Amos, I could have said best original poet, and that's correct also. But then Rapaire would have thought I was subtly praising plagiarism.

Well, Ms Eiseley, although the referent is obscure, the sentiment doth warm the heart, and so many thanks!

Woe, the low-fallen arcg of Mom!
Now unfleet of lowered foot, stumbling
Down and down
To the sense of sin's center. How
Can this be so?
Is she not Mom??

Geez, Amos, gimme a break. I'm in a motel in Hot Springs, SD, in the Paha Sopa.

MOM was fine. I think she understands that there is no bungee jumping from the porch into the abyss of the space below the line. The drop isn't enough, she'd just hit the dirt with her face.

You know, I'm sort of tired of her naked bungee jumping. The neighbors have complained, you know, but not too much.

They're partial to integrated oscillatory patterns. It makes them feel very special.

I think Rapaire means the Paha Sapa: The Black Hills (Pahá Sápa in Lakota, Moˀȯhta-voˀhonáaeva in Cheyenne) are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, USA. ...

His policy of Tantalus obscurus absurdum (teasing people by being ridiculously hard to understand) only grows doubly noisome when compounded by misspellings. Paha Sopa is a Mexican breakfast soup containing shaved espadrilles, not at all what he meant.

Here's a nifty science project for our MOAB nerds:

Dave's Laminar Water Jet project.

That is an impressive piece of home engineering! Wish he sold blueprints!

SRS... engineering can be beautiful too. I wonder what art could be produced by introducing cavitation at the valve although that might mess up the light transmission downstream of the valve. Be neat to try it. I wonder if a modified needle valve could be used offset from the centroid of the flow to achieve such cavitation... perhaps a concentric set of needles allowing laminar flow at the centre and at the circumference. Hmmmm... lots of problems with that, but it would be worth a shot.

An ultrasound emitter at the valve would induce nano-scale cavitation and femto-second bursts of coherent light, known as sonoluminescence. Might be worth exploring.

I just found a genuine HD channel on my new TV. My gawd!! I could count the wrinkles in the batter's elbow!! Why I would want to do so is beyond me, but being able to is a hoot.

Amos, when you pick me up for Getaway, reflect upon Amos 12:4. Is it obscure to give something the name given it by the people who were there first?

Was there a big number? I rarely notice any more. Sorry, Eiseley. The competition was slim.   :)

Amos, did you only now get an HD TV? Isn't it amazing? I bought one during the summer (I thought I was the last one in the US to get one), and I'm tempted to start watching sports programs just because they look so amazing. :)   (Not really. . . )

Oh, well. At least I'm not fooling with a "smart phone."

What version of the Bible are you using, Rapaire? Somewhere you've added at least three chapters to the book of Amos.

I've got absolutely nothing to add to this thread that could be considered witty, enlightening or thought provoking but, having seen this monster-thread grow over the years, I thought I should perhaps add yet another number to this unwieldly beast!

Erm... that's all I have to say....

Again with the wild referents, Rapaire!

Amos, Book 4:

12 "Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,
and because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel."

13 He who forms the mountains,
       creates the wind,
and reveals his thoughts to man,
he who turns dawn to darkness,
and treads the high places of the earth?
the LORD God Almighty is his name.

Note that Rapaire is not even mentioned in there.

As for honoring the name of the place with its original name, that's a fine and high-minded justification, but it is equally true that you are being obscure intentionally under the guise of that excuse. This makes you look knowledgeable and wise, I suppose, or at least rude.

Have you considered putting in raised beds and domesticating your crop of wild referents?

No, but speaking in tongues is obscure, for sure, to them as dunno 'em; and calling a mountain after the name of huarache soup is really misleading...

Why doesn't one of you run up to Orilla and pick up Little Hawk and take him along to the Getaway? I doubt anyone has a vehicle large enough for the rest of the Orilla residents who inhabit space at Mudcat, but I suspect you'd all enjoy meeting the primordial source of Chongo, Shane, etc.

Hey, you'd be travelling through family territory! My Dad's family had a house in Salladasburg, near Williamsport. It's beautiful around there.

So make Chongo ride on the roof. Or in the trunk. Enjoy the view, and about now you should be getting into some lovely fall colors.

YEah. With three days to use, I should spend two of them driving up to Orillia to pick up Chongo? Nahhhh. I pass. I'd love to see LH at the Getaway, though!! But he has to come because he wants to make the scene, man.

Make the scene? Shakespeare, Clifford Odetts, Pirandello? Brecht, Jonson, Greene, Marlowe, Moliere, Sophocles, Sartre, Williams? One of the Russians, perhaps? I think LH would make a very good scene.

Or do you mean "make the scene" as in throwing a tantrum in a grocery store?

Why does our Retired Librarian go to such lengths to disavow any recognition of beat-era language? Could it be his Inner Bohemian trying to get out. Someone should lay a bongo on that cat, man, and see what kind of lick he can lay down when he really gets the groove.

What in the world???????

When I hit "submit" on that last post, a tiny little picture of some man momentarily appeared in the middle of the screen. It was about the size of a medium-sized postage stamp and it was there for a second, then the page refreshed and it was gone. It was like a little "pop-up", but I have never seen this happen before while on Mudcat.

I'm going to send THIS post now, and see if it happens again...

It did happen again. Just for a second or two. It looks like a little box for starting up a video, and there's some guy in a suit in the picture, but I'm not sure who he is.

Weird.
