Favorite song about love other than romantic love. Two recent threads suggested it. As I've mentioned before, the Juniper Tree is a favorite of mine, in which a sister puts a brave face on her feelings of loss when her sister marries. Comes out a little odd when a guy sings it, but so what.

Natalie Merchant had a song called You'll Never Know, credited to her and the remainder of maniacs, in which the singer seems both relieved and disappointed in herself that she hasn't lived up to what a lost childhood friend would've expected.

Some others?

I led a workshop at a folk festival once that I titled Love Without Romance. Everybody thought it was a politer title than Motel love. It took a little explaining, but there are endless possibilities. Old Blue is certainly a love song... even a song about your first car
And one of the largest bodies of love songs ever written are hymns and gospel songs.Maybe you could call them "Love Above The Waist" songs.. :-)

"Harrison Ford -- The Only Living Movie Star I ever Adored" by Christine Lavin, is about fixation rather than romance. Dunno if that counts. This is an ambiguous category -- are you counting "Old Shep" and "Myt Old Kentucky Home" in there-- full of love but no gender? "Gimme that Rock 'n Roll Music" is a candidate.

Memphis Tennessee by Chuck Berry is a very moving love song. It is written from the point of view of a man just out of jail who wants to see his six year old daughter.

One of my favorite love songs addressed to friends is "Farewell! But whenever you welcome the hour" by Thomas Moore. The song almost always brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

Lesley Nelson-Burns has an arangement of the song at her Contemplator's site here, but her version is a little to uptempo and ornate for my tastes...

Jon Anderson, My Jo    Love, certainly, but the romance part has long parted.

Amos, I guess it is ambiguous, so I guess I'd count everything someone else would count. CapriUni's recent song started me thinking about it. So many of these I don't know, I feel ignorant.

I think the song is called "Only A Dream" by Mary Chapin Carpenter, about her love for her brother, or at least an invocation of their life as children together. Really a beautiful song. yours, Peter T.

"Love without romance" could mean idealistic platonic love, as most posters have interpreted it, but one person mentioned "motel love," another category entirely.

How 'bout this country-rock semi-hit from a few years back? I can't remember who recorded it, but do remember the title plus one line of lyrics that preceded it:

"I've never done this kind of thing before, have you?
Third Rate Romance, Low Rent Rendezvous."

I nominate "Caledonia" by Dougie Maclean.

"Third Rate Romance" was done by Sammy Kershaw, but was a cover of the original sung by The Amazing Rhythm Aces. Funny song though.

Matt R:

That's the Scottish love-of-country "Caledonia," right? I first thought you were citing the "what makes your big head so hard" Louis Jordan tune (which is a very unromantic love song in its own right).

I knew the Amazing Rhythm Aces original, missed the Sammy Kershaw cover of "Third Rate Romance."

I have the Amazing Rhythm Aces' tape somewhere around here.

There's one Nanci Griffith sings that goes "There's a light beyond these woods, Mary Margaret" - love that song. It's about a friendship that lasts through the years.

First Man You Remember - from Aspects of Love. I think of this as a father singing to his daughter.

I want to be
The first man you remember,
I want to be
The last man you forget.
I want to be
The one you always turn to,
I want to be
The one you won't regret.
May I be first
To say you look delightful?
May I be first
To dance you round the floor?
The very first
To see your face by moonlight?
The very first
To walk you to your door?

"You Gave Me a Song" by Alice Gerrard. It is about love of parents and family, as I recall. Haven't heard it for a long time, and couldn't find the lyrics through Google.

Also, Allan C's "We'll Meet Again." If I remember correctly it was a gathering of mudcatter's that inspired him to write that song. We sang it as a duet to close out the last night's open mic concert at the 2002 Getaway.   You can find it at whatever the link is to the lyrics (don't know about MIdIs) of songs by mudcatters.

"The Moon Is Still over Her Shoulder," written by Hugh Prestwood, tells of an old man in love with his wife. Michael Johnson had the recording. It's . . . perfect.
