The issue here is manifold.

First of all, it is incorrect to say that this woman's case will be heard by the supreme court on June 3. In fact, it will be heard by the State Court of Appeals on June 3. If that fails, Nigeria has a Federal court of appeals and finally the Supreme Court. Each court is progressively less influenced by the fundamentalist interpretations of Islam, so her sentence is unlikely to be upheld by the Supreme Court. In fact, in these stoning cases where women's rights advocacy groups get involved, no case has made it past the state courts.

Second, letter-writing campaigns in Nigeria have backfired because local jailers don't give a flying f*ck what you and I think; indeed, they think we are infidels and thus lower than the gum on Satan's shoe. One bastard illegally carried out a flogging sentence which was under appeal, specifically to defy foreign letter-writers like us. So I think the best thing to do on this is to wait until her sentence is ACTUALLY upheld by the supreme court (which in all probability, will not happen anyway). At that point, the lady will have nothing to lose if someone decides to stone her just to spite us, so our letters won't backfire..

Bobert anti-abortion? I musta mist something, but I didn't see it in his post. Furthermore, it would be supremely out of character with his other positions, and IMHO would disqualify him as a candidate should he ever decide to run.

I have written and am sending my own snail mail to several principles in the Nigerian government. For any activists who note these things, when receivers of communication are considering various issues, an e-mail has less value than a phone call, has less value than a snail letter, has less value than a personal visit. This has to do with how much time and expense it takes someone to share their sentiments, and how much it is perceived that their energy represents in terms of those who did not record their sentiments. Hence, e-mail *does* have value, and is a worthy gesture. But if you have a little time and the energy, a snail means more. Just letting the group know.

Fast Forward, USA, 2012:

Grand River, Iowa. Nov. 15., Michelle Edwards, aged 24, has been found guilty of of soliciting an abortionist to abort a pregrancy resulting from a forceable rape by her estranged husband, Sgt. Robert Edwards, who has been recently hospiatized in the Suiox City V.A. hospital with sypmtoms of Gulf War II Syndrome.

Ms. Ewards will sentenced on January 23, 2013. The penalities range from 20 years in prison to life in prison.

Mr. Edwards will soon be released from the V.A. hosptal and return to his job as a plant forman at Deaver's Metal Plant just outside of Suiox City.

It's even more important, in my opinion, to put the pressure on the Nigerian Government before the Appeal goes ahead, so that we can try to influence the outcome. It would be a lot harder after the decision has been made in the Appeal.

Thanks for your input McGrath. I was acting on information that I received but I agree that it's important we get facts absoloutly correct.
As you say it's still an appalling situation and I urge all mudcatters to peruse and sign this petition.

This is incorrect. We've had this misunderstanding on a thread here already.

The Nigerian Supreme Court has not considered the case yet - the hearing had been set for March, but was postponed because of a General Election in Nigeria. The June 3rd date is the date at which the Supreme Court is to hear the case. Some people have misunderstood this, hence the email and other emails.

This doesn't mean it isn't an appalling case, and one where people should be active in protesting. But it's best to get the facts correct.
