So how's everyone feeling this weekend? Injuries, anyone? Are all surgical wounds healing properly? No bedsores?

Mom, Kendall lost his mind and decided on short notice to come visit North Carolina in August. Just got back from a lovely afternoon and evening with him and Dani. (Everyone should have a best friend who is a chef, by the way.)

Am cat-sitting for 3 weeks. Said cat tried to attack the neighbor's cat through the screen door. You will be pleased to know the screen is fully repaired now.

mom, I am back from LACMA, where I gorged on Klees, Rodins, Bauhaus, Japanese netsuke, Calder, Moore and the endless fascination of La Brea tarpits neRvy. I am so full my soul is spinning.

So you were having a little whine with that brie?

It's hot out, as it should be, this time of year in Texas. The garden is looking good, all things considered. Maybe the boys want to take a black light out at night and see if there are any pests that glow; that's a good way to keep the garden free of destructive caterpillars, and it keeps the kids out of trouble.

Thank you, MOM, from the bottom of my heart for the lesson well learned in childhood that whining does indeed, pay. The local supermarket, while still not convinced of the difference between brie and camembert, started stocking camembert this week, just to shut me up.

Thank you MOM, Jesus, Kneesus and knitting.

New report... they sold "over 70k" tickets... but they estimate the crowd at over 100k as a lot of private land overlooks the concert site.

A buddy of mine made nearly $15k selling camping space, lawn chair rentals to see the concert, booze, water, hot dogs, ice and whatever on his property above the site. I asked about the booze and cops??? He said, "We are trapped in our homes during these concerts and the pOlice are busy with many other things... we deserve the compensation.

He was very kind. Charged the same price for a beer as they did at the concert. Lucky bugger!

Thanks Rapaire, who snores and sneezes
Whines and rants, decries and sleazes
Knits up shoulders, if not kneeses
ANd posts a poem about little Jesus.

I am sitting in a hotel room in Missoula waiting for housekeeping to "do" the room so I can take a nap. My shoulder is healing; next week I will begin the first full week (of many) of physical therapy sessions. I am already doing some exercises.

Just for Amos I will now post my favoritest poem in the whole world:

I am Jesus' little lamb
He has made me what I am
He will wash me white as snow
What a dirty job for little Jesus.

Is Rapaire knitting a shoulder? Can he knit a knees also?

Cher Amos,

Those are complete poems by William Butler Yeats, selected so that I wouldn't take too much space, bore you with such well-know pieces as "April 1916", or outlast your attention span. The last was done from memory, with my own subtle change.

Of course, I could have use something like Rimbaud's

Comme d'un cercueil vert en fer blanc, une tête
De femme à cheveux bruns fortement pommadés
D'une vieille baignoire émerge, lente et bête,
Avec des déficits assez mal ravaudés;

Puis le col gras et gris, les larges omoplates
Qui saillent; le dos court qui rentre et qui ressort;
Puis les rondeurs des reins semblent prendre l'essor;
La graisse sous la peau paraît en feuilles plates:

L'échine est un peu rouge, et le tout sent un goût
Horrible étrangement; on remarque surtout
Des singularités qu'il faut voir à la loupe?

Les reins portent deux mots gravés: CLARA VENUS;
?Et tout ce corps remue et tend sa large croupe
Belle hideusement d'un ulcère à l'anus.

but I really much prefer fewer graphic details in my poetry -- and less misogyny.

Perhaps people are mistaking simplicity for simple? I read Frost to my kids, I read a lot of others to my kids. But Frost is just wonderful and was always a favorite. You could feel like you were visiting new places in New England when you read his work.

My daughter was in 8th grade when there was an extra-curricular activity called "Whiz Kids" that was like Jeopardy except they just asked questions and you answered. There were some UIL (University Interscholastic League) competitions between schools. One week near the end they did a fun one, kids against teachers. The question addressed to both panels was along the lines of "what poet wrote about a horse standing in the woods thinking about why they're there." Moonglow waited for one of the teachers to pipe up but they were silent, so at the last moment she rang the bell and answered "Frost." The teacher who was running the quiz didn't say "you're right, X points for this team," she stopped and looked at Moonglow and said "You knew that? You knew it was Robert Frost?" Like cultural literacy is rare in a 13-year-old.

All this tangential bloviation does not one whit lesson the charm of the barbed interchange between Frost and Wallace; more importantly it does not less the subtlety of their reciprocal charges in respect to the writing of poetry.

I do admire Rapaires talent at excerpting, but aside from being related to poets and poetry, the continuity seems minimal.

Mom likes that kind of thing,though. She has brought us all up to be helter-skelter tangentialists.

There is no such word as kerfustian, little Hawk. You may be confusing fustian, a fabric also known as bombast, with bombast, an oral style to which you naturally gravitate; the two are very different, please note.

And to be painty-waisted has no meaning I can divine, unless it be water-colored at the midriff, which makes no sense.

Now, a tort feaser might, I imagine, be a medieval maker of cakes, but I see no calumny in it, except perhaps that of being inordinately aged.

You called?

I actually prefer Carl Sandburg to Robert Frost, although both are good. Used to be I also enjoyed TS Eliot, but now I'm not so sure he's as good as I once thought. Oh, he has his moments, sure. But I dunno.

Now, Yeats had a mind for image, story, and meter:

            The host is riding from Knocknarea
            And over the grave of Clooth-na-Bare;
            Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
            And Niamh calling Away, come away:
            Empty your heart of its mortal dream.
            The winds awaken, the leaves whirl round,
            Our cheeks are pale, our hair is unbound,
            Our breasts are heaving, our eyes are agleam,
            Our arms are waving, our lips are apart;
            And if any gaze on our rushing band,
            We come between him and the deed of his hand,
            We come between him and the hope of his heart.
            The host is rushing 'twixt night and day,
            And where is there hope or deed as fair?
            Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
            And Niamh calling Away, come away.

or

I think it better that in times like these
A poet's mouth be silent, for in truth
We have no gift to set a statesman right;
He has had enough of meddling who can please
A young girl in the indolence of her youth,
Or an old man upon a winter's night.

This is not to say that one IS better than another, but simply expresses my preferences now. But Frost is still good, as in

...Two roads diverged into a wood, and I,
I plowed straight ahead through the bush
And that has made all the difference.

"Frost's is a poetic world large and difficult enough to get lost in," he writes. He finds in Frost's poems an expression at once appealingly plain (sometimes deceptively so) and canny. By contrast, the poems of Wallace Stevens (championed by Ms. Vendler) are frequently "elusive to the point of incomprehension, their gorgeous structures of sound not put to the service of illuminating 'subjects'?human beings."

This quarrel mirrors one taking place in the classroom in recent decades, where Stevens has been largely on the rise as an academic fashion and Frost on the decline. It also recalls a famous exchange between the two poets, recounted by Frost's biographer Lawrence Thompson:

"The trouble with you, Robert, is that you write about?subjects."

"The trouble with you, Wallace, is that you write about?bric-a-brac."

(From a book review about poetry)

This is a similar adventure in biochemistry. Ya gotta ride the waves of despond knowing there is sunlight just down the road a piece.

Well... I am boxed in for a few hours. My house is in the "cradle" of the "Y" of the two main arterials leading from Moncton to the Magnetic Hill concert site in the north end. At least 60,000 are expected at the concert which begins in about 90 minutes. They will undoutedly sell a bunch more tickets today.

Sirens have been ongoing. The RCMP chopper is overhead routinely. But, amazingly, the weather has cooperated wonderfully. It's been over 30C, humid and little wind for quite a while, with searing UV indexes and nasty thunderstorms thrown in to wake you up if you can sleep. Now... 28C, sunny, RH 56%, a bit of a breeze.

I did not think ACDC could draw over 60k peeps. I think the opening acts are far better. Perhaps it's the combo.

I just take solace knowing that Sir Paul's concert in Halifax drew far less. And, more importantly, that ACDC won't be on the radio 60k times a day.

I'm not sure they eat them. I get the impression they just want to suck out the DNA. I'm not sure what happens if someone's DNA is sucked out -- perhaps they turn into some kind of living dead. At the very least they couldn't pass on their genetic material!

Yes, it did happen. She used a one shot from a Colt Woodsman .22 pistol, defending her child (if my memory serves). The bear was about 9 feet top to bottom.

This was not then and is not now a recommended cartridge for hunting any bear, much less one of those big Alaskan brownies. Should you try it I suggest that you leave word with your next of kin and have your life insurance not only paid up, but checked to be certain that the "suicide clause" won't leave your beneficiaries penniless. Collecting your parts for the funeral could be difficult, however....

I also heard a story about a woman who killed an attacking grizzly at short range with a .22. The bullet went through the bear's eye and into its brain. That's about the only way you possibly could kill a large bear with a .22, I'd figure, and I sure wouldn't want to try it.

If it did happen, she was just very, very lucky. And the bear was very unlucky.
