We've gone from ice to mud. Mud after ice isn't like mud after a summer rain, it's a sticky insidious variety.

Don't call him Shirley. He's heavily armed and I hear he's not that bad a shot.

From Rap:

"Out here every public building has a spiral stairway enclosed in a tower high enough that the staircase could be used in a snowfall at least 3,810 cms. higher than the building."

3,810 CMS ??

That's just over 38 metres in my language!!

Shom mishtake shirley!

Of course when the going gets really tough we have to call out the motorized equipment to help us get back to normal operations. But that's winter for you...

Here I am, looking at last year's snow melting away. A few days later the golf course was open for play.

Oh... fact of the matter is, the deepest snow is up where they don't shovel snow. Snow is only a problem if you make it a problem.

Still, as I age, I simply don't like it anymore. And it ain't got nothin to do with how much if it's not over 5cm at a time... once a week. That looks pretty. Seasonal. Festive almost. But if the 1992 storm comes again (1.61m), I am seriously readin up on ObamaCare.

Don't care fer fluffies no more. And this wasn't a real Nor'Easter.

I've seen guys stand on top of street lamps, even on top of buildings. All you need is a ladder or a lift or some scaffolding. This guy in Labbydoor -- was there any snow involved?

Out here every public building has a spiral stairway enclosed in a tower high enough that the staircase could be used in a snowfall at least 3,810 cms. higher than the building. This was started after the Great Snowfall of '08, when just before Christmas snow obeyed the Biblical injunction that "the valleys be filled" and dropped so much white stuff that it was flat from Chink Peak (2,065.02 meters) to the top of Kinport Peak (2,172.00 meters). Of course, that was a snowfall that only hits every 25 years or so.

Wish I could find the pic of my buddy in Churchill Falls, Labrador standing beside a street light about 15' tall. The top of it was below his knees. Poor planning, I would say.

Well, it's officially winter fer this little black duck. When the powder crunches under foot and my thermo meter reads -15C and the WC is another 10C colder, I figger there ain't much hope of denying it. Oh, I scuffed off a skiff from Mum's driveaway and spread some ice melter t'other day but that ain't snow. That's forecast for Sunday. Only 30cm over Su/Monday but still too much fer Arthur n me.

Got it better n rags and Ed, tho. Ya see Ed'snow pic on the Canada Post thread? THAT is snow!

Just a reminder that in 500 posts we have dedicated one to Katlaughing. Time to research her posts - has she posted in this thread before? Perhaps there is a theme to follow (though with several thousands of posts between it might be difficult to remember said theme).

No worries, Eb. He weens like that at times. We all do. Pay little or no attention, tho I feel your attrition. As the gentleman he is, I am sure he will make amends for his tirade, veiled as it was in niceties. Obviously, he was making light... as am I.

Ebbie took my number. 49494 was mine, I had dibs on it. But Ebbie is a nice person (unlike some I could mention) and I won't make a fuss over it.

Congratulations, Ebbie!

When we say that 'this too shall pass', it may be comforting to the one in distress but the brutal truth is that the good times also pass. And thus shall it ever be.

Just sayin'.

Da Bears don't wash none. Dare stink makes dare opponents woozy, ya know, and den da Bears got a walk-over. Course it helps if dey play a buncha pansies, like da Pats. Ited work fer da Cubs too if Wrigley Field was indoors like where dem pansy-ass teams play instead of outdoors like where real baseball is played.

A while back gnu asked about my kitchen. I baked a lot over the days we were icebound (since the power stayed on!) Cranberry nut bread, zucchini bread, bread bread, and yesterday I baked an acorn squash (cut in half, remove seeds, put a smear of olive oil on the foil in the shallow pan, place the two halves open side down). Bake for about 1 hours at 400o. Mmmmmmm!

As fer the dogs, one of them was just a bit too doggie-smelling and yesterday I finally put him in the tub and gave him a thorough scrub down. He's so much sweeter to be around now.

Who is not to argue disorder is valid or invalid? Morally or practically? I have given this much thought and I can conclusive conclude that I think I'll crack a cold one and check out Monday Night Football on channel 20... I think it's 20... ABC?. If I dont get back, I was right.

We don't use salt on the roads and sidewalks and things out here. We use ground-up nuclear waste. Not only does it improve the traction but it also melt the ice AND provides street lighting all year long. Surely mutant children are a small price to pay for road safety!

There shall be no examination of traction of surfaces to be traversed by testing a level surface prior to proceeding in order to assess safety requirements with regard to equipment, materials and procedures.

You shall instead lay down a covering of suitable material, such as road salt, before proceeding upon said surfaces, especially if'n yer sorry ass is sittin' on a snowmobile...

Oh, and Rap, I think you'll find the word is fokker, as in "this fokker was a Messerschmitt".

A reasonable facsimile of humanity is definitely at work in Mister R's long and colorful history.

Say, does it bother you, anyone, that the circumference of the whole planet at the middle is only about 25,000 miles? Hell, you could walk that in less time than it takes to qualify for Social Security...

Right... standing orders here are that all personnel shall determine the traction of surfaces to be traversed by testing a level surface prior to proceeding in order to assess safety requirements with regard to equipment, materials and procedures.

Or, give er a scuff ta see if she's icy eh?

Comment : Be da sweet Lard Dyin Jaysus, lass! Ye gots ta take care, eh?! We don't need ta hear ye ended up inna hop wit yer ass broke! Who herein would grace us wit a voice a reason, eh? Maybe Pete, I spose. But, what if he doesn't follow standing orders? No backups then, right?

It looks like a lovely light snow on the ground, but when you test it with your foot, there is no stepping into snow, there is the banana peel effect of treading on a hard slick surface. Going down the driveway slope to retrieve my New York Times had the potential excitement of a Disney E-ride.

Another nice day expected here. Sunny, -6C with 20-30kph wind (-13WC). Positively balmy, actually. The plows were out once removing slush when it was not required. I expect they were field testing quip and practicing for what will inevitably happen. I have a feeling we will are in for a relatively mild winter with fair amount of snow but it's hard to make any true predictions without consulting Moter Nature... damn I miss the woods. My heart aches for the woods. Just trees and wild animals. I hate being cooped up in the city with all these people, half of whom are less intelligent and less polite than the rest of us. Thank goodness I have such nice cyberfriends.

It's 16F outside my house right now, out of the wind. It's still snowing. We're supposed to get 4 inches or more. Not much, by itself, but on top the what we already have on the ground, well, I'll have to tunnel out to the street tunnel the city makes where the roads are.

SRS... no valve on the hose bib? Round here, we got em. Most folks got frost proof hose bibs but we all got a valve on em at minimum.

Was 9 and rainy here yesterday. Positively balmy! 0 today with mostly sunshine. Alas, first quarter moon is on Monday so we will now, in my estimation, begin the long dark night huddled together listening to CBC Radio so we will know when we can wear short pants again. Not that I would, of course. Short pants are for children and those who think they "look good" in em. I have nice legs, as I have been told, but I do not see the need to assist skeeters in procreation for the sake of vanity.

We're supposed to get down to 10F tonight. A little chilly for the likes of most folks in North Texas. The faucets outside are covered and I need to leave some water dripping in the kitchen sink so pipes don't freeze in the wall. Damn but it's cold, even the dogs aren't happy about it.
