Naw, Rap ain't dead. He just staggered out o' the Mudcat Tavern where he was alternatin' identites between Puss'n Boots and the Highway Man.

Showed hisself so bad the landlord's black-eyed daughter slammed the shutter in his face so fast and hard that big gaudy plume he had in his hat got caught in it, and broke right in two, it did.   Not even his horse wanted to be associated with him after that. Ol' Rap stormed out of there on foot, his face blood red with rage and shame. He shoulda headed fer home then, but instead he headed up to the Legion Hovel where they was smokin' some of that salmon. He said he didn't inhale, but that is the only sensible explanation fer him tryin' to wax wise and mystic now.

Oh Lordy. Mom? MOMMMMM! Come quick, Shane's a'headed up to the Legion Hall to join his buddies. We gotta get Rap out of there now!

Holy flip.

It looks like the guy that kilt Rapaire and took over his computer idenity is the same guy that taught Kung Fu on that old show.

Holy flip.

This is heavy, man.

Do not ask for what you do not want, Grasshopper. Look for the answer within yourself and find there whether or not there is a better way. But to find it you must first discover a worse way, and in finding the worse way you will find the better one. Search within before you ask of others, for only then will you understand the answer when you find it.

A man wished to travel a Great Distance in a short time, and so he asked others to arrange his travel for him and for this he would pay the arrangers gold. And his travel was arranged and it did not cost him much, but as he was flying over the Great Ocean he realized that his seat was so close to the one in front of his he had not placed his feet upon the floor of the carriage since he had left. And he was greatly discomfited. After his business in the far land was completed, he arranged for his own travel and made a compromise between the elegance and useless frippery of First Class and the discomfort of Coach and traveled Business Class. And his compromise made him comfortable, and cost him more gold than Coach but less than First Class.

Learn from this lesson, Grasshopper.

Anyway, you are no better than Rapaire when it comes to answering the question.

Well, I contend that I didn't, but I'll answer your questions EVEN THOUGH it is contextually meaningless:

Yes, perhaps such might exist if conditions were such that the "way" you seek is an actual improvement upon the "way" you have. Otherwise, perhaps not.

IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH, grasshopper?

I notice that you, again, have adroitly ducked away from answering my question.

Sigh.

IS THERE A BETTER WAY???

My question "Why should there be a better way?" should philosophically and logically come before your "Is there a better way?" And THAT should be followed by the question "Is the new way actually better or is it simply something new?" Of course, all of these questions must follow the question "Is there a way?"

Actually, Rapaire, you did not ask me first.   You took a perfectly reasonable question and instead of answering it, you altered it and pretended to be answering it. But an altered question is not an answer. So ou are, too, a floofle-head.

My local NPR station is pretty good. Today they're rebroadcasting a program with guest John Kao called "How America Is Losing Its Innovation Edge, Why It Matters, and How We Can Get It Back."

Good program for the last day of the year. I sat in my lazy midday bath listening to this program and thinking about what I want my children to be able to do in their lifetimes.

There SHOULD be a better way, and I want my kids to be curious enough to work on that better way. I want them to be able to feed themselves, to be able to fix things, to be able to think critically about their world and all of the stuff in it. And to be able to dismiss a lot of the American Nonsense that has built up in my lifetime. (If you remember the old Space Angel program, retro rockets were used to help you adjust your course.)

Okay. Back to the regular BS. This little dose of high-octane BS is meant to act as a retro rocket into the new year.

The question is better asked, I think, in this manner:

Why Should There Be A Better Way?

Why can't it be BOTH ways?

Easier and Better?

But the question(s) can still be asked; together or seperately.

MM:

What does an easier way have to do with a better way?? Really. Just think if Khandu had decided he would look for an easier way -- there would be no MOAB at all!!

No, no.   Rapaire is right that Mom is the OTHER way but my question, aimed deep into the dark, obscure hearts of MOABites everywhere, still stands.

Is there a better way???

MOAB is the other way. MOAB is 90 degrees to everything else.

And Mom likes it that way, because that is the way it was all intended to be.

(Welcome, Slag. You don't have to read the last 10K or so posts, just all of it.)

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ are we there yet? Uh, Oh? We are there! Wow! This is the first time I dared ever to view this thread! I have dial-up at home and I couldn't tie my machine up for a week downloading all this. AWESOME! Don't know if I'll ever be back this way. I may get satellite DSL soon so who knows? I would love to share in some of the previous discussion about the California coastline, which I love but I AM just a little overwhelmed.

One thing I would like to say is that with all this stacking ability I think everyone who posts here could help out a dear friend of us all, Little Hawk. Come on, throw him a bone. Post to his measly 5000 "...if only..." thread. Hook him up with Winona while he can still remember why he WANTS to hook up with Winona. You got the power. Do it!

MOAB(S) for sure.

The question I want to pose to my friends and colleagues on MOAB is this:

Is there a better way?

Instinctively, of course, we all feel sure there is and we are busy figgering it out one tiny bit at a time.

I hope we are not mistaken, though...

On my desk are two 10" slide rules, both Accu-Math 500s. On the case of one is written (by me) various formulae and equations, such as

(a+b)^n=a^n + na^n-1b/1 + n(n-1)a^n-2b^2/1*2*3...+...b^n

and

how to determine the sin, cos, tan, csc, sec, and ctn of a right triangle.

I wasn't allowed my slide rule case when I took tests and quizzes in physics and maths, but I was allowed my slide rule.

It's been 44 years since I used them to any great extent, but their batteries are still good!

Right. The run from I-5 on across to Paso Robles/Atascadero is weird in the dark -- but those are hills, not dunes. Morro Bay is breathtaking.

I yearn for a dirigible.

I drove in the dark from I-5 to Atascadero--interesting in the moonlight one summer night, and I think I passed huge sand dunes. It was different from Atascadero out to the ocean, but pretty. Morro Bay, that's up there, right? I have some great photos of the kids playing in the water.

I dunno, Amos. There is a Power in numbers, a Power to foretell things. Like take the number 042 and the number 1945. Together they become the Julian date of my birthday, the single most important day in the entire history of the Universe: the 42nd day of the 1,945th year of the current era.

This was predicted, of course, by prophets and other folks who predict things. Like my mother and her obstetrician. Isaiah. Jeremiah. Nostredamus. Moses. The Buddha. Job. Joanna Southcott. Nimrod Hughes. Jemima Wilkinson. Frederick Barbarossa. Getafix. The Delphic Oracle. And lots and lots and lots of others all around the world.

Each and every one of them would mutter "The Forty-second of the one thousand, nine hundred, and forty-fifth. HE will come then."

And I did.

Hey, Mom!! I just drove all the way down to San Diego from Paso Robles, the most beautiful drive down the coast. The land along the California coast can be breathtaking, especially north of Santa Barbara, Anyway., we had a really nice visit with Mudlark up Paso way and are now safely home, showered and rested and thinking about semantics.

Glad to be home despite these really weird numbers Rapaire is mumbling on about.

Hey, them Legionairres and Legionettes grow their own salmon. That is, "salmon" is what they call it because they grow it in obscure places along the Salmon River. It's some kind of plant that was originally used by, I think, cannibals because it's real name is something like "cannibals satisfied." Anyway, they harvest it, dry it, run it through a blender, and enjoy smoked salmon. They say it's good for glaucoma and I guess a lot of them have glaucoma. I think it smells like burning Coca-Cola.

One thing at a time! I finished taking down all of the holiday lights and ornaments (I didn't put up as many this year, and didn't do a tree. It was too much work on top of a new roof and a paint job.) Tomorrow I'll take a bunch of donation stuff over to the Goodwill (I suspect they have a glut of donations this year, so I shall go early). And once payday happens, THEN I'll go see about the salmon. They're not cheap (I will buy a whole frozen fish, defrost and fillet it, then brine it, let it cure, then smoke it. It takes a couple of days at the very least). No papers required for smoking this fine fish! Monsieur Le Zig Zag is NOT welcome!

Well, I have spent another day doing absolutely nothing of consequence - turning into a pattern. Perhaps if I smoked some of that salmon it might fire my imagination if nothing else? Maybe I'll ask MOM if she and I might spend New Year's Eve at the Legion Hall.

In the meantime, this Spanish Red will have to do.

Knowing those Legionaires as you do, brother Rap, would you recommend we carry small silver daggers in our garters?

Well, darn. Trying to order alder chips online. The ACE hardware folks gouge on their shipping charges. I compared prices and though I had two screens open the damned thing changed even though I sent through the form with the correct number. Arrggggh. How can I smoke my salmon (soon) without good alder chips? I cancelled (I hope) the order and will place it again later. It costs me 80 cents more for shipping to buy three bags of chips as it does to buy one bag of chips. MOM would be steamed about this if she'd placed the order. Just as well she didn't--she's hard on monitors when she's pissed off.

Rapaire is already thinking of anatomically correct snowMEN positioned over holes, with anatomically correct snowWOMEN placing the flag in...well, nevermind.

Oh, oh! I just thought of something!

I'll freeze some yellow colored water in a narrow arc, walk over to the third green (approaching it from a different direction than directly from my house!) and place the frozen arc appropriately over the hole. I think I'll take some unfrozen yellow water with me and sprinkle it around a bit. Footprints to the arc, footprints away from it...boy, was it cold out!
