I have a Kiwi mate staying with me who wants to get the lyrics of a song called 'Invercargill' sang by, but maybe not written by Mike Harding of New Zealand. Can anyone help?

Been looking but it doesn't seem to be on the 'net.

Hopefully one of the people from that area of the world will see this query.

Almost, but not quite:

The song is called "South(The Bluff)" and it's on Mike's album "From the Edge" on Cityfolk. CFR018. As your mate will know, Bluff is about 15Km south of Invercargill, it's literary the end of the road. Next stop is Antarctica.

Where the highway runs out at the end of the map
Glowing skys when the twilight is long to the south and the west
Where the pace was once set Getting slower with those golden days gone.

Is that the one?

David

Not my style so I didn't have it on my database. It's on Mike's "One For You" cassette available from New Zealand "Replay Radio'

INVERCARGILL by Wayne Gillespie

That's right, there's a car for sale
It's in good condition and motor is running
It was my wife's before she went away
She went to live in Invercargill

It's got everything you could ever need
It's got bucket seats and the tyres they're radial
Never said a word, I never thought she'd leave
I just found a note on the kitchen table

Don't really know what I can say
The engine's small but it's got tons of power
I know that we will never be the same
Once we could do a hundred miles an hour

Starts well on a winter's day
Seats look like leather but they're only vynil
She come home an see the kids in May
But soon went back to Invercargill

Did everything I could to make her stay
I even got a warrant of fitness
It's been a year now since she went away
She wouldn't even come home for Christmas

That's right there's a car for sale
It's got a little rust but it's really not too bad
Every day I check the mail
But it takes a long time from Invercargill

Cheers, Jack

Wayne Gillespie here the writer of Invercargill (a song about a man who mistook his wife for a car and so she left him to live in....Invercargill at the southern tip of New Zealand)

it is also available on my album 2nd album New Locations produced by Fairport Convention's Trevor Lucas in 1986.Released by CBS (NZ & Australia)

see www.waynegillepsie.com for details and online store.

My version has an extra 3rd verse written following a suggestion by producer Trevor Lucas that the song needed a a verse about the seller of the car drowning his sorrows;
so my version is
    INVERCARGILL
    (Wayne Gillespie)

    That's right, there's a car for sale
It's in good condition and motor is running
It was my wife's before she went away
She went to live in Invercargill

It's got everything you could ever need
It's got bucket seats and the tyres they're radial
She never said a word, I never thought she'd leave
I just found a note on the kitchen table

    (added verse):
Come around we could have a drink
I don't live far from the local
It really must be sold this week
Up to now I gues I was hopefull.

Don't really know what I can say
The engine's small but it's got tons of power
I know that we will never be the same
Once we could do a hundred miles an hour

Starts well on a winter's day
Seats look like leather but they're only vinyl
She come home an see the kids in May
But she soon went back to Invercargill

Did everything I could to make her stay
I even got her a warrant of fitness
It's been a year now since she went away
She wouldn't even come home for Christmas

    That's right there's a car for sale
It's got a little rust but it's really not too bad
Every day you know I check the mail
But it takes a long time to get get here ....from Invercargill

Cheers

Good One!

But can we also have the words to "South (The Bluff)" by Mike Harding???

My ancestral rellies left Melbourne in the 1800s for Invercargill - I'd like to try and understand the attraction of a place with (almost) Antarctic weather patterns!!!

Cheers! R-J
