up nothing. Should it be 'figure'? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: Artful Codger Date: 25 Feb 13 - 04:24 PM I figger it should be. It's a common dialectic spelling of "figure". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: GUEST,kenny Date: 11 Jun 13 - 01:14 PM I always thought it was "parts of every gentleman". And how does one ever end this song? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Jun 13 - 06:06 PM I've been listening to the soundtrack album on Spotify. Here's how I understand it: "Her whiskey is good and her figure is neat" Americans might not be aware that in Britain, "figger" is the standard pronunciation of "figure." Americans regard "FIG-your" or "FIG-yer" as standard and "figger" as dialectical, hence the spelling. "The parts of every gentleman do stand up at attention." I think it's unlikely to be "pants" because Brits do not use "pants" to mean "trousers" as Americans do. In Britain, "pants" means "underpants." Therefore it wouldn't be noticeable that someone's "pants" were standing at attention unless they were sitting around with no trousers on, which is unlikely. "Pretty Kate of The Garter and Star down in town" Probably just a mishearing or mistyping by the original poster. "Fat Dolly who keeps The Red Hart of renown" The White Hart (i.e. stag, or male deer) and The Red Hart are common emblematic names for British pubs. "Renown" should not be capitalized because it is not part of the name of the pub. "As does the part that lies between her left toe and her right toe" "Path" is possible, but I prefer "part" for no particular reason. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Landlord's Daughter (Paul Giovanni) From: GUEST Date: 05 Jun 17 - 03:44 PM For your enjoyment, here are the lyrics of the pub song from the screenplay which can be found online. I am assuming that this was before Paul Giovanni ended up with the version we see/hear in the movie. I can't find any references to it on the net. Does anyone recognize any of it? It's all choruses. CHORUS A land lord had one daughter And a nice young girl too she was Above her garters I dare not go I being a stranger I fell in danger For doing so, for doing so. CHORUS I sowed some seed, all in some grove All in some grove, there grows no green Now for to repeat I could not stir I being a stranger, I fell in danger For doing so, for doing so. CHORUS When nine long months was gone and past This pretty girl had a fine son at last Now she must keep it and call it her own And reap the seed that I have sown For doing so, for doing so. |
