I dunno. I'm going to Bozeman and won't be back until Sunday. How about the level of intelligence of MOABites v. the denizens of CERN or the Lawrence Livermore lab? Here's something to thing about:

MOABites have never, as far as I know:

* tried to create a black hole;
* lab tested nuclear weapons;
* field tested nuclear weapons (although, years ago, if I could have gotten enough fissionable material...);
* created the WWW;
* been knighted (benighted, perhaps);
* lab-tested cold fusion;
* lab-test hot fusion.

I personally HAVE field tested various home-made rocket fuels, pyrotechnics, and engaged in chemical experiments that could clear everyone out of a building because of the odor. But that was long, long, long ago and I haven't done anything like those in, oh, three or four weeks at least.

Naw, you just content yourself with having the whole roof torn off of the buildings you inhabit.

Freds, what's the problem? You want to hava nagila?

I still have some left-over breath mints from my last experiment with fissionable fizzy drinks. (Google "Mentos and Pepsicola").

But Rapaire, I believe that the reason we have not reached heights of renown OR heights of criminal stupidity is that while brilliant, all MOABITES except freds are generalists.

Question: "How many ADA kids does it take to change a light bulb?"
Answer: "...Wanna go ride bikes?"

I have tried. I really have. I know I have given Rapaire grief, but he's me bruvver and it was all in fun. I have lifted and toted and strained my brain and quads raising Mom up when she fell low.

But now I am away for the weekend, to stay in a large grand hotel even here in San Diego, just to celebrate BBW's birthday. Which is tomorrow.

So, Mom, I ask that you stay up by drawing on other talents, and I will return on Sunday night.

Adieu, chére Maman de Tout Merde.

talent can be construed as a left-over meat loaf.

We need to celebrate Moonglow's birthday also, but I won't be abandoning you for any fancy-schmancy hotel, MOM. We're waiting until next weekend and then we'll do something to celebrate my birthday as well (she was born exactly one week ahead of mine. I almost used the pronoun "me," but then that would imply that my daughter was born a week before my birth. A tough thing to do, under any circumstances.)

Hi, Mom!

Ernesto is coming to visit!

Yes. it's true! Current path predictions for Tropical Storm soon-to-be-Hurricane Ernesto have the bullseye painted squarely upon the roof of my house!

But that's okay 'cause the bullseye was on Galveston Bay yesterday and it'll probably be shifted even further east tomorrow. Gonna be awful wet and windy someplace about a week from now, just dunno where yet.

Don't you have any ancient trees or old sheds you want removed or rearranged on your lot? Maybe another hurricane would be useful for a little housekeeping about now?

Ernesto is a hurricane now. Maybe it will be a really odd one and will cross over Mexico and up the Gulf just to nail Amos this year. Wouldn't that be a surprise!

As predicted, Ernesto's bullseye has been moved eastward. Now, instead of being on my house it's on my stepson's house in Tampa.

Maybe he'll get to see if those expensive hurricane shutter thingies he had installed on his McMansion a couple of years ago really work.

Hi, Mom.

I'm back.

The Marriott is very stylish, a bit sterile. The roof lounge crawls with 20-spomethings craving to look hip ion the evenings. The few from the roof is magnificent. The GasLamp District is beautiful, rich with excellent food and fine entertainment. We saw a comedy and drank Guinness in an Irish Pub with a real shit-kicking Irish group called the Whooligans. Catch them if you can -- they operate out of Long Beach CA. We had a lovely time and I am glad to be home.

I hear thunder! Now cross your fingers that I hear rain on the roof! (Too bad I'll have to get out and drive in it, to take Moonglow back to campus this evening. Classes start tomorrow morning.)

I just fried a friend's web pages. He is going to go ballistic until they're replaced. Arrgghhh! Darned technology. A little FTP program did a Put to a site it has never before visited and in fact was not supposed to "put" to. Who knows what is there now, but I can't log onto it. Bummer. I wrote to the tech guys, they should have a backup in place in the morning.

Tomorrow is the first day of the semester. It's bound to be busy. So if I have to take a day off to replace web pages, I'll be real busy, but I can do it. (I have them backed up in my computer, so it won't be too difficult, except I hate the design he is using now so should redo it).

Mom, just let the rain fall on us, please. I'm sure that will help a lot! Crankiness will evaporate as the precipitation precipitates.

Ms Moonglow is duly delivered to campus for the start of school tomorrow. She panicked a little and called me (I was 10 minutes from my house) and asked where I was. Turned out she thought she'd left a textbook in my pickup truck, but I'd seen her put it in a box and told her where it was. Disaster averted! I gave her two last words of advice on the way up. "Pace yourself."

Hi, Mom. Welcome back. I've returned from Bozeman. Pat went to a quilt show and quilt stores and I bought books. I bought two books about prostitutes in The West and a book about forensic studies on the men who died with Custer and all kinds of neat-o stuff. Then YESTEDAY we drove down to Yellowstone Park and entered via Gardiner and the Roosevelt Arch and drove through YNP and Grand Tetons NP and ate in Jackson Hole at Bubba's barbeque place and drove home through Alpine and Soda Springs. The moon was just a hairline crescent and when it set around 9 p.m. it was coppery-red from the smoke from all the fires. And Mom, you know what? I bought another cap. Yes, I know, but this one is for

                               MOOSE DROOL!!

So how many caps does that make? I have quite a few here myself, but they're from the university(s), the power company, the local newspaper, and a handful of painter hats from Home Depot. They don't really count, because I don't wear painter hats when I walk the dogs or run to Home Depot (go figure!). Several of them hang over the knob on a rail in the kitchen. I didn't wear one this morning because it wasn't bright, it was dark and ominously cloudy and guess what--it's raining right now! Whoo hooo! We haven't had rain since July 4.

Just don't resort to all caps, you two. Keep a couple of Stetsons, fedoras, homburgs, or other kinds of headwear available.

You may ask why? The answer is simple. All caps is considered rude in the internet age, the equivalent of shouting at another. Don't ask me why -- de gustibus non disputandum and all that. But, when in Transylvania, do as the Transylvanians do.

Amos, I much prefer "When in Rome, shoot Roman candles."

Let's see.

Caps: Goex Black Rifle Powder, USS Nautilus, USS Wasp, Doellman Gunsmithing (2 -- one old, one new), "Reel men play with their flies," "Bite Me", Alaska Marine Highway, a plain off-white one, Hidden Face Moon design (NW Coast), Craters of the Moon, New Bedford, Eagle (NW Coast Design), Salmon (NW Coast design), "Spawn 'til you die", Moose Drool, MPL logo, and soon, one with our MPL brand on it. That's all the caps I can remember right now. There may be more. And, of course, my new Moose Drool.

Hats: a black crusher like Bobert sometimes wears that I think I've lost, a brown fedora-style crusher, a tan canvas one, a quilted tan one with snapped-up brim edges, a flat-crowned black felt for re-enacting, a plain black felt tricorn, 2 straw fedodas, and an NZ "Clancy" style. That I remember.

I don't collect them, they just sort of show up.

My main hat squeeze is a Tilley, of the kind that has been three times through an elephant. True story.

The company was so impressed with the story, when they learned about it, that they wrote to the owner, an animal keeper, offerting a brand new one if they could have the historical elepahnt-thrice hat for their historical colelction of Tilleys. He declined, understandably. Having gone to so much trouble to recover and recondition it, three times, he was not about to part with it just for their convenience. And they understood completely.

BEIJING (AP) -- A woman in Hohhot, the capital of north China's Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.

No injuries were reported although both vehicles were slightly damaged, it said.

The woman, identified only be her surname, Li, said her dog "was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive," according to Xinhua.

"She thought she would let the dog 'have a try' while she operated the accelerator and brake," the report said. "They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car."

Xinhua did not say what kind of dog or vehicles were involved but Li paid for repairs.

I guess you really can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I'm back. I've been down to Essex again. I have many silly hats, but no useful dog related sayings.....

My list of annoying things for the week is:

The dog not being any good as a sheep dog.
The sheep figuring out how to get through the Electric fence.
The Sixth coat of white paint still not covering the old stuff up.
Being Ill.
And the friendly individual who made the whole carrige stink of Cannibis for 6 hours.

The "Gunfight at the OK Corral" should have been called "The Gunfight in the Vacant Lot By Fly's Photography Studio" but it wouldn't have had the same panache. There is no recod that I can find of what sort of fly it was and why it owned a photography studio.

I did not say you were sophomoric. You're not, are you? I mean, you don't do things like glibly coming up with random couplets and pretending they are quotations from someone famous, or coming up with quotations and letting people think they are your own, or stuff like that? THAT would be sophomoric.
