I would very much like to have the (sheet)music of Alasdair Fraser's album: the legacy of the scottish fidler vol 1. Great music. Does anyone know if this is available.

You could try writing c/o Culburnie Records at ukinfo@culburnie.com

Or try his website, www.alasdairfraser.com

In addition to the above email address, both sites have one of those online contact forms which leave room for comments and questions.

I have the brilliant "Legacy" album too, and can tell you that most of the tracks on it are traditional Scottish tunes which can be found in many of the well-known trad fiddle books & collections such as Kerr's and Hunter's and Gow. Your best bet is probably to get ahold of some of these and search out the individual tunes by title index. You're bound to find a whole hoard of other treasures as well. Best of luck -

Bonnie (ardent Fraser fan)

He lives somewhere here in the Sierra Nevada foothills - Nevada City, California, I think - and he often shows up at things that happen around the area. He played on the steps of the state capitol building during our peace march there on February 15. I also saw him perform with our own Seamus Kennedy at the Sacramento Scottish Games a couple of year ago. It's always a pleasure to hear him perform.

Loon Mountain NH Highland games this past fall, I took a two hour "class" with him. He was wonderful and very pesonable.. also left handed but he plays right handed so he stood in front of me playing left handed and watched. I was a tad intimidated to say the least but I learned so much.
Many of the songs on his albums are traditional old scottish tunes you can find in books but he showed us and taught the difference between playing songs and playing CELTIC songs. It was fascinating.

You can also get the sheet music to many of these tunes by joining the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers Club. Alasdair founded it and is the musical director. If you're in the SF Bay Area the monthly meetings are a chance to make good music with some wonderful folks. But even if you're not local, one of the perqs of being in the club is the monthly newsletter, which includes the "tunes of the month."

Members can buy a collection of the tunes of the month all the way back into the 80's. Many of the tunes you'll hear on Alasdair's recordings are included in this collection.

Years ago Chanteyranger dragged me to my first meeting of SFSF, which was when I first met Alasdair. I was hooked immediately. This is a wonderful non-profit organization, filled with many talented musicians and some of the most warm and welcoming folks you'll ever meet.

Your membership supports their mission of keeping this music alive in the tradition of learning tunes together by ear, and bringing them to the public in community concerts and international tours. Generations of kids have grown up in the company of these dear folks, and have gone on to wonderful musical careers in their own right.

Alasdair will be performing in concert with the Scottish Fiddle Club
in their annual spring concert series at the following locations...

Friday May 2 (2003), 8 pm
Ohlone College,
Fremont, CA

Saturday, May 3rd (2003), 7:30 pm
Veteran's Hall
Grass Valley, CA

Sunday, May 4th (2003), 3 pm
Palace of Fine Arts
San Francisco, CA

....and just one more little piece of the commercial...

Alasdair will perform at the Hyde St. Festival in San Francisco this Sat. May 3rd (along with El Swanno of Oak Ash & Thorn and our own dear Chanteyranger.) If you can make it down there, come find me!

The web address for the Fiddle Club is www.sfscottishfiddlers.org

cheers,
pj

I met Alasdair this weekend, and in fact played a bit with him on-stage at the Texas Scottish festival. He and Natalie, on cello were wonderful. What a treat. I was perfoming on his stage, he and Alex Beaton (another Scottish wonder) were booked mainly on that stage - I opened and closed the stage (new guy to festival, gets the time slots no one else wants)! But it was a great festival, and I enjoyed Alex and Alasdair very much.

I also got a chance to visit with Ed Miller and John taylor. We missed Brian McNeill this (vis problem kept him out). It was a wonderful event. Kinda makes ya want to drink Scotch Whiskey and play a couple of reels!

I was so impressed with Alasdair's ability to keep several hundred people on the edge of their seats with a thread of tunes, fast and slow, loud and so quiet you're not even sure he playing ... and Natalie manage to compliment his stream of consciousness beautifully. It was magic. I am already looking forward to the next time our paths cross.

You might try JC's Tunefinder if you have titles. Yes, I'm another fan of Alsaldairs; didn't realize he lives in Nevada. Often a judge at the fiddle contest for Highland Games in Estes Park, Colorado. Nice fella.

Yes, Sorcha, get that straight. Gold Rush towns have confusing names. Nevada City is in my area of California, and so are Iowa Hill and Michigan Bar. Virginia City is in Nevada.
